What a contrast between Peter and the Disciple John. We don't hear about John causing Jesus any where near the problems that Peter caused. Praise God that Jesus is so patient with us. John was by far the disciple who was the closest to Jesus. He was there at the cross, along with Mary Magnalene and the mother of Jesus. Not very many went all the way with Jesus. There were the 5000 that Jesus preached to and feed. There were the 70 disciples, and then there were only 11. Out of those eleven one went home, one followed from a distance and denyed Him, but only John stayed close and was with Him all the way to the end.

Only Mary Magnalene stayed with Him after He died, and she was the first to see Him, after He had risen from the dead. It must have been a surprise to her, because I do not think anyone thought that He would be raisen. Even then, He appeared onto 500 people, but there were only 120 of them at Pentacost.

John 21:20 Then, Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following: which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?

JohnR7,
The Gospel of John does not say who the "disciple that Jesus loved" was - he isn't named at all. Might have been John, might have been some guy called Fred from Spain. We simply don't know.

Yeah, but John isn't actually mentioned by name in the book of John at all - the others all are. It's pretty obvious who is meant.

Every reference to the one that Jesus loved seems to point to John.

Could be Matthew.
After all, Matthew isn't mentioned by John, is he? We don't know it was John, we are only going on what Irenaeus said. Its just an unnamed disciple - some people don't even think he existed, that he's only in there as the "model" disciple for the Johannine community to emulate.
