I'm in the beginning phase of starting a new ministry at our church for middle school kids. I would appreciate some suggestions, due to the fact that I've never done anything like this before, so I'm pretty much "clueless". Here's the scenario:
For 2 years I 've had this idea (originated from someone else) to take a group of kids, once or twice per month to begin with, to a local nursing home to minister and read to the precious elderly folks there. Over the past month, God has laid this on my heart in a BIG way, and won't leave me alone about it (gotta love 'im). The benefits are huge. One, the kids get to go into a "safe" environment to learn how to witness. This would be a great learning arena to start them on their Great Commission. Two, they'll continue growing in their compassion and understanding of our forgotten part of society, the senior citizens in the nursing homes. The compassion that they generate through this will take them through life, how they live and engage with others (I hope). Three, the elderly will get the much wanted attention and love from these young people. So many are left there to die, and it just breaks my heart.
My question is this; what type of reading would you suggest for the kids? Straight from the bible, or bible stories, what? I'm kind of stuck here. I need to figure this one out, and have an outline/proposal prepared before I go to the nursing home administration. Any suggestions would be appreciated! :D
Peace in Christ,
Terri
