question about buddy list

I may be missing something, does it serve a purpose other than letting someone know that you consider them a buddy?  Two people have me on their list and I didn't know it until today when for some odd reason  I was inclined to look.  Just curious, I think it's a cool function.

I find the buddy list really helpful if I want to send a message to more then 1 person at once...if they're on my buddy list I just check who I want to send a message to and everyone gets it.

Or if you happen to have a buddy who's name you can't quite always remember how to spell. ;) hehe
