So, I know yia-yia is Greek, babushka is Russian, nona is Italian, does anyone know what it is in Arabic?
This afternoon, my nieghbor 2 doors down came over to ask about a package left at my house for her. I usually only speak to her a couple times a month and don't know her well. I know that she is Palestinian, but always assumed she was Muslim. Today, when she came over, she saw an icon in the hallway and smelled incense. She said "do Catholics use icons?" When I said that I had been going to St Mark's, she gave me a big hug and asked me how long and she told me that she went to an Arabic church. She asked me when I was getting chrismated and all kinds of questions. She just kept hugging me. She was so happy and before she left, she kissed me on both checks and told her to call if I ever needed anything.
How's that for a day brightener?:)

That's so wonderful. I don't know the Arabic word either, but yia-yia's are so wonderful, aren't they?

K-Kat,
That's really cool! I don't know the Arabic term either, there must be an Antiochian member here who does though!

the arabic is Sitto which is pronounced "Sit-Too."
...and in another dialect "Tita," which is the same as sitto, and is pronounced "Tie-Tuh"

...and while you've got me thinking about my grandmother, I remember when I'd say "Tita," she would always respond with "What, Tita?"

My aunt would do the same thing..."Auntie?"
"What, Auntie?"

I finally asked why they did that, and they explained to me that I was so much a part of them, that they would call me whatever I called them.

I just loved that answer.
