I was just wondering, is it proper to pray to the Sacred Heart of Jesus? Or is it more proper to pray of and acknoledge him as Our Lord and Savior? I noticed the Catholics have a thing for the Sacred Heart of Jesus/Immaculate Heart of Mary.

when we pray we always thank jesus in our prayers knowing that even in the darkest time when we think he's left us, he is still with us and wont let us go

Do you have a bible verse that mentions praying to the sacred heart of Jesus or Mary? if not my advice would be not to do it.
God Bless You!

I have not read the entire bible, but I don't believe it says anything about praying to their sacred hearts, I don't believe in the rosary praying anyways.

If its not in the bible its probably better not to. Thats my advice. You dont know where these new ideas are coming from.
Hope this helps:thumbsup:

It's not really a new idea, it's a thing the Catholics have always done.

Actually that statement is not true that this is what Catholics always did:
"The Sacred Heart of Jesus is today one of the most recognizable symbols of the Catholic faith. The image originated in France near the end of the seventeenth century when a nun named Marguerite Marie Alacoque (Often anglicized to Mary-Margaret) began to publicize her mystical visions of Jesus, who admonished her to devote herself and the country to the veneration of his heart, which she described the heart as the center of communication between humans and the Divine. St. Mary-Margaret's vision, of a heart entwined with thorns and flames, sprouting a cross from the top, was drawn from the visions of earlier mystics, and possibly from alchemical imagery common at the time.
A few decades after the Saint's death, the the bishop of Marseille, Monseigneur de Belsunce, consecrated his diocese to the Sacred Heart in an effort to spare the region from plague. The plague passed over Marseille, and the symbol became very popular, associated with acts of charity and piety and used as a charm against plague. Today, to devote oneself to veneration of the Sacred Heart is to in effect make the heart of Christ one's own- to create within oneself the love and compassion of Christ- in essence, to be Christ-like."

To answer your question I would offer a question of my own:
Why would you feel the need to pray to the sacred heart of Jesus?
Or is it more proper to pray of and acknoledge him as Our Lord and Savior?
I do not think the two are opposed. What I mean is, you can acknowledge Jesus as Lord and saviour and still pray to him and or His sacred heart. But it would seem silly to me to pray to His heart, when in fact you should just try and make His heart your own.
I noticed the Catholics have a thing for the Sacred Heart of Jesus/Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Another day another argument that I have had many times, but these two are nothing alike, as one is based on fact and the other is based on conjecture.

Hello, dreambrother. :) God give you Peace.
I'd like to offer a couple of samples of prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, but I don't want to disrupt the forum. I can promise you all that nothing contained in these prayers contradicts the tenets of faith that you hold, and I humbly submit that it may just be the unfamiliar terminology that confuses people. You know I am available for any questions you may have, and you know I won't break the forum rules. If y'all would rather I not post them, I totally understand and respect that. :) I'm always available by PM if anyone is interested.
God bless and keep you, and the Grace and Peace of our Lord be with you!

Hey zoo mom. I don't know if he was asking for examples of the prayers so much as the validity of the practice but I could be wrong. So posting them doesn't make much sense really to the conversation. But again I could be wrong.
The prayers are pretty common to find on the internet and othe rplaces if dream wants to find them.

That's very true. I was just trying to show that there's nothing 'bad' in the prayers themselves, though the practice may be foreign to some.
It's good to see you, BTW, and I hope you are doing well. I love your avatar. :D That is so me some days. LOL!

I don't see anything Scrptural about praying to the sacred/immaculate heart of Jesus or Mary. The biblical example is to pray to the Father in Jesus' name. Although I don't know that speaking directly to Jesus is wrong.

To play the devils advocate so to speak, the argument usually follows (as you know as a veteran of the GT wars) that there are alot of things not contained int he Bible that we do today in church and the other which is more popular, who says the Bible is the the final authority?
Anyway I don't want to get into that argument, but one when making this decision, should factor in what Lynn said. If in fact the Bible is your final authroity (right or wrong is not part of this conversation), then it does not make sense to offer these prayers. On the other hand, if you are not a Bible alone or Bible is my final authority Christian you may find support for these things in various earlier church writings.
There is nothing in the Bible by the way about excepting Christ into your heart, but most of us have heard this our whole lives from the pulpit so I dunno if it being scriptural has anything to do with it. I personally do not agree with the doctrines that list Mary as having an imaculate heart which is why I would swerve away from those prayers, but the ones pertaining to Jesus, I see nothing wrong with.
