The pet just won't take it and you'll be stuck with that item of food in your inventory until you find another pet of that species to feed it to.

when I did this I held onto it until I could feed someone else's pet. I hit the wrong food alot.

I didn't think of doing that! I should have, though! I bought some rabbit food I think it was. Next time I will just feed someone elses pet! Thanks for the idea!
