Shalom, brothers and sisters;
I need some information - can anyone explain what is meant by "annointing with oil", it's origins etc. Are we called to do it or is it more a tradition reserved for priests and/or prophets? When or why is it done?
G-d bless and thanks

One of the other remarkable pieces was a small ceramic vial, appearing like it could well have been used to hold anointing oil, and originally have been placed upon the “stand for anointing oil.” Both of these, like all of the artifacts, were found in the same place, in a grotto adjacent to the upper room, which is located directly astride the ancient and revered tomb of King David.

There is the only one recipe in the Bible for the oil of anointing. It is found in Exodus 30:22-25. This is the recipe of the L-rd. "Moreover, the L-rd spoke to Moses, saying, Take also for yourself the finest of spices: of flowing myrrh five hundred {shekels,} and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, two hundred and fifty, and of fragrant cane two hundred and fifty, and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and of olive oil a hin. You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil."

Why these certain ingredients for the Holy Anointing Oil? Is there more than meets the eye of the quick reader? Of course! To learn of the deeper things of G-d, one should read His word as He spoke it. So, let's look at the meaning of the very words used in the Hebrew..
MYRRH is the Hebrew word Mar, which means bitter. It is the primary ingredient after the carrier oil, and its highest value is to preserve the aroma of the other scents..
CINNAMON is the Hebrew word kinamon, means upright. Although there is twelve times as much myrrh as cinnamon, this is the dominate fragrance. Likewise, as we live uprightly, the bitterness of the world has no rule over us..
CALAMUS is the Hebrew word Kaneh, which means to redeem. It is often called "sweet cane" because of its aromatic smell as it grows. Our redemption is sweet yet our lives should be lived a fragile as a cane so as not to offend those who may enjoy our fragrance..
CASSIA This plant grows only at extreme high altitudes and produces a lovely purple flower. The Hebrew word is kiddah, which means to bow the head. So should we walk in humility even though we are enrobed in royal robes and seated in heavenly places..

Exodus 30:33 warns that 'Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people." The word used for "layman" is the Hebrew word pronounced zur. It is a primary root word that means, according to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, "to be a stranger, adulteress, alien, another, enemy, estranged, foreign, foreigner, illegitimate, layman, outsider, satisfied, strange, strange thing, stranger, turned away, unusual. to be loathsome."

I personally have used plain ol Olive Oil, Shemen Zayit :) on someone, ( in fact it was an elder) and prayed over her and a migraine she had all day and had done everything possible to get rid of it and her husband ( also an elder) prayed over her, but it started to leave as we were praying together with this simple oil. By the time we left her about 15 minutes later she had her eyes open and was smiling and sitting up.
But I think it should only be used at G-ds urging, He is the one who told me to do this and how to go about it ( which was different than I've seen others do) and also had sent me to her house to pray.

Thanks Vis & Shalom sis,
Would annointing oil be used as a way of cleansing? I guess as in the context of how the Catholics would use "Holy Water"?
I'm getting confused with how different believers use the oil and hence my questions

Yes, but also a couple of years ago, a believer had told me to use it in terms of cleansing where I lived. This is all very new to me as I'd never really come across anyone using it, like today. Hence this thread.

Ahhhhhhhh, I think I know what you mean now. Cleansing , you mean spiritually? Yes, I have used it for that many times. For house blessings, and also in cleansing it of all unclean things that may be inhabiting there. I just had a recent experience with doing this for some neighbors who came from a very dark spiritual neighborhood, I mean really dark. I went through their house and the L-rD directed me about certain things that in the physical looks harmeless but He knows. and I would put oil on them and pray and had the owners pray with me. It was really odd, I have never experienced something like this before, I would go into a room and there would be a box with haphazard things in it and I would 'feel' something wasn't good in there so I would ask them and low and behold, they would pull out something that 'was not of G-d' and I told them they had to throw it out. But there were certain places in the building itself that needed this cleansing from past residients.
So I hope that is what you meant.

What kinds of things did you find in this case that were not of G-d?
Also how do you prepare for such a thing?
Thank you again

Yes, annointing with oil those places that need cleansings. My girlfriend dealt with the dark side with annointing oil, but I would not put more faith in the oil than the Lord who truly is the one who does the cleansings. She was battling the evil spirits with a superstitious approach with annointing oil and missed out on the one who is the winner in all the battles over evil. And she loves the Lord, but to do battle with annointing oil and not look up for her redemption is missing the point of why annoint.

I guess this led me onto my next question - when would using oil be needed as opposed to surrendering the issue to the L-rd? Is it more on what Zayit was saying in terms of using it when you're directed/led by the L-rd to use it?

First I would say if this is for yourself, do you hear the L-RD calling you to cleanse? It has to be his calling and in His timing too. So preparation begins with prayer. Go to him, seek his wisdom in this matter, and ask what you should do, let him guide you through it all.
Most important is if he is telling you to do this, then you must pray and ask for protection while doing this, that nothing unclean has any influence on you. You must do this for your own safety.
I don't want to tell you what I did except what I did was follow His leading through the whole thing. One thing for sure I did know was the first place I was directed to , and the object, when I prayed I felt him there so strongly my knees almost buckled. His presence was very strong and I thanked him and praised him for that, for without it, you can do nothing right.
As far as objects, I really dont' remember much, it was from him, there were certain things that looked perfectly harmless, yet when I would ask about them to the owners, they had a story to tell about them that wasn't spiritually healthy. :Some things I was directed to anoint to cleans, others I was told to tell them to just throw out!
One thing I remember was a gun holster, another was a board game, then there was a box in the kitchen and I was draw to it and saw some packages of food in it with Arabic writing on them. I asked what it was and they told me (I forget) but I told them that there was something wrong with it. I did not know what that said but I got the feeling it wasn't from G-d. A week later they told me that one of these packages had somehow slipped behind their refrigerator. They found it right before passover and reading the ingredients found it had yeast in it. But I dont' think that was the only reason, but there may have been something on there against the one true G-d?
There was also something else, clothing or purse, I think that had something on it, the woman never saw it but it stood out to me. I think it may have been a dragon. There were some other things with dragons on them as well.

I just remembered, that purse did not have dragons ( althought they had other things that did ) but rather woven into the fabric was a death mask of sorts, it jumped right out at me, but she never saw it until I asked her about it.
Also , cleansing with oil can be done by men or women I believe, but the way my husband was called to help cleanse their place was with his shofar. He blew it inside in the different rooms and around the outside of the house.

Sis, thank you for this - this whole thing and concept is so new that I really am on a high learning curve.
I realise that it's not as cut and dry as would first seem.
Thank you and G-d bless

Adonai told Moshe how to make anointing oil and what he was to use it on.
Exo 30:22-31 Moreover the LORD spoke to Moshe, saying,
23 "Also take fine spices: of liquid myrrh, five hundred shekels; and of fragrant cinnamon half as much, even two hundred and fifty; and of fragrant cane, two hundred and fifty;
24 and of cassia five hundred, after the shekel of the sanctuary; and a hin of olive oil.
25 You shall make it a holy anointing oil, a perfume compounded after the art of the perfumer: it shall be a holy anointing oil.
26 You shall use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the testimony,
27 the table and all its articles, the menorah and its accessories, the altar of incense,
28 the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin with its base.
29 You shall sanctify them, that they may be most holy. Whatever touches them shall be holy.
30 You shall anoint Aharon and his sons, and sanctify them, that they may minister to me in the Kohen's office.
31 You shall speak to the children of Yisra'el, saying, 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to me throughout your generations.
Sanctify: 1. To set apart for sacred use; consecate. 2 To make holy; purify.

Would this mix of oil have also been used on Saul by the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 10:1 or is this recipe only for temple use?

Shalom Lotuspetal_uk,
Thank you brother,
Would this mix of oil have also been used on Saul by the prophet Samuel in 1 Samuel 10:1 or is this recipe only for temple use?
I couldn't find any scripture that says that the oil that Samuel used on Saul was anointing oil. But since the choen HaGadol was anointed with anointing oil I would think that the oil Shemu'el used to anoint both Shaul and David was anointing oil.
1Sa 16:13 Then Shemu'el took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers: and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily on David from that day forward. So Shemu'el rose up, and went to Ramah.
I believe this was anointing oil that Shemu'el used. If someone comes up with scripture that says different then I would go with the scripture.
Yeshua will be our Priest-King when He comes back to rule and reign, so that makes me believe the anointing oil would be use on both priests and kings. This is not set in concrete just my humble oppinion.

I believe the oil has much to do with the spirit and you can see that in that verse above, Yovel posted.
It brings to mind the 10 virgins, those that run out of oil are those not filled with the Ruach HaKodesh.

I haven't and probably He wouldn't do that to me. I have an adversion to oily things, always have, I can't stand it on my skin, but if he could make it feel like something else, not greasy or slimy, then I am all for it! :)
Seriously, I have felt a sensation, that is all I can say to describe it, that has come upon me and I know he is there and surrounds me with his love and protection and approvale? I would describe is more like warm electricity, inner goosebumps, your inside spirit being 'lit up'. But then I still don 't think I come close to describing how it feels.

Not so much as like oil, but just a sensation or feeling of love would come over me during praise and prayer,.... and also when I'm at my wits end. :) It comes from the heart and radiates out.

mine usually starts on my head, like a father would touch you on Shabbat to say the blessing of Rachel and Leah over you. But sometimes I can actually feel him holding both my cheeks in like hands, it was a littel scary at first but then I realized he was taking my face in his hands tenderly so show his love. :)
