The thing I enjoy most about this forum, is that I can sit hear and read erudite discussions between people much more theologically learned than I--all while enjoying a sumptious piece of Gooseberry Pie.

Some say next year in Jerusalem, I say "Next year I want to be in the area Invitational Pie-Makers Society."

(thought the forum could use some levity--and it is stinkin good Gooseberry Pie)

I've never had gooseberry pie. In fact I didn't know that gooseberries are an actual berry, I thought maybe it was a fruit made up by lewis carrol or something (I think lewis carrol's dad was an anglican minister so hopefully that will keep this thread within the bounds of STR legitimacy :-)

Yes, they are actually berries. I had never heard or seen of one, though, before I moved to Britain.

How about Gooseberry Fool? Anyone ever have that before? I hadn't heard of "Fools" before moving here, either!!! :D

I've never had Gooseberry, but I will say it can't be as good as Cherry or Strawberry and Rhubarb!

Tsk Tsk Tsk..... You AC anglicans can't even get your pies right.

May God have mercy on your poor pastry deprived souls!

(Just kidding don't burn me at the stake)

Oh, gooseberries are real fruit alright. When I was a child a neighbor in Montana grew them in her garden. Iirc they're rather tart just plain. (It's been a long time).

Lewis Carroll was the pen name btw of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson an Anglican clergyman, Mathematician, logician and photographer. His father was a priest and his great-grandfather was a bishop.

Pie in general is a Very Good Thing, imho. ;)

Gooseberries make wonderful pie, especially with heavy cream and custard.

Yummo!

Ebor is of course correct. Plain they are downright unbearable. But with a little bit of lemon juice and some sugar and wrapped in a flaky pastry shell and baked at 350 degrees--one gets simple perfection.

Pie is a wonderous thing. You know you could make a whole meal out of pie........

Ooh yeah.

Especially if you go the route of meat.

I love Pot Pies myself.

Oh, its not quite a pie, but my mom used to make a shepard's pie minus the meat.

I hated it when I was younger, I wonder if I would like it now?

My Gran used to make the most wonderful steak and kidney pudding. (not a sweet pudding, this is made with Suet)

What is Suet?

Torah613

suet is the lining of a pigs stomach IIRC.

I personally make a veganized version of Shephard's Pie with Seitan.

Suet is a bovine product - hard fat from the outside of the liver.

Gooseberries are fine without their skin. They make wonderful fool as well, as Karen already mentioned. Good pies and jams as well.

As far as Pies are concerned, I made a reasonable steak and mushroom pie earlier this week. Steak and mushroom is hard to beat when it comes to savoury pies...

Suet, as Naomi described, is a bovine fat product, which is used in a similar way to Lard.

The lining of the stomach is called Tripe, I think.

However there is such a thing as vegetarian suet. We use it in mince pies.
