Hi,

This is really a history question, but I thought this might be the best place to ask.

After King Solomon the land was divided into northern Kingdom of Israel worshipping in Bethel, and the southern Kingdom of Judea worshipping in the Temple in Jerusalem.

Then the Assyrians conquered the northen kingdom and presumably deprted a lot of people

By the time of Jesus it would seem that part of the old northern kingdom (Samaria) was still apostate (if that's the right word), but further north Gallilee was orthodox in that they worshipped in Jerusalem

When and how did this come about?

Wow, good question. I don't know, myself, but we've got some really good historians here and when Shabbat is over, they'll trickle back in and have a go at it!

As an initial guess, I would think it had to do with the various King Herods and their relationship to Rome rather than anything that the Jews did.
