View Full Version : Finally!!! Welcome to the CF's REAL new servers! :D

Erwin
2nd May 2006, 03:12 AM
Okay, after another 24 hours of tweaking and reinstalling, CF's new servers are finally running at top speeds! :)

CF had moved to brand new servers which are all much more powerful than our old ones - however, for some reason we were running slower - I figured the problem out and realised that this is because our operating system kernel, FreeBSD, was compiled to only see 1 processor when our servers actually have 4 - this caused CF to slow down to a crawl.

Well, the kernel was recompiled on all servers which were all rebooted.

However, in that process, the time on all servers were wrong. However, be aware that any posts made when the time was wrong will be OUT OF SYNC in the thread or forum - you'll have to look back to find them.

This has been fixed (I left work early to come home to do it).

So we are now finally on CF's new servers, with top speed!!! :D

I'm going to add another dual xeon to our mix of servers to speed up the slave database - I may be able to open up searching to more people. We'll see. Anyway, this will happen in another 6-7 hours.

Hi Erwin,
Things seem to be hanging up a bit for me.
I've cleared my cache, cookies, defragged, and did a cleanup.
Is there anything else I can do to my PC to help ??

Erwin
4th May 2006, 12:46 AM
The hanging could be interference from the slave search database - I'm getting the host to get me another dual xeon server with 15k RAID SCSI to run the slave database. This is not going to happen today, so it may be tomorrow.

it is working fine for me, just a couple of times when I posted into a thread it went white but the post went through, had to refresh.. but other then this.. working fine .. my speed is 54.0 Mbps, wireless, signal is excellent.. sometimes when my laptop runs slow on the internet, I check the other pc's in the house, if one is running slow, it slows me way down far as my signal.

Thanks Erwin

54.0 Mbps??? How on earth do you get connection speeds that fast? Are you sure you don't mean 54 Kbps?

Anyway, the site is running sporadically fast and slow for me. As others have noted, I don't think it's local traffic because other sites are running pretty fast for me.

The site runs fast, then freezes up for a while at times - I need to move the slave search database to a new server to see if that fixes it, move our php files to faster drive and tweak the ligttpd config files.

This will happen this weekend sometime probably.

It seems the same as about before it went "really slow" a while back.

5-15 seconds is sort of slow but it could be worse., I guess... but don't compare it to google. Google doesn't load as much data.

I bet it's hard to really understand how much processing we'll need since the users are always fluctuating and changing.

Sometimes it is really fast, and but in the evenings it always slows down to a crawl. And that is with less users on here.
