Every morning I drive to and from work, I hear these commercials asking me to donate money to "Save a Child" somewhere far far away...

Example:
"Your contribution to xxxxxxxxxx will support all the work we do to help children in need, such as providing prenatal care and newborn training, supplying life-saving immunizations for young children, and building schools and training teachers so that even more children have a chance for a better future."

What are you feelings on these organizations. Are they inspired by God to benifit His children or are they lining someones pocket? If its a worth cause I'd be more that happy to donate the money, but Id liek to knowyour thoughts first.

On a secondary though, if I do donate to them would the money be considered part of my tithing?

I've seen these on TV, and the state of poverty that these children are in is truly painful to see. I believe that there are several organizations out there who are being completely honest with the money we send in, but if there are those who aren't, may God have mercy on them.

To gain from the proceeds which went towards feeding a child who can't care for itself is one of the worst things I can possibly imagine.

Matthew 25:34-45 "Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.' "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.' "They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' "He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

Do it (please).

You'll probably save lives.

I hear World Vision is good.

(also, I understand that they ARE accountable)

WorldVision has a good reputation and I would send it to them instead of just anybody.

As for tithing, according to the Bible it is meant for the local church. Now, I give to my church and I know they use some of it for local charities, along with the deacons fund (deacons exist to serve the poor) and the missions fund. Donating to someone like WorldVision would be an additional offering, IMO.

We sponsor a child through Compassion International. It's $32 a month. It's equal to one entire year of his dad's salary. It's sorta cool. I get letters from him every couple of months, I send him letters and stickers and small things that will fit in an envelope like paper ships and stuff. They provide medical checkups and teaching. YMMV

That's one thing that we need to be concerned about helping the homeless. Some spend their money poorly. And on the other hand, some really do need our help. We must use proper discernment.
