View Full Version : [open] What Is Sin?

John the Baptist preached that repentence was "turning to God from sin in order to be forgiven". (Luke 3:3)
Yeshua told the woman that was accused of adultry to " go, and don't sin any more" (John 8:11)
So what do you think sin is?
Is it a violation of Torah? And if so, what does it mean when someone knowingly and willfully violates Torah?
(Just a reminder - Anyone may share what they think sin is, but there is to be no debating from posters who are not Messianic. Don't want the mods to have to work overtime :) )

I can say that Sin is NOT
-the Will of God
-created by God
-in harmony with God's laws, kingdom, and lifestyle
-immortal (everlasting)

Sin=missed mark, Mark=Law/teaching
Greek
Sin
264. hamartano ham-ar-tan'-o perhaps from 1 (as a negative particle) and the base of 3313; properly, to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), i.e. (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin:--for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.
Mark
264. hamartano ham-ar-tan'-o perhaps from 1 (as a negative particle) and the base of 3313; properly, to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize), i.e. (figuratively) to err, especially (morally) to sin:--for your faults, offend, sin, trespass.
795. astocheo as-tokh-eh'-o from a compound of 1 (as a negative particle) and stoichos (an aim); to miss the mark, i.e. (figuratively) deviate from truth:--err, swerve
Law
458. anomia an-om-ee'-ah from 459; illegality, i.e. violation of law or (genitive case) wickedness:--iniquity, X transgress(-ion of) the law, unrighteousness.
459. anomos an'-om-os from 1 (as a negative particle) and 3551; lawless, i.e. (negatively) not subject to (the Jewish) law; (by implication, a Gentile), or (positively) wicked:--without law, lawless, transgressor, unlawful, wicked.

Okay, so sin is not doing good - and it is a violation of Torah...
So if someone says to you - "Is it a sin to eat pork?" (or any other uncleam animal) How do you respond?

Okay, so sin is not doing good - and it is a violation of Torah...
So if someone says to you - "Is it a sin to eat pork?" (or any other unclean animal) How do you respond?I say:"for me it is" - and when they ask why I explain (why it is for me) and if G-d convicts them there is that much more for which to rejoice! But is for G-d to convince them, if it comes from me it will be more likely taken as condemnation (or craziness ;))

I would say sin is anything that goes opposite to Hashem, so things that are opposite to His law, His attitude, His spirit, as in both things done, not done and also the way they are done or not done, also including attitudes and thoughts of the heart which are not seen outwardly. I think there comes a problem because of all the different beliefs, people want to say everything is ok... but matching up with scriptures is what should determine what sin is. It is not popular to tell someone that eating pork is sin. I think if they ask they know they are asking a bated question. Perhaps answering the question with more questions to make them think and answer for themselves, like. Ask them what is sin, when they answer, anything that goes against the scriptures... then give them the scriptures that speak about the particular topic, such as eating pork, and then tell them they must make the determination themselves according to the scriptures. You could tell them as for your part you consider it sin or not because of what ... scripture says. Often I think peoples minds are clouded because of what they are afraid the response will be, so they cannot think clearly to determine the truth from scripture or answer as they have determined from scripture. Yeshua said to be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Give them the tools and information to answer their own questions.

personally, i can't bear the stuff anymore. I see that once you know that it is not food and that father does not want us to eat it and you eat it anyway, then this is something that you and Adon-i are going to talk about. The only way i would put anything pork into my mouth is if it would save my life, but i know father will never let things get to that, at least not for me, i pray.

Yuck, it reminds me of a movie I saw once a long time ago where a boy was stranded and was going to eat some gross grubb thing, remember it to this day. Well, Hashem brought meat by ravins before, and I am sure it was not pork.

this is a very good approach here Flopsy Rabbit. I believeit is difficult for us to understand that the early believers [Gentiles] did not have the “new testament” when the writers would speak of scriptures the only scriptures the writher could be speaking of was in scrolls from the “old Testament”. And the only way a Gentile could hear scriptures was to go to some place where the Holy Scriptures would have been read. This in no way means that the new testament is not part of today’s scriptures, But we need to remember that at the time the writer was righting the word scriptures. He was speaking of Torah.

So if sin is lack of love and love is keeping G-ds commandments, then why do we tend to be so politically correct when someone asks us if something is a sin? It is as if we are afraid to say "yes, scripture is quite clear that it is a sin to eat pork, commit adultry, forget the 7th day Sabbath, etc..."
Wouldn't teaching them how to love G-d the way He commanded us to do, be showing them love?

Wouldn't teaching them how to love G-d the way He commanded us to do, be showing them love?it is loving to walk"halacha" in love and part of that love is to show them our good deeds, but in love not the way the pharasees did by making a burden to lay on them, they should be inspired to walk as Yeshua walked...:clap::clap:1 Corinthians 13:4 - 14:1 4 Love is patient, love is kind, and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away. 9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11 When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13 But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love. if we can point out sin with this kind of love then we are doing a mitzvah in deed:wave:

Here is a post I posted on another forum yesterday. I named the thread "Going from Hate to Love"
Hate is the furthest away one can be from YHVH. You can't say you LOVE YHVH if you hate your brother, let alone yourself.
Some days it is so hard. The day goes well until pride steps in the way. Then the self hatred kicks in. Many will say just let it go. Well... Just let it go... Pride isn't an easy thing to decipher. Pride comes in many forms. But one thing for sure is that it is of SELF. When one thinks they are intelligent or good or whatever. That is just one sin of a few others in my life.
One other comes by way of being a man that is alone and wanting. Again I hear inside what others would have to say to that. YHVH will provide. Give it time. To me it sounds like Blah Blah Blah. Because I can't see me with any woman that Loves YHVH. At least not one of those I would want to be married to.
Another is being idle, lazy. Yes I do do things like yard work, gardening, helping Adeline in many ways like driving her, going to pick up her medication, going to the store for her, helping her with chores around the house. That is another place where pride comes in. I do all this and then I ask to use the car while her grandson who Doesn't do hardly anything uses her car almost every day of the week and she reminds me every time I ask her if I could use the car that there are cars in the paper for a few hundred dollars, Blah Blah Blah... I cowtow to her needs and treats the one who has been helping her like nothing. I plan on buying another vehicle when I can afford it, but until then I am not like a Duck with water being pored on where the water just runs off.
Now onto something that has been on my mind to wrire about.
Confession. When a wound is not treated it becomes infected and worsens. That is like sin in life.
Like Jonah when he was running away from what YHVH told him to do, others suffered. Jonah was sinning.
When David counted the men 20 and above instead of Trusting in THE MOST HIGH, 70,000 paid for it. David Sinned.
Again when David even when he had wifes Looked with his eyes on another woman who was married then plotted evil and had her husband killed, he lost his first born from her. David Sinned.
When Eli stood by while his sons sinned he was replaced by one who wouldn't stand when someone else is sinning by Shemu'el. Eli sinned.
When Shimshon cast his pearl before swine he lost his life. Delilah a non-believer got Shimshon to tell her his secret of his power. Shimshon sinned.
When Shelomoh loved women more then YHVH he forgot who created him in his later years. Shelomoh sinned.
When Moshe STRUCK the ROCK instead of Speaking to it like YHVH told him to, Moshe wasn't allowed to enter the Promised Land. Moshe sinned.
When Caan killed his brother, he killed him because of Pride. Caan Sinned and was cast out of living with family.
When Adam listened to his wife Hawwah which she herself listened to the serpent in eating what Adam was told not to eat they lost eternal bliss. Adam and Hawwah sinned and were cast out of the Garden...
SIN SIN SIN...
We are surrounded by SIN. SIN is someone KILLING someone. SIN is HATING someone which is the same as KILLING them. SIN is commiting Adultry which is with a Married woman. SIN is looking at a married woman which is the same as if you commited Adultry. SIN is STEALING your neighbors tool or car or whatever. SIN is looking at your neighbors things and wanting them, that is the same as STEALING. EVIL is at the DOOR as was told to CAAN when he was PRIDEFUL against his brother ABLE. SIN is Disobeying your parents. SIN is dispising your parents in your heart, it would be the same as if you spoke back to them in person. SIN is not keeping Shabbat. SIN can be walking by someone in need of help, especially when it is on Shabbat.
And most of all SIN is the LACK of LOVE, which is HATE.
One might look at someone else and think, I am glad I'm not in their situation and you know what, that is SIN. What a small thing to be SIN. I have always thought SIN is SIN to YHVH. But all around me I see people saying one SIN is Greater then another SIN. To ME all things that are SIN Have NO LOVE. SO ALL SIN IS HATE no matter how small it may be thought of.
Every Single Day We Are TESTED. EVERY DAY! We go through temptations to SIN(Hate). SIN is Hating the FATHER, YHVH.
And יהושע said to him, " ‘You shall love יהוה your Elohim with all your heart, and with all your being, and with all your mind.’ "This is the first and great command. "And the second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ "On these two commands hang all the Torah and the Prophets."
(Mat 22:37-40 The Scriptures '98)
So if I don't love myself then I reckon I hate YHVH. And you know what, I don't love myself.
I sin and Hate myself for it. Maybe that is why this past year I have lost my voice. I have seen the sin in me and have been dealing with it on my own.
"Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be having been bound in heaven, and whatever you loosen on earth shall be having been loosened in heaven. "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning any matter that they ask, it shall be done for them by My Father in the heavens. "For where two or three are gathered together in My Name, there I am in their midst." Then Kĕpha came to Him and said, "Master, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times?" יהושע said to him, "I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.
(Mat 18:18-22 The Scriptures '98)
So now I see we all are part of a body and we must help each other out and lean on each other. WE MUST LIFT EACH OTHER UP IN PRAYER. Where two or more are gathered in Yeshua's Name there HE is. What ever WE ask for IT WILL BE DONE BY YHVH.
Now to have strength to deal with SIN one at times would need help from another. But some SIN isn't so easy to talk to someone else about. Because with talking comes judging when the other isn't really a Brother even though they say they are. Gossip can start from just sharing. Gossip is a SIN. So is this, Fearing MAN more then YHVH. So if I fear telling someone else my SIN to pray over then I am SINNING. Around and Around I go.
If any of the above isn't according to what those in MJ believe then disagree, warn and delete.
Shalom,
Tag

it is loving to walk"halacha" in love and part of that love is to show them our good deeds, but in love not the way the pharasees did by making a burden to lay on them...
Matthew 5
1 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying...
20 For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.
28 And so it was, when Jesus had ended these sayings, that the people were astonished at His teaching...
For many just the word Pharisee brings up the idea that if we look in the dictionary under hypocrite it would say, "see also Pharisee".
Consider this; Pharisees were the leaders of the day (who could we in our contempory day compare to? You fill in the blank with the most respected person you know). These were people who set the standard, they were pious, they were seeking, they were trying. Everything that was understood to do they did. Again try to picture the most respected leader you know.
NOW, consider again what Yeshua said. Does it look different? Just a thought....

1 john 3:4 I was saying something similar to my husband yesterday as we were returning from conference. For Shabbat we closed our booth, but there were others that did not, and some of them were actually Messianic Rabbis. ( It was interesting to note that of the two huge areas taken by these two Rabbis, one closed in honor of Shabbt and had signs everywhere around the tables saying so while the very next table over were a well known Rabbi and Rabitzen and they were open as usual. ;) )
So my husband was saying that he thought that they shouldn't be open on Shabbat. And I told him that he is only responsible for what he does and they are responsible to HaShem for what they do. He can say, 'I believe that I shouldn't be open on Shabbat', but not that someone else shouldn't be, because that becomes judging. It is between them and G-d and what the Ruach can use more to reach their hearts and convict them is not someone saying, "you shouldn't be open on Shabbat" but rather to see that they are surrounded by those who are walking it out and not open on Shabbat.
This year I was happy to see that there were at least 2/5ths that were closed if not half for Shabbat , and the short time I walked in there Shabbat afternoon after the tevillah there were very little shopping. :) This is a big difference from when I went 5 years ago and no one was closed and two years ago I and only maybe 2-3 others were closed on Shabbat. This year there were at least over a dozen ( including FFOZ :) )
