'LAMENT FOR DAMASCUS' by Christine Darg
The Bible guarantees that Israel will survive (Jeremiah 31: 35-37) but the capital of Syria specifically will not:
“The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.” (Isaiah 17: 1)
If World War III has begun, as some analysts say, is this the time that “the burden, or oracle, of Damascus,” Isaiah Chapter 17, will be fulfilled?
The Hebrew word for “burden” means prophecy, oracle or doom. So Isaiah 17’s title could also be translated—“The doom of Damascus.”
Israel’s leaders are demonstrating more backbone than the Arab neighbors had counted on. Syria has stockpiled weapons to the heavens, and Damascus’ destruction therefore could soon be a reality. Even Saudi Arabia is sending signals to Syria that Damascus will be in trouble if the Syrians don't back down and control the terrorists at this time.
Nevertheless, at some point in the future, the capital of Syria will cease to be a city. Touted as the oldest city in the world, Damascus will be reduced to a ruinous heap, according to the sure word of the Lord. The authenticity of the Word of God and Bible prophecy will take on a new meaning when this happens.
Damascus has never been destroyed in the past, so this prophecy is yet to be fulfilled. “Ruinous heap” sounds like the result of a nuclear blast. In other words, it is likely that Damascus will resemble rubble like Hiroshima after the atomic bomb was dropped.
Does Syria deserve this? Syria has been an intractable foe of Israel. Syria was the repository of Saddam’s missiles and is even now bullying Lebanon into harboring Hizb-allah terrorists who are bludgeoning Israel. Damascus permits numerous terrorist groups to maintain their headquarters in Damascus and Syria-controlled territory in Lebanon, Furthermore, Damascus is said to host at least 10 radical Palestinian factions. To put it simply: Syria is out of favor with the God of Israel.
Damascus is special to believers because it was on the road to Damascus that Paul received the Lord Jesus and it was in Damascus that he was baptized on the Street called Straight. Paul, the former persecutor, escaped over a Damascus wall in a basket from his persecutors.
Damascus Gate in Jerusalem, which is the beginning of the Road to Damascus, will still be standing after the dust settles, but the gates of Damascus will fall.
My husband and I also visited Damascus a number of years ago to prophesy that Damascus must repent.
In fact, I’ll never forget the eerie and ominous feeling of visiting a city under divine judgment. We stood on a hill overlooking Damacus and prophetically proclaimed Isaiah 17, but we also believed God to send his holy angels to warn and rescue any righteous ones, just as Lot was delivered by angels out of Sodom just in time. I wonder if Christians remember those visits and have heeded or will heed the warnings.
Even now I say to the Church in Damascus: remember Lot's wife and come out of her and do not partake of her sins. Anything of value to the Church in Damascus, remove it now.
Jesus warned concerning the Last Days that the people of God must learn how to flee from trouble. We pray any believers in Damascus will flee before the destruction. Jesus told His disciples that a time would come for those in Israel to flee and He instructed them to pray in advance that war would not be on a prohibitive sabbath day or in the weather conditions of wintertime (flash flooding) and furthermore, He said --don’t even go back to collect any possession.
The Syrians and the Iranians have threatened continually to use chemical, biological or nuclear attacks against Israel. Provocations by Syria against Israel could demand a nuclear attack by the Israelis on Damascus. Many Bible scholars believe the fulfillment of Isaiah 17: 1 will occur before, near or after the Rapture of the Church. Escalating events in the Middle East now make such a scenario of combat between Syria and Israel a real possibility.
The London-based Arabic language newspaper Al-Hayat reported this week that Israel has set a deadline for Damascus to halt Hezb’Allah’s activity along the Lebanon-Israel border and bring about the release the two kidnapped IDF soldiers. . . or Israel would launch an offensive with “disastrous consequences."
If Jesus should come for His own today or tonight, are you ready? If you are not sure, make sure NOW. Pray: Father in heaven I do believe in my heart that you raised Jesus from the dead and I dare to confess with my mouth that Jesus is Lord. Come, Holy Spirit, and seal this decision in my heart.
Also please pray: that any true believer or true God fearer will be angelically delivered in time from out of Damascus!
Lament for Damascus:
Damascus, I cry for you. You have not learned the lessons of the visitations of the Lord. You have loved terror more than truth. Leaders of the church in Damascus, come out of her and do not partake of her sins and of her judgments.
