View Full Version : To buy or not to buy?

I've been spouting off lately about how I want to buy a Springfield XD 9mm. Turns out I found myself a great deal:

Here we go: (These are all the '06 packages - two mags, mag holster,
belt holster, mag loader, cable, etc.)

1 - XD9 - 400 + 15 shipping each

All this for around $450 once I get set up with all the paperwork. I've done plenty of research and discovered that the gun is on average $469 without all the other stuff. So I am going to save a lot of money (close to $100) if I go ahead and get it.

I'd have to throw it on the ol' credit card which is no big deal as I have a job and will pay this off right quick. My biggest fret is spending anything over $50 for anything. Someone, quick, tell me to buy this! :P

Do you need the money for other things?

I always hate to put anything unessential on a credit card, because it is too tempting to buy other things I can't afford, too. Once I use my card, I find myself going around to other stores using it for small things thinking, it's okay to buy this thing on sale even though I don't really need it. It's so cheap today, I'll never find it this cheap again. Then the bill comes and I feel like heck when I have to actually pay for the stuff.

Guns generally only go up in price. If this is all new stuff it does sound like a good deal. I paid that for a new beretta 92fs several years ago.

I'd say go for it. Look at it as an investment-something you'll be able to pass on to your little envoy...

So...do you guys collect guns or something? I can see the usefulness of having a gun around, but judging from a purely utilitarian standpoint, I don't see why you'd need more than one.

That's like saying you only need one cd of music from a purely utilitarian standpoint...

I've long since closed my collection-own all I really want. Haven't fired any off for a few years but when the boys get older I will introduce them to the fine art of shooting.

It's a pricey "hobby" with the cost of ammo and the time required for cleaning. The amount of time spent actually pulling the trigger vs. cost & clean up time:doh:.

Young fellas like TLE wanna get into it then I encourage them a bit as long as they are doing it for the right reasons, which I know he is. Hang out at Stormfront (which I do on occaison-information reasons only)--that'll scare ya.

arunma, come over some time and I'll take ya shootin'. We've got a decent indoor range in town. I've got .22 subsonic (very quiet) up to big honkin' .44 mag blaster (with some 180 JHP loads a lot of flash blasts out the barrel-pretty cool). Um, no rifles or shotguns here, though I was looking at a side-by-side 12 ga coach gun the other day...and I wouldn't mind having a .44 mag lever gun...no, I'm not buying anymore guns, but....

Ah, now I understand. It's a hobby. Sounds fun, though I think I'll hold of on buying guns of my own until I have a larger paycheck.

I'm not a big fan of credit cards, personally... In fact, we don't have any (aside from our bank credit/debit card that pulls money directly out of our checking or savings account). BUT... I am a huge fan of guns and that sounds like a great deal. So if you are disciplined with your credit card spending, I'd say go for it! :)

Is this a time-sensitive purchase or is it a good deal that will be around for a while? If it's not time sensitive you could always save up the money and buy it in a month or so. *shrugs*

I miss my guns... I need to save some money and buy a few. I am currently completely unarmed... :)

I've found that when using credit cards, one can avoid virtually all of the complications by simply paying his bills in full, and on time. If you pay your bill on time, then you simply pay back what you've spent, without incurring any interest, and the credit card company doesn't make any money off of you. So I make certain to never spend money that I don't have, and not to treat my credit card as a means of getting small loans. Essentially I use it as a check card.

"Why not simply use a check card?" you might ask. Actually I do use one most of the time, but there are a few places here and there that will only take credit cards, so it's always handy to have one.

(Just some words of wisdom to any college freshmen who may be reading this thread.)

There are definitely benefits to using credit cards, when you keep the bill paid off month to month... Free gifts, frequent flier miles, etc... You just have to be disciplined in your spending and not get over extended... That's where most of us get in trouble. :)

Eh, I just don't get excited over rifles and shotguns. Plus I have no where to shoot a gun like that.

Sigs are awesome weapons too! Its the one handgun i've got the most experience with as that's what they made us get certified in when I volunteered with the police dept. back home. I don't think you can go wrong with either one and eventually when I get enough cash I am going to buy a sig.

considering what i've had to pay just for mags and leather i'd say it sounds like a pretty good deal.

I wouldnt mind being a gun collector.

Thus far my gun cabinent includes:
.22 lever action Rifle
.22 Browning Target Pistol
20ga Bolt Action Shotgun
12ga Shotgun

:preach: I would like it to have:

Springfield XD9
Glock 17
CZ 75
H&K MP5
AR15
Sig P226

I enjoy shooting a lot and wish I could do more of it.

Go with the bushmaster on the AR-they're much better than the colts and other brands. And get a flattop.

Since that clinton exec order ended ya can get the flash suppresors & collapsible stock (not recommended) and all the other goodies. When I bought my bushmaster it was "postban" so the suppressor & bayonet lug weren't on it-looked kinda naked.

Now about that MP5-when ya get that one I'll buy the ammo-you load the magazines. There was one at an indoor shooting range-you could rent it (I think they had an uzi and a mac too, but since the HK fires from a closed bolt it a lot more accurate) but was short on cash for the ammo (don't take long to shoot up a couple hundred rounds through that puppy!)

I shot an MP5 about 4 years ago. It was AMAZING!

sure, rub it in:P

I've fired m60 (junk) & M2 .50 cal and m16 but I guess I've never fired a submachine gun.

One book you ought to check out is called Unintended Consequences. Apart from a couple of unnecessary sex scenes, it's a book about the gun culture. Truly fascinating and educational. It's enormous book. It is by John Ross.

I usually just point my finger at things and cock m thumb forward when i feel the urge to shoot. My neighbor takes me once in awhile to go shooting at targets but I never got the "bug" to get one of my own.

What's up with all the 9 mm's? Aren't there any old-timers here who prefer the old tried-and-true .45 ACP?

Auto Ordnance offers a wonderful 1911-A1 for less than 400 bucks, and it's a shooter!

The old war horse served us well for decades, and is still the standard to meet IMHO.

Someone once told me a story that they've killed with .45's and they've killed with 9mm; but they were killed just the same. This person was supposedly a navy seal but I am sure he's right. :P

I qualified expert in the USMC with a worn out .45-they didn't have the berettas when I was in. I think they are great guns-I just shoot better with the 9s and the ammo is cheaper.

I am a huge fan of 9mm pistols, not so much 9mm caliber. While I'd love to have a Kimber .45 I'd rather have a Browning Hi-Power.

Be neat if Beretta would build a .45 on the 92 design with a single stack mag but I understand it would work.

I heard that Navy Seals have really
Expensive but very good weapons
Because they are well-trained like

No advice on the guns I'm afraid. I am a city/suurban girl and don't go for shooty things :D

But a serious word on credit cards...SAVE the $469 and pay cash, unless you can pay the credit card bill in full when it comes in. Credit card debt ends up costing a lot more than $19 in the long run. Yeah, "I'll pay it off quick" but there is always something else comes up before you pay it off. Carrying a balance is a first step down a very slippery slope.

Take it from someone sadder but wiser :sigh:
