View Full Version : Question about church membership

Hi there.
Here's something I've always wondered.
As a Catholic, I consider myself a member of one church with multiple buildings. I'm required to attend weekly, but it doesn't matter where, as long as it's in communion with Rome.
So something that I've always wondered about non-denominational Christians was this. Do you basically belong only to one congregation? For example, if the service times one weekend don't work for you, do you go to another church with another pastor or not go at all? Also, if you're out of town, do you try to find a church with similar beliefs or just not go.
I don't ask with any intentions of debate; I'm just curious.
Thanks and God bless!

HI!
I am a member of a non-denominational church. This gives me voting rights within my church. We vote on the budget annually. My membership is only for the one church.
If I am out of town I am free to go to any church I choose. If I am in town I can go to any church I wish to attend. I always go to my home church since I love it, but do not have to.
Personally, I do try to go to church when out of town. If I am visiting relatives, I usually go to their church. If on vacation, I might skip a week of service. (always take my Bible though)
Our church does not have any attendance requirements. People go because they want to attend, not out of obligation.

I'm in agreement with Grace, as long as it's a Bible believing church, I'm free to go anywhere. My Pastor and his wife are on vacation in Florida, and I know for a fact they will go to church tomorrow, to a non-denom down there.

What does Bible talk about membership?
I feel there is nothing wrong to have membership in local church.

I also belong to a non-denominational church (as such). I go there several times a week and by no means do I feel obliged to go. I go because its a place where I can learn, and dedicate my time to God. When on Vacation I admit that I don't often attend church, but I still pray regularly and read my Bible. If out of town I will usually visit a church.

I'm a member of a non-denom church. I get to vote on matters before the congregation about once a year or so. During our membership class, they did talk about presence before God in worship. However, they didn't stress that we needed to attend our own church every week. In the summer, I tend to visit some other churches in the area, but usually attend my home church about 3 Sundays a month. During Advent/Lent and other Holy times, I"ll usually make an extra effort to go to my home church.

I am a member of the Body of Christ through His life in me. I meet with a local church in the Lord's Recovery. There are no formal membership requirements. Any member of the Body of Christ is welcome to meet with us. There are no weekly meeting requirements. I do attend as many church meetings as possible - usually Sunday morning, and a home group meeting during the week and a prayer meeting, and sometimes others, because I enjoy fellowshipping with the other saints and being built up in Christ with them. If I am in another city that has a local church I enjoy visiting there and meeting with them. It is wonderful to be able to enjoy the Body of Christ wherever I am.

Pretty much the same here. Although I may not be a "member" of other churches, that doesnt mean I don't belong to the body of Christ that the members of other churches belong to.

I belong to Jesus, and go to buildings where other people who belong to Jesus go.

I attend a denomination, The Christian and Missionary Alliance, and while I would prefer to attend a church in this denomination, if one is not around, any evangelical church (including non-denominational) is fine with me.
I can even take communion in most other evangelical churches, whether denominational or not.

It really depends what you view Church as. Biblically, Church is not just some place you go on Sunday for a worship service. If worshipping on Sundays is all that concerns you... then I'd say you can go to any Christian Church.
However, it's nice to be part of a local Church. The universal Church is a great concept and that is what we'll see in heaven, but let's be realistic... as long as we're still here on earth, we still need a local body of believers to be a part of. It's what Christ would have wanted.

First of all...
The church is the ecclesia. The word comes from 'ek', which means 'out' and 'kalleo' which means 'call'. When you put them together you have the 'called out ones'. Called out of what? The world! It's like we're a nation or something! That is what the church is. Pray about it.
