View Full Version : Are you really a baptist?

I have little doubt that most people who post in this forum attend a baptist church of some kind.

However, I am trying to get some momentum behind the idea of an evangelical denominational forum and, in the course of doing so, have run across several people who post here but don't actually attend a baptist church.

Because non-baptists are supposed to restrict their posts to "fellowship" matters and not larger issues I would like to ask any non-baptists who post here because they have no where else to post to consider supporting the creation of a general evangelical forum.

The thread is here:

Well, I attend a Baptist church, but would categorize myself as evangelical as well. Do I get two forums now?

I also post in Semper Reformanda (since my church is Reformed Baptist). So that would actually put me at three.

I'm not a Baptist per se, but I grew up and was baptized in an Anabaptist church and I have also attended Baptist churches in the past (and really only left either kind of church due to moving), so I have strong ties to both denominations in the title of this forum. That's why I feel like a full participant in this forum (i.e. not restricted only to fellowship posts) and the people have been welcoming :)

Yes, I'm for the evangelical forum, but I would probably continue to post here as well.

Edited to clarify: this forum is for Baptists, Anabaptists, and Quakers--not only Baptists.

I'm Southern Baptist.

There are people who post in here who aren't Baptist per say, but we enjoy fellowshipping with them and talking with them about certain things within our denomination. The ones who post here on a regular basis are kind and respectful. Although we have to smack-down a few who get out of line...:P

I am Southern Baptist and not angry at anyone all at the same time, which I find rare amoung Southern baptist. (it's a joke, an old one)

I do have a question though. How would we keep the different evangelical denominations from debating such matters as eternal security, works/grace and so on?
In my opinion what makes us evangelicals together is minor compared to what keeps us in seperate denominations.
Does this make any sense?

It does make sense but I'm unsure how these debates would be any different than the ones we have here within B/A forum?

I thought the key to being evangelical was adhereing to Sola Fide?

I am a Baptist

Evangelicalism is more of an umbrella term than anything. However, there are quite a few denominational evangelicals who do not fit into any of our Congregational forums and that is why I was pursuing this idea.

I am beginning to question if it is necessary though as the thread in "Suggest New Forums" has received a very small response. Even after I raised the issue in this forum and the non-denominational forum there still is very little interest.

Guess I'll stick to Wesley's Parish. :)

When I got the memo, it said that the key to being evangelical was worshiping in a style other than liturgy. Of course that makes me a strange evangelical, since I like the liturgy so much that I sometimes sneak off to the Episcopal church on campus.

I can't help but feel like the smoker with the health-conscious family, who keeps on sneaking out back when no one is looking... ^_^

Do I have to answer this question?

If you don't know by now, you will soon.

To be picky, Anabaptists are allowed to debate doctrine here.

I am certainly not a baptist, but the church I go to is considered an Anabaptist variety, and I'm in many ways much closer theologically to Baptists than I am to many other groups.

I am a Reformed Baptist. I find the climate here in B/A to be warm, loving, caring, etc. . .so everyone who's posting, keep posting!

While I have served my whole career in a Baptist church, I am evangelical first and foremost -- so either forum fits me.

Me too.

I'm an "evangelist," a traveling preacher. :preach:

I post in the Baptist room because thats what I am.

I also post in the Semper Reformanda room because I was educated alone the lines of the Reformed faith.

I also post in the Fundamentalist room.

So I guess that would give me 4 areas to post. :D

God Bless

Till all are one.
