Hi guys. I am feeling moved to be baptised, yet I do not belong to a church. At this point I also do not claim a denomination.

However, I work for a Lutheran church and really like the pastor, I'd love it if she'd do it. But, some people have told me that before you can be baptised in a Lutheran church you have to take classes and be a member of that church, etc. Is this true? I wanted to be sure before I embarrass myself by asking her.

Baptism and teaching were meant to go together. Jesus told the disciples how, as they were going, to make disciples, by baptizing and teaching.

Taking a class to learn is not a bad thing, but a God-pleasing thing. If you have faith in Christ and there is no emergency, then it would be best for you to take the class. You might just discover that you want to be a member of that church afterall.

Talk with the pastor and speak of your desire for baptism. :)

My church has baptized non members on rare occasions but I agree that becoming an member would be best. The whole idea of being a member is that you gain an active support group "And" you are encouraged to attend services regularly so that you get a good diet of God's Word and learn about growing in your faith.

LCMS stance of baptism:

For adults, we first teach them--usually in an adult catechesis or instruction class--and then baptize them at the conclusion of their instruction. Either way "baptizing" and "teaching" always go together, since they're the two ingredients in making disciples.

My twin grandaughters were not memebers and were baptised because I sponsored them but that is for children.

I have never baptized a "member". I have only baptized sinners. :)

In Christ's love,

ask the pastor you work with. your pastor will tell you how to best handle the situation.since baptism is a thing that involves the whole congregations, your pastor may want you to go through classes and membership first. however, if the pastor feels that you are already "part of the congregation"or just feels that baptising your is also the right thing to do right away. it may happen. regardless, our speculation won't amount to much as ultimately it will be up to him. just go ahead and ask :D
