View Full Version : Do the different Anglican/Episcopal groups argue?

Hi there!
I'm pretty new at being a Christian and am trying to figure out where I belong in the realm of Christianity. After hanging out on the OBOB board, it seems that there is a lot of disagreement among different Catholics (traditional and novus) about what's the right way to worship and do things. This kinda turns me off and is making me reconsider if I am truly called to the Catholic Church. Anyway, is it the same way for you all? Do you all agree as to how mass (do you call it that?) should be or who should be able to distribute communion? Do you all agree on women's roles in the church?
Thanks!
BTW, what's the difference between Anglican and Episcopal?

ROman Catholic groups argue, and are ultimately obedient to authority.
Anglican groups aregue, and ultimataely do what ever they want.
Episcopalians are the USA branch of Anglicanism.
Church of England is the English branch of Anglicanism.
etc...

I hate to say this, but all Christianity is going to have controversy.

Yes.
Due to the nature of a discussion board, people argue more on CF than out in the local church body. I suggest you go to the church you are interested in instead.

Do the different Anglican/Episcopal groups argue?Anglicans are capable of arguing about just about anything.

Generally, Anglicans believe that a bit of diversity in belief and practice (within reason) is not a bad thing. On the other hand, Roman Catholics believe that the Church should adopt positions and all the faithful should adhere to them definitively.
I can't speak for the RCs, but within the Anglican community there are tensions over how much disagreement should be acceptable. Much of this revolves around the issue of women's roles in the church. Most Anglican provinces now allow women to become priests and this is the source of much of the conflict. I think that forums like CF tend to display a distorted picture of the conflict, however. In practice, I have found actual, real, flesh-and-blood Roman Catholics and Anglicans to be far less inclined to bickering in real life than online.

I have said it many times and I'll say it again. The only thing that is truly historically anglican is diversity.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
(now we shall proceed to argue whether or not diversity is a blessing)

I hope this isn't deliberate dissent from Catholic teaching on faith and morals, but....
I miss the Episcopalian coffee. It's so much better than Roman Catholic coffee.

I think in real life, people just go to their own churches and don't really engage in debate with those who go to other churches, at least on a serious level. Yeah, you can get into heated debates over a few drinks, but it's all with good nature. As soon as people start to take it personally, it's time to stop. Fortunately, most people in England know the rules of pub debating.
I'm not sure what theological discussions go on at deanery and diocesan levels, but whenever a policy statement is put out by the bishop, it seems that a committee, meeting for at least a year, has been behind it.
Within our deanery, we get on reasonably well, with only the FiF church being more distant.
We do expect some fireworks in the coming year or two as the Parish Share system is under review in the CofE. That's about money - always something for someone to have an opinion about. The issue is that evangelical parishes, who tend to have the money, are becoming increasingly reluctant to support those broad church and AC parishes that are unable to support themselves.

We Use Bishops Blend. Fairly traded and the proceeds benefit Episcopal Relief and Development. ANd it tastes really good! Sounds like they need some at the convention :D

Wait... you guys have coffee? I haven't discovered it yet. Hahaha. (The Melkites sure do have a lot of wine, though.)
Ahh, back at Trinity Episcopal we used to have coffee and cheese every Sunday after the liturgy.
