Hi ttreg
As you said yes it is a denomination which originally started out as a mission organisation. That is why it still has a very practical focus which imo is a good thing. If you look in the sticky section there is one called "Online Resources SA and other" In their you can find the doctrines of the Salvos (there are only 11 of them). Like most other churches we believe that salvation is by grace alone but we fall in the camp we aren't in the OSAS group. We believe salvation relies on a continued state of obedience to God. Like many denominations you can get big differences from one church to another. Generally the churches are called corps in keeping with the army theme same as the ministers are called Captains and there are other ranks as well. Of course if your someone like me then you'll never ever call someone by their rank which could upset some but when I went to a lutheran church except for when I was young I always called the pastor by his first name.

Hi ttreg. If you go to http://www.redshield.org/ and put in your zip code, it'll tell you where your nearest Salvation Army is.
