Is it an update of the REB?

I like what I have seen of it.

But like most good Bibles, it is incomplete. I really wish most Translations were complete.

No, it's an update of the RSV. And I think it's wonderful. I was going to buy an NRSV, met this and thought it far better.

NO!!

the ESV is a Bible that attempts to stand in the King James tradition and is fundamentally a Protestant revision of the RSV. The result is a Bible that falls somewhere between the NIV and NASB in translation. It is popular among Missouri Lutherans and the only study version is the "Reformation Study Bible."

I've grown to like it. Because I am a KJV man anyway, this is just another useful modern language translation for me to use if I want, along with my NKJV.

I prefer the Hebrew canon as well, just so you guys know. So, to me at least, the translation is complete but they should put out the extra LXX books sometime later if possible. I can't help it- call it my early upbringing if you like. ;)

Also, I considered looking at a "Reformation Study Bible", until I realised that it had little to do with the Reformation outside of Geneva, so in fact, it more or less mis-represents itself by its title. So, for deeper study, I'll stick to the Greek and Hebrew for now.

Interesting.

Interesting.

Yep. It is completely and totally High Calvinist as far as I could tell. No correlation with the German, British or Scandinavian Reformations at all.

That is unfortunate

My children's curriculum, which is published by the Church Pastoral Aid Society, is based on the ESV. I only use it when we need to have the exact words (perhaps because of a puzzle or code), as we don't have class sets of it. It is quite different from the Children's NIV that we use.

I like the ESV. Sometimes the language is a bit cumbersome, but it challenges me to think a bit more.

Apparantly there is quite a good ESV childrens bible around somewhere.

I've never used it and the absence of the deutrocanon would prevent it from being a bible i could use consistently. I have heard good things about it from my evangelical friends and hopefully in the near future i'll get myself a copy.

So far I like the ESV. I'm hoping they add the Deuterocanon in the future.

Peace.

For the uninitiated among you, the above is an example of what is commonly known as "leet" (or if it were actually spelled in the leet alphabet it would be, "1337!!!!111!!!!1111!!!") Leet, (sometimes referred to as leet speek) is the preferred method of communication among internet dwelling members of the gamer community.

Leet began as simply a modified form of english using varient spellings of common words, as well as inventing varient forms of the words themselves. In very short order, however, leet began to develop its own, and entirely new alphabet.
It has now developed to the point at which it is almost entirely unintelligable to the uninitiated (Non leet speakers).

Transliterating the above example by Cola, into English yields the following phrase.

"ESV is teh roxors"

Which if it were in turn translated into english fully, would be rendered

"I think the ESV is a very good translation" or
"The ESV is an excellent translation"

That is all for the 1337 lesson of the day.. I must now go roxxor the ER because there are nooblets who are in need of pwning.
