I see some really cool sigs and they aren't linked to anywhere, but look like made from a software program or something. Is there such a thing?

There are some members here who will make special siggys for other members.
You can also find different images/icons and save them to your computer and then upload it for your siggy too. Most of the members do that. :)

There were a couple of members who also made special signature images for blessings that use to post in the Blessings Exchange forum which seems to turn mostly into another gaming forum. You might want to make a thread there and ask if anyone is interested in helping you make one. You might think about what you would like in your siggy...colors, designs, wording etc....

This may sound dumb, but once you upload them as an attachment, how do you get them on your signature?

Go to your User CP. On the left side is the Control Panel. Under Settings & Options, click the link "Edit Signature".
Add the text and/or images you want to show in your signature in the empty field. Once you click "save signature" your signature will appear in all your posts you make after you saved your signature.
Note: Adding or changing your signature will use up 50 blessings.

Well then, when you upload attachments, does it save them for later or do you have to use it then?

Ive uploaded attachments to use but when I go back I can't see them?

I use photobucket...you can get an account there easily...it's for free..and uploading pics is easy too...and if you don't move the pictures within the account it works pretty fine

To answer your original question...
Paint is installed on every computer (at least all PCs I know of), but I wouldn't recommend it for making signatures.
Paint Shop Pro is a commonly used program, but it isn't used as much as Photoshop (but Photoshop's expensive!)
I use Paint Shop Pro/

If you're not afraid of your computer & can figure things out for yourself with a little help, Download GIMP--it's a free & is easily downloaded even on dial-up. You will need to download the runtime environment first, then GIMP. You can also download the animation package. http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

For those of you who like glitter, here's a good post to do glitter text using GIMP
http://interactive.mugglenet.com/temps/viewtopic.php?t=4461&start=15
It's about a third of the way down the page & is titled Glittering with GIMP. I think there is a post on this same page about how to make your own glitter even.
There are lots of tutorials on GIMP, all you have to do is search. You can add other fonts & brushes to GIMP, too. To read about GIMP http://www.gimp.org/
