It must be nice to be able to copy and paste that, instead of typing ;)

I celebrate, though, with you. The Augsburg Confession was truly one of the best things to happen to the Faith. I pray that it's catholic acceptance is in the near future.

Ain't no way I could take the time to type that.

Imagine being Dr. Beyer and reading this aloud to the emperor that afternoon in June?!

I like a couple of responses to it (from http://bookofconcord.org/pdf/historicalintro.pdf; p. 19):

when Eck assured him that he would undertake to refute the Lutheran doctrine with the Fathers, but not with the Scriptures, the Duke responded,“Then the Lutherans, I understand, sit in the Scriptures and we of the Pope’s Church beside the Scriptures!

and

In private conversation, Bishop Stadion of Augsburg exclaimed, “What has been read to us is the truth, the pure truth, and we cannot deny it.” (St. L. 16, 882; Plitt, Apologie, 18.)

James, I hope all is well with you. It's busy here. I'm repainting my house, getting ready for new floors. And, in worship today, I played trumpet, read the sermon (Texas District LCMS convention going on this weekend, and most churches were pastorless, so elders had to fill in), and, I led the Bible study by going over some of the history of the Reformation.

Also today, 426 years ago, the Book of Concord (http://bookofconcord.org/) was published, which is also a great occasion!

I too, would love the Augsburg Confession's catholic subscription, but not without the rest of the Book of Concord.

Things are going well here too, except the 110 degree temps, we had to move out of our sanctuary today to the parish hall, made me feel like we were a missionary church renting a civic center. (Our church has no AC, but our parish hall does.) Unfortunately we got moved out on Confirmation sunday, so the confirmands didn't get the pleasure of being confirmed in our historic sanctuary.

As to the rest of the BoC, this is where my ELCA roots (in particular scandinavian lutheranism) show, I could get by with just the Augsburg Confession.

I just got through reading a disertation published by the "three trees press" on different approaches to the confessions, the issues where intriquing but the scholarship was wanton. It did help me though reflect on the confessional differences between the synods. I am glad to return and open up dialogue with you people again!

I like the rest the entire BoC because it removes much of the ambiguity that could result (must be my Germanic roots!); i.e., it helps clarify and define things properly, which is VERY important in dealing with theological matters (or most anything in life!).

Article IV is so very short (but well written) in the CA, but in the Apology, it is so clearly defined, and covers so many bases and ways the CA could be misinterpreted, I'd have to include it!

Yes, I applaud the ecumenical efforts of the Apology, and it is a good creed. I cherish it along with the catechisms written for reasons of teaching. However, the spirit of the Treatise, Smalcald, and Formula are upon establishing a seperate institution, and not on ecumenical dialogue.

I fear that the spirit of these latter pieces keep us from sharing catholic unity which was the goal of the AC.

Thanks theolgia crucis, great post!

What do you think... Maybe we should ask a Mod to split the conversation, then lock and sticky the Augsburg Confession?

Sounds good to me, everyone here loves the AC, it's a requirement ;).

Any one else have any thoughts??

Do you prefer the ecumenical driven creeds or the church establishing creeds?
