View Full Version : Does prayer work?

Why do we pray? The bible says we should not worry about what we will wear or what we will eat, all we need is the bible. If we can just pray to god for all our needs why do we take medicine when we are sick? Doesn't it say that if we ask god for something we will get it? Why do cancer patients need chemotherap, why does anyone need any sort of medical assistance if all that can be taken care of by praying to god to make us better?

I mostly pray without words; I guess it is more like an internal silence sort of meditation.

I do not believe in frequent divine intervention. How would I know if something is from God? Why would God chose to answer some peoples prayers (say for an illness) and not others?
And where does the Bible say all we need is the Bible? As far as I know, no author of the NT knew that his book/letters would be included in the Bible as we know it today.
And it does somewhere say that when one asks for something he will recieve what he asked for, but obviously this is not literally true. In my opinion, that verse just tells about how powerful God is. God is so powerful that anything you ask for you will get.

ok so neither of you really answered the question. if asking and recieving is not to be taken literal than what is? if i ask to recover from a sickness will god do it or not? i know it also says do not put your lord to the test but, i dont see why we would need to create medicine to help us recover if we can simply pray to god for our recovery.

I see that people are having problems answering your question. If you're sick and you pray for healing, it is unlikely God will heal you miraculously (although He can if He wants to...) However, He may give you what you need to heal (ie. doctors, medicine). And if you choose not to take what God gives you... then that's your problem. It's not wise to just sit around and wait for a miracle. God helps those who do their best to help themselves.
Hope that was somewhat helpful.

no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call
the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Reminds me of the joke about the man stuck in a flood who prayed to God to be saved. As the water began to rise, a man in a 4x4 truck approached and told him to get in. "No, I'm waiting for God to save me" the man replied. The water reached the first floor of his home when a boat came, he said "no, I'm waiting for God to save me". The waters crept up to his roof, a helicopter came by and lowered a rope. "No, I'm waiting for God to save me."
The man died. When he was before God he aked "Why didn't you save me? I prayed!"
God replied "Well, I sent a truck, a boat and a helicopter"

I try to keep healing and other things I'd classify as miracles strictly in the realm of "if it's in God's plan and purpose". If it's not, and we can really move mountains with faith, than what does that say about all the seemingly unanswered prayer out there?
We didn't have enough faith? I don't think that's the answer.

Throughout the centuries God has used men to do His work. Everything we have comes from God, including resources and intelligence... So if God hadn't given it to us, we wouldn't have it.
So to say, we we reject medicine because we're waiting for God to heal us... that's already rejecting something God has given you. Personally I find the Christian Scientists questionable.

The question the OP asked is one that has been asked for centuries. God's ways are higher than ours; He can miraculously cure, or He can direct us to a physician, or He can choose not to heal.
There was once a great king, one who loved God and tried to follow His ways, yet in one instance he did not. He became diseased in his feet, the disease was exceedingly great, yet in this he sought not the Lord, but went to physicians...and he died. You can read about king Asa in 2 Chronicles chapters 14-16 (2 Chron 16 v 12 describes his bad feet).
The Lord hears and answers prayers that come from the heart, those prayed with the help of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8 verses 26-27) and Jude 20.
In the past 19+ years of my walk with the Lord, I have seen Him answer many prayers, including opening barren wombs, healing cancers, healing fevers, material needs...and Yes, He has often sent diseased ones to physicians for medicine to take...the key is seeking His will and wisdom (James 1 v 5).

firstly, yes, God knows our needs before we even ask for them, but if you are sick, and you know you need medicine, and the doctor can help you, are you going to sit and wait for the doctor to call you and give it to you? No! You go and you say I need that medicine. See, ye have not because ye ask not! Read James 4. God knows what we need, but how bad do we need it if we aren't willing to ask for it? When jesus said that GOd already knows your needs, he was telling them how to pray. He said "when thou prayest" not if thou prayest! he's assuming that as a christian we are going to be praying because thats what christians do. If God in the flesh had to pray for help constantly, and was always spending time in prayer and communion with His Father, how much more should we?
I believe that God will heal every person that sincerely asks for healing. I have seen numerous people that do not use medicine at all because they have faith in God. But, that presents the main problem. Have we faith? Jesus said that if you have faith that anything is possible. That is if we believe without a doubt. Like someone said earlier, I believe the problem is that nowadays there is a conception that "God is unlikely to heal someone miraculously" ? Why? Does God not care? Is God not powerful enough? No!! He wants us to rely on Him. Its that we don't have faith!! Read all through Acts. Miracle after miracle. That is the dispensation of Grace we live in. God doesn't change. We have changed. THe Bible says that without faith it is impossible to please God. God will never answer prayer unless we pray believing that God will answer our prayers. And another reason miracles don't seem to happen anymore is because all through the Bible we see promises of answer to prayer but no one looks at the condition before it! John 15:7 says (Jesus speaking) If ye abide in my and my words abide in you, ask what ye will and it will be done for you. The problem is that we aren't living Godly lives and abiding in Christ, living Holy lives, therefore God won't answer our prayers! If we are a) living holy lives and abiding in Christ, b) believing with faith as a child, c) and making our requests known before God, every, I mean, every prayer will be answered unless it is asked to fulfill our lusts. (again James 4.)
Why do we pray? Because we are to be in love with God. If you are in love with someone, aren't you going to talk to them and find out what they want? You won't have a good relationship if you aren't constantly communing with that person. We gain strength and guidance from prayer. That is how we ask God for the strength to live a holy life, we plead with Him to heal people, to save souls, and to bring revival in our day. When we commune with God, and we read the Word of God, He speaks to us through his word, and to our hearts in a still small voice. A prayerless is christian is a powerless christian, and really not a christian at all.
Jam 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
Jam 4:3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
Mar 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
Mar 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Mar 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Joh 15:5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
Joh 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
Joh 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Joh 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love.
Joh 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.
Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints
Phi 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
Mat 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Mat 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Mat 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Mat 6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

I pray because God listens, because communicating is a very helpful way to build up a healthy relationship with Him, and because He answers.
And yes God does answer through other people , opportunities and such that is why learning to share with Him is so vital for our relationship with Him. [I Kings 19:11-12]
God can heal through doctors, he can save through human hands and He can put His arms around us through other people.
And God promises to give us what we need, not what we want the two things are very different.

Right, I think that makes a lot of sense. The main reason we pray is to communicate and build a healthy relationship with God... not to ask for stuff. But yes, we should ask for stuff, and if it's in His will... He will give it to you.

See if this kinda answers the question. I've heard people say that if God had meant for us to fly he would have given us wings. I say to that, if he hadn't meant for us to fly, then he wouldn't have given us the technology to build airplanes.
I kinda feel like those medicines are a gift from God to aid in healing us of ills. When I or one of my family members is sick, quite often I pray that God helps our doctors in making a correct diagnosis and give us the correct medicine to help us.

can i attempt you answer you with a few questions? isn't it possible for God to heal through medicine? isn't it possible for God to use doctors to heal people? isn't it possible that God has allowed humans to find all of these cures and medical procedures and medications, for several reasons? one being to show us how complicated we really are, proving that a "Greater Being" had to of created us. another reason is because we are a fallen world, sickness happens, and as time goes on, the worse the sicknesses develops, therefore God can use the power of medical intervention to bring further glory to Him. science is an interesting thing, and often times just proves that there has to be a God in order for all of this to be in exsistance, and everything didn't just happen by chance.

Colossians 4:2
Be devoted to prayer, being watchful, and being thankful.
Everytime you pray you allow God to work and move on your situation. It doesn't say anywhere in the bible about unanswered prayer unless you are praying big long repetitive prayers to be heard and trying to impress people. God only cares that you pray from a pure, sincere, contrite heart. Pray from the heart and it will be heard and answered as he sees fit.

My mother is as firm a believer as I have ever seen. She is blind in one eye now because she insisted that God was going to heal her the way SHE WANTED IT DONE.
She insisted that God would do a miracle and heal her eye. She refused to see a doctor.
It was pointed out many times that God also created doctors and that she should not be telling God how to heal her.
God ALWAYS answers prayer. Sometimes it is YES, sometimes it is NO. Sometimes it is NOT RIGHT NOW.
Praying for healing is just like any other prayer. But, we have to remember that God has His own plans for our lives. Sometimes that means our prayers are not answered the way we want them to be.
Healing is especially troublesome from this aspect. People who are sick pray for healing. Friends and family of those people also pray for healing. The person dies. Assuming the deceased was a believer where do they go? What is their state after their body dies?
It is to be with Christ, in His perfect environment where there is unlimited love, peace, comfort and fellowship with Jesus and other deceased family members.
Does that not sound like a perfect healing? It isn't the way we might like it to be, if we are the ones staying behind, but it is right for the person who is now with Christ.
I can personally vouch for answered prayer, including some that were rather miraculous. The fact that our daughter, and only child, is alive today with two wonderful children is a testament to God's mercy, love and answering prayer.
Someday I may post the information related to that story. But for now, I suggest the above as an answer to the OP.

God does answer prayer as long as it is in accordance to His Word and His will. (See John 15: 7)
And I agree with the above poster, if we are in Christ that IS the ultimate healing. If we are in a hospital and our deceased loved one flatlines, from a worldly perspective IT'S OVER.... but John 11: 25, 26... or even the very basic John 3: 16 are more powerful truths than Death itself.

With all due respect, I disagree with what I see as your basic premise. That being that if our faith is strong enough God will heal us. Or that if our faith is strong enough we will be healed.
The problem I see is that while God promises to heal us, and to answer our prayers, there is nothing in the bible that says we have the right, or capability to tell God how He is to answer our prayers.
As I posted earlier, God always answers prayer. It is not always the way we want it. I recall a song from some years ago that went something like, "Sometimes I thank God for unanswered prayer".
We pray, God decides how He is going to answer that prayer, and when He will answer it.
God knows everything there is to know about everything. He knows the end from the beginning.
I doubt that any of us is capable of telling Him how to run His creation.
He does answer prayer!
My faith enables me to make my request of God by prayer, and then leave it in His hands as to how He is going to answer.

1 "Why do we pray?"
Prayer is connecting to God. To build a relationship, one needs to communicate, be it God or another human being. When we pray to God, evil is kept at bay.
2 "The bible says we should not worry about what we will wear or what we will eat, all we need is the bible."
The teachings of Christ are inter-connected, much like a domino. You have to string other teachings as well instead of taking one teaching and hanging on to it.
The point is as long as we practice what is taught by Christ, we really do not have to worry about tommorrow because God will meet our needs abundantly.
3 "If we can just pray to god for all our needs why do we take medicine when we are sick? Doesn't it say that if we ask god for something we will get it? Why do cancer patients need chemotherap, why does anyone need any sort of medical assistance if all that can be taken care of by praying to god to make us better?"
The bible states categorically that God is Judge and in this capacity, He dispense blessings or curses. Blessings or curses are revocable. Curses can be blotted out of our lives by repentance and living by the teachings set out in the bible. It is up to the individual to examine his ways and determine where he has gone wrong. Repent and gradually, life takes a definite, good turn. No repentance, no life, just death.
I hope this helps you to understand that when things go wrong, stop pointing our finger at God. Look at ourselves in the mirror and make a change. Only then, will blessings flow.
God bless.

Of course God can grow back an arm if He wants to! But He doesn't always want to do that. Some things we won't figure out until we get to the other side(heaven).
God is fully capable of performing miracles, but the real question is... does He still do them today? I believe He does, but only if there is good reason behind it... not just because somebody asked for it.

God answers every prayer it just may not be the answer you were looking for. I recently had a stillborn and I am sure that God heard every word I had to say to him He has a plan that I don't know about and made a promise that he would help me through any thing. Maybe he has things happen to one person so they can help so many more. It all comes down to if you have a true relationship you know where it is going to end. Read the poem footprints and read through the bible a few hundered times and let that guide you. Your question can only be aswered by one person and you'll just have to believe in him and wait until you meet him to get the whole answer.

God does answer every prayer it just may not be the answer that you want. I recently had a still born and I am sure that God heard every word I had to say to him. He has given us a short time on earth with all the pain and suffering and promises us an eternity in Heaven with him if only we believe. I know that I can't wait to see God and my son with no pain or suffering. Read the bible a few hundered times and just enjoy what you do have and the positive things around you and if you are a true believer you can ask him when you get there!
