Lol. Mines definitley how great thou art just because it's beautiful, but if that's a non lutheran hymn I would have to say crown him with many crowns because its pretty :)

"Be still my soul" is one on my favorites from the music of Finlandia. Beautifull piece. I start off playing it softly on the organ and then build untill the rafters shake.
I'm pretty big on bombastic stuff.

Lol I'd like to see an organist hit all the keys as hard as he can and see if the whole church crumbles. That would be amazing to see.

This is not a subject I can answer because I just love hymns. There are few to none that I do not like. However, I'll list some:
How Great Thou Art
Crown Him With Many Crowns
Ah, Holy Jesus
Beautiful Savior
Earth and all Stars
For the Beauty of the Earth
How Firm a Foundation
What Wondrous Love Is This
Savior of the Nations Come
Lift High the Cross
Onward Christian Soldiers
I'll stop listing hymns now. . .

Out of the Depths
Ah, Holy Jesus (LOVE this one)
Christ Jesus Lay in Death's Strong Bands
All Creatures of Our God and King
Abide With Me
Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence
Creator of the Stars of Night
Veni Creator Spiritus
O Gladsome Light
Christians, to the Paschal Victim
Come You Faithful, Raise the Strain
I could go on...hey, I'm an organist :P

One sticks out in my mind
Cheif of sinners thou I be - Even to this day it convicts my heart to the point of tears every time I sing it.

Eat This Bread in the supplement 98 is one of my favorites. Why? Because of the scripture in each verse.

It is still my opinion that Lutherans have better music than Episcopals (I went to an Episcopal church this past Sunday to say goodbye to the youth minister). The tune that they had for "God of Grace and God of Glory" dragged on and on. . .

They finally got desperate and asked me to fill in at church sunday for the two lady organists that are going to the LWML convention. I asked one of the oraganists to bring in her synthesizer. That will sound better than the old, whezzy, flat electronic Baldwin organ. It was donated by a high contributor family some 30 years ago and it would be a travesty, at least according to them, to get something new. :)

I'm guessing a lot:scratch:

A lot?--- I don't think so! If it was mine I'd give it to ya. It's one of the worse electronic organs made. Believe me. I use to sell organs when those were brand new and they were pieces of juke even back then.

I think St. Paul used to have a Baldwin. It was getting pretty awful. We got a new one a few years ago. It survived Rita.

I got the synth set up next to the Baldwin and have to de-tune the syth to match the old wheezer. I'm not looking forward to playing this morning. The synth is too "synth" because it's cheap.
I tried to donate an older Hammond organ a few years ago and they said it would be allright but then I found out that it would be stored in the basement and not use in the sanctuary and decided against it.
It's about 3:30AM in the wee hours of the morning and I can't sleep, thanks to the meds they gave me for my heart problem. The dog was barking because the racoons come up on the porch looking for food in the cats dish. The dog hears the cat yowl and then all h-ll breaks loose. What a night. This happens like everynight. I ask the wife not to leave the cat food out and she forgets............sigh.
I guess if I just quit whining everthing will be allright :)

My fix for this problem. "Put the dog on the back porch, put the cat in the dog house and if the coon is stupid enough to show up again, well, you get the picture. :D
Our 2 dogs both died, but when we had them we had similar problems. Cats and all sorts of critters would be roaming around all night, and our one dog a husky would never stop barking. The lab would bark at coons but I don't she cared much about cats unless they were within reach. She would play dead until a critter would wander within her reach , and then it was all over. Now with the dogs gone I can sleep undisturbed, but I sure miss them. :(

Well I guess the gig is up. Now you all probably had a good laugh. I can't believe I didn't catch that. :doh:
I type with two fingers and sometimes one gets ahead of the other and I make a ton of errors but usually catch the really bad ones. I remember Chi Roe caught one that was worse than that about a year ago.
Its a wonder I didn't get reported Heh? ^_^

Don't worry Jim. My edits usually take longer that my original post :)
Well the service went allright. I've had problems with the regular order of service like page 5, matins etc. for years. I definitely like the word content but the music is so..........what.....staid? One of the ladies from the family reunion held after the church service said to me that she really misses the old order of service. She belongs to Concordia Kirkwood were Kieschnick goes with all there happy-clappy contemporary services. I don't believe that's the general concensus though. I think that even though people have had the contemporary services for a long time that they like them better. Just my opinion. With me it's still a toss up. As I said previously I definitely don't want the words of the liturgy taken away but I really don't like the liturgy music. There is a lot of contemp music that is biblical oriented and uplifting without being mushy and silly. I just wish we all could see the benefits of a quality combination between the two.

I have a friend who occasionally does some stand-up comedy (he used to be professional), in one of his routines, he does the song, "my dog is an awesome dog". Perhaps you know the contemporary "praise and worship" song it refers to? :D

From Eternity, O God
Hymn 411 of The Lutheran Hymnal (Red Hymnal), 1941.
Why? Just read the lyrics:
1. From eternity, O God,
In Thy Son Thou didst elect me;
Therefore, Father, on life's road
Graciously to heaven direct me;
Send to me Thy Holy Spirit
That His gifts I may inherit.
2. Though alive, I'm dead in sin,
Lost to all good things by nature.
Holy Ghost, change me within,
Make of me a new-born creature;
For the flesh works ruination
And can never gain salvation.
3. Drive away the gloomy night
Of my heart's perverse reflection;
Quench all thoughts that are not right,
Hold my reason in subjection;
Grant that I from Thee, with yearning,
Wisdom always may be learning.
4. Oh, create a heart in me
That in Thee, my God, believeth
And o'er the iniquity
Of my sins most truly grieveth.
When dark hours of woe betide me,
In the wounds of Jesus hide me.
5. As a branch upon a vine
In my blessed Lord implant me;
Ever of my Head divine
To remain a member grant me.
Oh, let Him, my Lord and Savior,
Be my Life and Love forever!
6. Faith and hope and charity
Graciously, O Father, give me;
Be my Guardian constantly
That the devil may not grieve me;
Grant me humbleness and gladness,
Peace and patience in my sadness.
7. Help me speak what's right and good
And keep silence on occasion;
Help me pray, Lord, as I should,
Help me bear my tribulation;
Help me die and let my spirit
Everlasting life inherit.

By Paul Speratus
Salvation unto us has come
By God’s free grace and favor;
Good works cannot avert our doom,
They help and save us never.
Faith looks to Jesus Christ alone,
Who did for all the world atone;
He is our one redeemer.
What God did in his Law demand
And none to him could render
Caused wrath and woe on every hand
For man, the vile offender.
Our flesh has not those pure desires
The spirit of the Law requires,
And lost is our condition.
It was a false, misleading dream
That God his Law had given
That sinners could themselves redeem
And by their works gain heaven.
The Law is but a mirror bright
To bring the inbred sin to light
That lurks within our nature.
Since Christ has full atonement made
And brought to us salvation,
Each Christian there-fore may be glad
And build on this foundation.
Your grace alone, dear Lord, I plead,
Your death is now my life indeed,
For you have paid my ransom.
Faith clings to Jesus’ cross alone
And rests in him unceasing;
And by its fruits true faith is known,
With love and hope increasing.
For faith alone can justify;
Works serve our neighbor and supply
The proof that faith is living.
All blessing, honor, thanks and praise
To Father, Son, and Spirit,
The God who saved us by his grace;
All glory to his merit.
O triune God in heaven above,
You have revealed your saving love;
Your blessed name we hallow.

Hey Jim, We have all sinned and fall short of God's glory. I think that you can be forgiven for this sin.
I just found it rather humorous that's all. I'm 44 (almost 45 and I wear no-line bifocals and someday I fear it will be trifocals.which reminds me of a Bill Cosby bit I heard once)
God be with you.

1. Holy Holy Holy! Lord God Almighty.
They sang this song in church when I was baptized at the age of 26. I also like it because I am a strict Trinitarian.
