I think one of the reasons why men hate going to church is because most of church is a spectator sport. they just watch a show. I love how Frank Viola describes this in his book RETHINKING THE WINESKIN. It's an eye opener.

it's a reasonable book. not very theological, and what theology there is, kind of misses the point. unfortunately i haven't written my review of it yet. i have one more Sunday School class to finish and then back to fulltime reading...
i have to get the book to one of our elders who is going to be teaching a class for men only this quarter. first time my wife and i have ever been in separate Sunday School classes......

I read it awhile back...he's got a pretty good handle on the problem, and there are lots of suggestions for overcoming the problem, but I didn't think the last half of the book was very well organized, and the solutions are presented in a kind of hodge-podge manner - one here, two there, not very well outlined.

But overall, a very good book. We used it to spark discussion in our CE committee.

Bluntly: Because most churches are nothing but an effeminite experience based service that has little, if nothing to do with real practicial Christianity.

Recognize that all true Christians will be Calvinists in glory....

I read an article in the paper a day or two ago which said basically the same thing. The famanazie's and socialists have done their work well of emasculating (1. To castrate. 2. To deprive of strength or vigor; weaken.) our society and churches. Many pastors are going to have a lot to answer for.

I think it was Doug Wilson that wrote an article about this where he made the point that since the advent of modern household conveniences began to free up housewive's time in the late 1800's, women began to spend more time involved in Church matters. After about 1920 most were run by 3 women and an effiminate pastor, so seminaries started turning out a product that was saleable to the customer - the 3 women. Maybe that's a part of it.
