Did anyone else here's parish celebrate Lazarus Saturday today? I'm just curious if all Churches generally celebrate this or if this is more dependent on the parish or jurisdiction (missions I would imagine would be an exception since it is difficult for many of them to even have weekly DLs). I know sometimes the days our parish celebrates depends not only on ability of the priest and size of the parish, but also on the tendancies of a jurisidiction.

Thanks in advance,

John

We did. I would think all Churches do. I don't know. It is one of the twelve major feasts of the Church. In the early Church it was known as "The Announcement of Pascha" and also "The Day of the Life Giving Tomb".

I really enjoyed it today. I know this sounds bad but, part of what I enjoyed was that there weren't many people there. It had a very calm quaint feeling to it. But... in the end i would prefer that i were full like any Sunday service.

We did. It is one of my favorite feasts :)

Repentant,
Are you sure that it is one of the 12 great feasts?

I have them as:

Nativity of the Theotokos
Exaltation of the Cross
Entry of the Theotokos
Nativity of Our Lord
Theophany
Meeting of Our Lord in the Temple
Annunciation
Palm Sunday
Ascension
Pentecost
Transfiguration
Dormition of the Theotokos

Palm Sunday and Saturday of Lazarus are seen as one. Well more like Saturday of Lazarus is a pre-feast of Palm Sunday. They both have a common theme, triumph and victory. Saturday reveals the enemy, which is death, and Jesus triumphs and is victorius over death by raising Lazarus, and also showing He is the source of eternal life. Palm Sunday announces the meaning of victory as the triumph of the Kingdom of God. His entrance into Jerusalem was a visible triumph. But it is more Palm Sunday that is the major feast, but they both tie together.

LOL. After Liturgy My mom went to give money for the Parish Pascha Card, and sitting around a table were 15 little old yiayias making palm crosses.

It is also the only Saturday where we Liturgically celebrate the Resurrection.

At my parish we weave the palms together and put them with pussy willows and flowers to make bouquets.

Yea that too. The Thrice Holy Hymn is replaced by the baptismal verse from Galatians ("As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ" Galatians 3:27), indicating the resurrectional character of the celebration.

At my home Church the Alter boys make the Palm Crosses. I have probably made a good few thousand in my day. I don't know who makes them where I am now. I know they make them with two here, I prefer with one, which is how we did it back home. The knot is tighter and remains tight. All my Palm Crosses I got last year from here fell apart.

We celebrated with a morning Divine Liturgy, then Great Vespers with Litya and Blessing of the Palms in the evening.

This was such a wonderful weekend. It really did have a joyful feel to it. But having 2 Chrismations and 1 Baptism probably had a lot to do with that, too.
