Sabbath day of rest as a prefigurement of Christ's day in the Grave.

Do you have a good way of explaining this to others who do not understand it?

Perhaps you know of a homily on the subject?

How about other OT prefigurements?

Forgive me....

I've heard it said: "God rested from His creative labor on the seventh day. Christ God rested from His re-creative labor in the grave on the seventh day."

Don't know if that helps at all when explaining it to non-Orthodox.

He rose on the third day but, only on the sabbath did he remain in the tomb for the full 24 hours

I dont know, it's in the liturgical texts around Holy Week/Saturday, though...For OT prefigurements, you can do no better than Lenten weekday service texts. I think it basically covers them all.

Have you checked the Epistle of St. Barnabus? He discusses the concept of Sunday as the eighth day, but I cannot remember whether he mentions the Saturday Sabbath as foreshadowing Christ's rest.

It really struck me that God, being Spirit, could not tire and had no need for rest. Rest is something which pertains to the flesh so it immediately became apparent that the seventh day rest was referring to the incarnation. I'm afraid I haven't any patristic sources to direct you towards.

Doxastikon of Holy & Great Saturday:

'Mystically this present day,
Moses the great,
prefigured, saying;
"And God blessed the seventh day."
For this is the blessed Sabbath,
this is the day of rest,
on which rested from all His works,
the only-begotten Son of God;
suffering death in accordance with the plan of salvation,
He kept the Sabbath in the flesh;
and returning once again to what He was through His Resurrection,
He has granted us eternal life,
for He alone is good and loves mankind'

...the seventh day rest (Sabbath) of God in Genesis, was a Protyposis of the day He spent in the tomb: He kept the Sabbath in the flesh

Simply awesome. The hymns of The Church are simply awesome.
