View Full Version : Do we practice the worst sin?

The worst sin is to blaspheme the Holy Spirit, it destroys faith, and so cannot be rewarded with eternal life.
To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is not so much to call Holy Spirit a scandalous name, but it is to in some way deny the power of the Holy Spirit, and to propagandize that denial.
I submit that we, christians, deny the power of Holy Spirit when say we have no way to stop sinning, which is in effect saying that Holy Spirit is weak and is not powerful enough to overcome sin in and around us.
I submit we cannot both obey God and serve our weakness to sin. We must stop denying the power the spirit of Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, who dwells in us, to overcome sin. We must, must stop believing that it God in us cannot overcome sin in us.
We must daily focus our faith on Jesus Christ dwelling in us through Holy Spirit, and live expectantly that God can give us self-control (fruit of Holy Spirit), will cause us to stop sinning, and cause us to live abundantly in obedience to God.

Fair enough.
I was raised in a church that taught there was nothing acceptable other than perfection. That doesn't mean that any one of us was perfect, but it did keep us from making excuses when we messed up. :)

If what you say is true, then we are all damned anyway, seeing as how blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable.

I see your point, if we are doing the impardonable sin, we are doomed...i think it is true that if we find we may be denying the power of Holy Spirit, however, if, once we realize it, we repent, turn to God, and wholeheartedly stop denying Holy Spirit's power, stop doubting his strength to overpower weakness and brokeness, sin, we will not have committed it.
That is the example of Jesus chastising the Pharisee when they suggested that he Jesus (controlled by the Holy Spirit) was casting out demons by satanic power...he warned them, that they were real close to actually denying the power of Holy Spirit, ruining the reputation, causing unbelief, even causing hesitation in the minds of some believers to trust God's goodness.
So if Jesus Christ can warn us what is bad, like he did the Pharisees, even though we have unwittingly come close to despising the glory of Holy Spirit, we can repent, just as the Pharisee were warned and could repent of what they did.
So let's repent, turn away from denying that the Holy Spirit is powerful enough to overcome, overpower sin in us...lets live expectantly, hungering and thirsting for the righteousness that Christ's spirit can impart to us.

In context and simply put..Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is attributing the works of God to Satan. It is not calling the Holy Spirit a scandolous name or denying that we can stop sinning. The context is precisely the pharisees refering to Christ's miracles as works of Satan and not what is posted here. So no there are not any of us committing the unpardonable sin. Perfection is a formal heresy and if a church is teaching this doctrine it is time to bail and find a church that actually teaches scripture.

I believe we are imperfect and to purposly sin is very bad but i would not say it was a sin against the holy spirit. I would say denying the power of God was the sin against the holy spirit. I sin every day and yes, sometimes on purpose. This means that if you are right, Im doomed and should just stop trying, and i my view if i was weak enough to do that i am truely lost.

Well put and right on the money. I might add that if one is worried about having committed the unpardonable sin, then he/she has not done so. If they had, they would not feel any sense of guilt, or shame, whatever, that would lead them to consider/fear that they had committed that sin.

I believe I see a problem in the original post. God is omnipotent (He is all powerful) and can certainly overcome sin. The issue is not whether God can overcome sin, rather can we overcome sin.
We are all weak and commit sin every day. We aren't perfect, but Jesus is still working on us.
The real issue is whether we can, with the help of the Holy Ghost, overcome sin. That becomes a particular question when there are certain sins to which we have become addicted.
Abuse of our bodies, overeating, overindulgence of any kind, etc can easily become addictive. It is difficult to stop doing those things because of the addition.
That does not mean we are destined for hell, it means we need to work at breaking the addiction and asking for God's help in doing so.
It is important that we understand our salvation and the price Christ paid for it. We are forgiven ALL SINS, except the unpardonable sin, when we ask forgiveness. End of story. Our salvation and eternity with Christ does not depend on our being sinless in this life. That price has already been paid.
That does not mean, however, that we should intentionally continue to commit those acts that we know to be sinful.

Christ said that they could blaspheme against him (Matt 12:32), the Son of Man (who made it plain that he was God..see Matt 26:63-64). So if it is not an unpardonable sin to blaspheme God (Jesus) why is it unpardonable to blaspheme Holy Spirit? This is the key!
This is something to meditate on, it is a fantastic key to understanding what God wants.
The special evil of blaspheming the Holy Spirit is that If we are not careful, a person that deminishes the value Holy Spirit in their mind, will not then submit to the control of the Holy Spirit in their body, they will hesitate to submit to Holy Spirit because they believe it is an ungodly power, like a strange foreign power, and therefore lose out on sanctification, thus causing them to loose out on eternity, and just as bad influencing others by doing so. (Remember Romans 8 says that if you do not have the Holy Spirit living in you, you are not a Christian!)
I submit that when we say we can't stop sinning, suggesting somehow the Holy Spirit is not powerful enough to defeat sin in us, we are going down the road that does the same damage as the Phaisee were doing when they biased people by suggesting the power that did the miracles was evil.

Again the doctrine of perfectionism is a formal heresy. We cannot be perfect on earth.
1 John 1:8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.
Our sin is covered by the blood and we appear perfect unto God. We are never perfect on this earth. We can sin by simply thinking a lustful thought. Perfectionism is a dangerous and heretical doctrine.
If you do not mind my asking, what church do you attend?

You are saying that we might be committing blashpemy of the HS by saying we cannot stop sinning. I posted scripture that refutes this idea. The doctrine you are espousing is a doctrine of perfectionism. Do you deny that?

re: post 16... The 'doctrine' i am espousing is that God is faithful to his commandments, that since we are commanded to obey him, he has provided a way for us to succeed, the name of the way is "Jesus Christ".
Have faith in God's unlimited power, submit and enjoy the blessing of the Spirit of Obedience. God reigns in the 'fools' who trust him.

We accept that the Holy Spirit exists but we are saints who sin. To deny Him is to deny Him with your whole being and heart.

So, if you were face to face with Holy Father, you would perhaps confess something like this: "Lord, i truly believe that to free us from sin you sent your only Son Jesus to die for me, and i fully accept his gift of the Holy Spirit that provides me with eternal Life, but Lord i just cannot accept that your Holy Spirit can overcome my sins, somehow my broken passions are too powerful for Holy Spirit to quench....but i still get eternal life, right?"

This is a false dilemna as in the formal logical fallacy. We are told to confess our sins one to another in scripture which presupposes we have sins to confess. We are told that if we say we have no sin in us then the truth is not is us. We are to strive against sin but nowhere does that imply we are to be free of sin. It is a struggle then ends with the end of our life and not before.
I will, praise the Lord, stand before God sinless due to the blood of Christ and nothing more or less. I will sin and I will be forgiven for sinning. I will confess my sins to God and to my bretheren. I will never say there is no sin in me because the truth is in me and part of that truth, evidenced by scripture, is that sin is in me.
Read Paul when you get the chance. We are all guilty of breaking every single point of the law. All 613 points. But Praise God Christ's blood has washed us white as the driven snow. We will never be free of sin by His grace we will be blameless before the judgement seat!

Yet in the same chapter, I John, we are exhorted to stop sinning...hmm, must be an answer somewhere to our (all christians) conundrum.and there is, rely on the control of Holy Spirit (don't stay a sinner)...also, in the same chapter that you found that Paul admitted sinning a lot, Paul gave the answer to how one go about stopping sinning, see Romans 8 (and other places)
My point in this OP, is that if a Christian hangs on to his sinful state and operates only within the fleshly state that is imperfect and broken, he is bound to sin, however as it is explained so well in Romans 8 (and I John, if you read the whole thing), if a Christian learns to live by the Holy Spirit, lets the Holy Spirit really live in him like he when Jesus Christ was a man (and God, willfully emptied of his former God power).
See, i am afraid, we as Christians have purpetuated a culture where we think if we just acknowledge that we are still in the flesh, and the flesh is weak, we can satisfy a God who wants to fill us to the hilt and overflowing with a sinless overcoming Spirit the same Spirit Jesus Christ operated with when he overcame the sin of the world as a human.

we struggle, but not so much if we learn to believe, trust, and submit to Holy Spirit living in us...
Christ said it is primarily a matter of belief to reap the rewards of Life in him. If we do not believe the scriptures, that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of overcoming, that Holy Spirit can give us self-control, we won't then submit to the spirit of Jesus Christ within us, nothing much will happen in terms of overcoming sin.
