Ok, here is my thread starter and the topic is those things that are True.
I think of unity and I think of postings (not necessarily here on this board and I have not just one person in mind as it happens in other places) and how in some threads you'll see sometimes a person who claims to be Lutheran but doesn't exactly believe what Lutherans believe.
What bothers me personally about this is that the person is breaking unity. As Lutherans, we have our Confessions...confession means reiteration of the truth...that we have as our unity for belief and doesn't contradict scripture. Outsiders see the postings that go against what Lutherans believe and realize that we don't have unity and probably even confuse the person searching for what Lutherans believe.
I'm probably not making myself clear on what I'm trying to say. Hmmm...retry?
I think that it's great that people post, but if a person claims to be Lutheran, he/she should hold to the Lutheran Confessions and when told that he/she believes against the confessions, it is the job of that person to search out the truth. So far, I haven't found any fault with the Lutheran confessions and believe me, I've been hunting for years.
Does anyone else get bothered by the lack of unity people can sometimes bring to threads by not believing what the Lutheran Confessions say specifically? I know there are some gray areas here and there and discussions that try to deal with those are not what I'm referring to.
Again, I don't have just one person in mind here. I've seen this on other boards and other forums.

The difference is that there are those who call themselves Lutheran because they hold to the traditional and Confessional Lutheran teachings regarding the authority of Scripture and a full "quia" subscription to the Confessions. Then there are those who call themselves Lutheran because that is what their background or heritage is, and not because of the traditional and Confessional doctrines. Some people may believe that they are Lutheran simply because the sign in front of the church building they attend on Sunday morning says "Lutheran Church" on it. This is where the real probelms in dis-unity lie.
I cannot ever see a reconciliation of this seperation until such time as all who claim the name "Lutheran" hold, teach, and confess the traditional and Confessional teachings of the authority of Scripture as a whole and a full subscription to the Confessions.

Fully agreed. In my previous "Lutheran" church, I never found out what it was to be a Lutheran. What was taught there bore almost no resemblance to anything Lutheran. That is probably why my draft letter to my previous pastor showed my bitterness and cynicism so strongly.
Thank you for this post LilLamb, you have given me ideas on how to soften the letter.

I fully agree. I think everyone who would call themselves Lutheran should be familiar with at least the small catechism and the augsurg confession. Personally, I think everyone that would call themselves a Christian should be familiar with the Book of Concord.

This is the problem with the church congregation here and why I can't stomach it any longer. It's also EXACTLY why I cannot have the local DELTO pastor catechising my daughter. He said the last time he went through the Confessions (20 + years ago) he found them boring.
I can fully appreciate why there are so many Lutherans in the area who are not attending the local LCMS church. It's incredibly frustrating. :sigh:

I was confirmed in an ELCA church by a pastor who thought that the catechism was definitely worth learning. In fact he taught them in a way as to make it lively and it held my interest.

Hope and I took that confirmation class together. I can't begin to express my gratitude to that pastor for explaining the importance of the small catechism. We are now in the process of slowly teaching it to Jeremiah. I firmly believe that once he has learned it, he will find it will help him to make sound decisions in life. I also believe that it will serve as a firm foundation for how he lives his life.

Another prime example of why does this guy call himself Lutheran? Can't even get the basics.

Once again, I have to agree with you. I don't think we could get any more basic than the small catechism.

Walloffire claims to be Lutheran, but doesn't understand Lutheran basics. When I suggest catechesis, I'm saying he needs to go back and study more to learn as his postings are indicating he's not really learned in the Lutheran faith too well.

I have been a part of the Lutheran faith for a relatively short period of time. I will say, I have learned a lot here. When I'm not sure of something that's being said, I can go quickly to the small Catechism and the Book of Concord online to check it out.
Thanks to all of you who have taught me along the way!

I've read the small and large catechisms. What seems to be the problem??

I think we yell really loudly for Jim or LilLamb!! Ooh! Or KimLCMS.
Actually I think we report one of his posts and ask for an IP check.

Hope and I joined the Lutheran church back 2002 and we have worked long and hard to learn. It was a long struggle to convince my father-in-law that Lutherans are Christians. Even today we believe we have much to learn. I love to read the Book of Concord and have even installed it as a sword module in the BibleDesktop program on my computer. I firmly believe that the Book of Concord points to scripture, which is the foundation of our faith.
As for walloffire, this individual is acting quite secretive and perhaps even deceptive. I have become quite suspicious of this individual. I am hoping I am wrong about them, but at this point, I don't trust them.

I personally do not have the catechisms and the Augsburg Confession memorized, but then again I do not see a need to challenge other people's faith.
