So, I'm wondering, why is it that so many former rockers and hippies are now Orthodox Christians?

Fr. Seraphim gave a good answer to this I think. It dealt with man trying to make his own paradise without God and having failed then turns back to God.

I will try to find it later. Gotta run now...

hmm, an interesting idea, eoe. I heard it somewhere else as mixed up kids trying to fill a God-shaped hole.

Here is my theory...

EO is VERYexperiential. Those of us who used to get our jollys from "experiences" (I need not go into this, those who know, know) were well used to living a highly experiential life. When the bankruptcy of sex, drugs and rock and roll becomes evident, we seek to fill the God shaped hole with GOD! Yet, we still desire to maintain the experiential life that we have grown so accustomed to living. EO hits the nail on the head! The smells, the bells, the vestments, the liturgy, the experiential prayers, the asceticism.....it is right up our alley ("our" meaning those of us who come from the hippie lifestyle).

For this same reason, I believe that you will also find a goodly number of former hippies and rockers in Protestant Pentecostal type churches.....the music is still rockin' and the preachin is lively and with the tongues and "holy rollin" it is a very experiential.

My 2 cents. Actually, I have given this a ton of thought and am glad that you asked the question Kami!

I believe that the above comes from Orthodoxy and the Religion of the Future. I will look at that tonight and see if I can find the reference. Good call eoe.

Because we didn't have to cut our hair or shave our beards- we just traded our tie-dye for black robes. :)

hmm, interesting. I never spent much time in Protesant churches (1 year in a church of Christ), but the one time I felt comfortable in one was when I was visiting my in-laws and the closest church to their house was a Calvary Chapel. It was just as you described it. I think if there had been one near me, I may have ended up there.

Well unfortunately, I do not have a rocker card since I prefer the Carpenters, unless I can squeeze in on Abba's and Billy Joel's coattails.

But I have found that many of the converts I have met, including my husband, come from Pentecostal, Episcopal, or rocker/biker backgrounds that do seem to have experiential and bearded things in common.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it, especially the young lady and  parts.

I generally think to myself when I hear the rock music we've had so much fun tossing about on here, "Now that's REAL music...."

Much in the same way, when I'm attending DL, I can't help but think to myself, "Now, this is REAL worship."

Now you're digging deeper. That makes a lot of sense. Fearlessly seeking being real. Yes, rock music gets down to the soul of the matter, and so does the Orthodox Church!

There are alot of former rockers and hippies that are Orthodox? I had no idea. I know of one famous "rocker" that has left Orthodoxy for Islam but thats about it.

Can you give me an example or two of rockers or hippies that have embraced Orthodoxy? My congregation is still ethnic so i dont know about this, the only unusual personality that occasionally attends is that magician Criss Angel but he was born into the faith and his brother was my sunday school teacher years ago.

.

I'm not talking about famous ones, just average people I've run into on-line and IRL.
What always made me a little uncomfortable about the one Protestant church I used to go to was that no one ever admitted to having a wild life before becoming Christians and no one ever admitted to listening to secular music. It was as if they either denied that part of their lives or were trying to appear more holy.
