View Full Version : Amish women's clothing changes

In Middlefield, Ohio, Amish women of all ages are now wearing shorter skirts, some of which barely cover their knees.

What's up with this? Why are Amish women wearing skirts about the same length as regular women, instead of the ankle-length skirts they have worn for hundreds of years?

Is this happening in other Amish communities, too?

You know the world is messed up when the Amish start gettin' risque.

Selling the buggies, buying minivans.

A number of Amish families I see in Trumbull/ Geauga counties have bought minivans and put for sale signs on the buggies in the front yard. Lots of them have cell phones, now, too. Nicer cell phones than the one I have.

When I was in the mennonite church it was noted by those that count these things that the old order churches were that fastest growing anabaptist churches. This included the amish & conservative mennonites. Now maybe amongst the the amish there has been something of a reformation movement that has them putting away the "traditions of men" sort of thing? Heard anything in that direction?

Nope, not really. I haven't talked to my contact with the old order lately, so I'm a little out of touch with what's going on there. I was invited to conservative meeting in Middlefield, so maybe I'll go, if I can find the right dress to wear. It gets a little tiresome for me when I go to a conservative/dunkard/beachy meeting and the preacher puts his sermon aside so he can preach on 1 Corinthians to me because I'm not wearing a cape dress and cap.

The women who are wearing shorter skirts aren't wearing stockings either, and it's just weird for me to actually see the skin on their legs. I think I was about 8 before I realized they aren't born with black opaque stockings on their legs. ^_^ Such are the memories of someone who grew up with Amish neighbors, I guess!

Cape dresses & caps are cool - dress up, spare the preacher a bunny trail (they preach too long anyhow) and post a picture-you can be our token CF amish girl.

I'll have to stop by the thrift store in Kidron and see if I can find one in my size.

Should I go long or short? I hate to be out of style, but I don't want to be called a slave to fashion, either! :D

wow- what an interesting thread! :) Don't be betrayed by the name- I'm not Amish, genetically anyway. I am a conservative plain mennonite, attending a Beachy church occassionally. So I guess, depending on your definition... the amish are posting on CF now. :)

Oooo where are you from? From a very young age I have wanted to join a church like that, and the more I grow in my faith with God the more I want to (i didn't grow up in a Christian home). UNfortunately I have yet to find one close to where I live... :(
