Pat Robertson announced on TV that God told him there is going to be a weather disaster of the proportions of the tsunami sometime during 2006. "God" didn't give him enough information to save lives or help people prepare, just enough to get in the news with his prediction.
What do you think of this sort of thing? Is it helpful or harmful to your efforts to speak to people about Christ?

I was going to go on a long rant about Pat, but won't go there today. I have issues with him, and his alleged revelations. I only hope that the people who listen to him also study their bibles, and heed their preachers teachings.

I have issues with Pat too.
On the other hand; they laughed at Noah too. And we are in the days of Noe.

I would tend to give Pat a little more credibility if he didn't intertwine himself so much in the political world. Or support African dictators protecting his interests in diamond mines. Or tell us God wants us to drive big SUVs.

I think he does it simply for the publicity.

I don't mind pastoral men getting involved in politics, this is what sitting in the gate is all about. However, I have to question where God says for us to drive anything.
Happy are the feet that bring good news.

I try not to doubt Pat, I really really do. I don't like to think bad about any Christian Brother or Sister.
However, I think its a bit like saying water is wet to say that as we begin hurricane season, we'll have bad weather, especially since I've already heard three experts say that hurricane season would get worse and worse (no Katrina, but that's only partially due to the hurricane).
And I also think that true men of God should blend the bad with the good. Seems Pat is always bringing home the bad (with his most public statements at least). Of course, the flip-side is Joel, who never says anything bad (and seems to be on nerve medication, IMHO).
I'm curious about his statement, "If I heard the LORD right..."

Wouldn't an Osteen/Robertson debate be fun to watch?
Mesue, I understand where you're coming from about politics. I just don't think that it is a calling many Christians really have. We are told to always seek His Kingdom first, and that is in direct contrast to an earthly kingdom (government). I do believe some are called into politics for a season (and for God's reasons), but they should be very strong in their faith lest they be corrupted by power.

Nothing that man says surprises me anymore....:P
I personally think he makes a Christian's job harder in this ole world.....most lost people don't realize that just because we are Christians - that doesn't make us like that guy!!! I must admit that fellow sickens me.

Sickens you? Wow.
I may not agree with everything Pat Robertson, or whoever else may be in the public eye, says or does... but... who am I to judge them?
Even the whackos in Iran need compassion and grace if they're ever to find the Truth. Mr. Robertson may not be one to carefully select his words from time to time, but hey... he's a neighbor... love him as you would yourself. Do you make yourself sick? hehe

I'm so tired of people being chastized around here for having normal feelings. :(
I supposed I'll be chastized for saying that.

No one is judging Pat's salvation. His theology, yes. He has been proven wrong on many occasions, and the fruit of his spirit is evident.
As a Christian, we are also supposed to be above reproach, yet Pat has spoken and acted in a manner many times that bring reproach not only from the world, but also the body of believers.
He saddens me when he makes comments like he has, because it does make it that much harder to witness to the unsaved when their view of Christianity hinges on what he says.
But fault does not lie solely with Pat. The media, many themselves not knowing Christ, cover what he says as if he is the spokesman for the church.

Pat's press packet says, and I quote, "spokesman for the conservative Christian community".
If they treat him like he's the spokesman for Christianity, it's because he says he's the spokesman for the Christian community. Yep, Pat says he speaks for you and me.:(

I didn't know about that. Once again, the fruits (or nuts :P ) of the spirit shine through.
We need to pray for him :sigh: .

I read about this yesterday. After Pat Robertson's fatwa against President Chavez, I slowly stopped taking him seriously. To me, Pat Robertson is merely the church clown. I don't really pay attention to him anymore.
But I do feel sorry for the people who are "brought to Christ" through Pat. St. Matthew 23:15 comes to mind.

What does Scripture say?
Despise not prophesying. Prove all things and hold to what is true.
I don't know if he is speaking truth in this or not, but it's not my place to judge.

So, the fact that what this man says affects people that need Jesus, doesn't bother you? As for judging him, all I can do is 'hear' what he says.....his relationship with the Lord is between he and God alone.
I would never wish any harm to him - or anyone else for that matter! We are to love every soul....not their sin - and this is something I try to follow.
Do I make myself sick? Sometimes.....I am no where near the Christian I ought to be, or the kind of witness I am supposed to be for my Saviour.

The ultimate in spiritual pseudo-correctness. This guy's prophesies never come true, yet you say that it's wrong to say that he is not a prophet of God. Especially interesting in light of the scripture you posted. "Prove all things" means to test a prophet's words and only keep the ones that are true. It's not saying NOT to judge prophets, it's saying to carefully judge any prophets and to discard the ones whose prophesies are false.

I wanted to respond to your post with something witty, but decided to just say that I understand your frustration, too.
