Where is our hospitality? Bring on the cheeses.

You could do the music standard cafe coffee-house style, with an open stage for musicians.
I could do some nice jazzy tunes on my trombone while people sporting dark glasses and turtlenecks sip cafe lattes :P

How long have you played trombone?
I've been in school band and playing trombone for almost 6 years (Best instrument ever, in my not so humble opinion :P ).
It isn't my only musical talent, though. This year I tried my hand at singing ( "Everybody have Fun Tonight" by Wang Chung in my school's 1987 themed Dinner Theatre :D ) and I was somehow convinced to do some dancing. The latter got quite a laugh.

The Taverna is for watching the Steelers win the Superbowl. So, there will always be a need for it. I foresee the day when the Taverna will also be an [Open] Taverna.
We just need to reassure the mods that this cafe won't catch on fire and burn down.
I guess we had better keep our eyes on the food in the Kitchen, yet too many chefs spoil the broth, but we don't want any smoke damage to our new cafe.

Really think so? I love the new Dr.Who series and the new doctor. I think he really does the role well. But then, I've never sat down and watched the original old series. For all I know, the new doctor might not even compare.
Mentioning suits, I have a very nice outfit I had to wear on stage for my school's dinner theatre. Light blue polyester pants with flares, a mauve shirt, a white overcoat, and a green tie with splashes of pink, purple, and red :D

Ahem.
I have some questions about fasting in the Orthodox church. What are the dietary restrictions during the Lenten fast? Are these the same in each major fast? Are these the same on regular wednesdays and fridays?
Thanks.

I would kill for a PB+J on soft wheat. PB is extremely difficult to get here and I miss it more than anything, AND it's Lenten! Get me a regular supply and I am your friend for life!!
Don't knock on my beloved PB! That stuff is solid gold here!
Actually, it was available in the 90's, but disappeared.
I have a pet theory on this one:
What do Russians consume peanuts with?
Beer!
They probably tried PB with beer!

I think your question was lost in the excitement over Dr Who (and who could blame anyone?)... so I'll tak a stab..
What are the dietary restrictions during the Lenten fast?
The Basic gist is that one abstains from most all Animal products (Dairy, eggs, meat) except, so it seems, for spineless seafood like shrimp and lobster (yeah, kind of a silly and antiquated loophole). There are more details to this, but this is the basic idea and most Orthodox don't even worry about the other rules (regarding oil and such).
Are these the same in each major fast?
As far as I know... yup. There are special days within fasts where the fast may be either harsher (like, NO eating except for bread and water at most... a true fast) or lightened up (but this is usually something that doesn't really excite to many like, you can have wine and oil on this day lol... gee... great. lol).
Are these the same on regular wednesdays and fridays?
Yes... pretty much (again, I am sure their are small variances... but when you are told to abstain from meat and dairy... pretty much anything else doesn't really matter either way. Like the absence of olive oil and wine are off limits... but a lot of people don't really care since even a simple grilled cheese sandwich is off the menu). Again, one is to fast from mostly all animal products on these days throughout the entire year except for two weeks: the week beofre the pre-fast leading up to the Great Fast (Lent) and the week after Holy week (Bright Week) where fasting is prohibited... so you better eat that steak and chunk of cheese or else!!!
But, in all of this, there is ekonomia (oikonomia or economy) which basically means a bending of the rules according to our weaknesses. This is always done on a case-by-case basis between a priest (or spiritual father if it is not the priest) and the would-be faster. For example, some people i know only fast from meat during lent and might be a little stricter on Wednesdays and Fridays during the Great Fast and then the rest of the year fast only from meat on normal wednesdays and Fridays. Monks are sticter and might only eat meat on very special days (Feast Days).
It all depends on one's ability.
But, fasting is, for the Christian, utterly useless and even harmful when done without prayer. There is absolutely no purpose whatsoever to fasting without prayer. That's called a diet. This is why it should always be done under the supervision of one's Spiritual Father.
I have even heard of cases where a priest forbids a person to fast and says taht they MUST eat meat when they are around others because they have become to prideful. So this, eating meat around others, is meant to humble them. That's why I always confess to my preist that I am being too proud about my fasting in hopes that he would FORCE me to eat a big juicy steak at Outback Steakhouse... so far it hasn't worked :sigh: lol (kidding)
Anyway... thanks for the question. someone else will better be able to answer you with the obscure details of fasting (or things I have simply forgotten) but that the gist of it all.

Bake a pie shell or 4 and let them cool.
Mix PB with powdered sugar until it is crumbly.
Sprinkle mixture liberally onto bottom of pie shell.
Fill with pudding. (Recipe calls for vanilla but we've found that butterscotch is good and I LOVE it with chocolate pudding.)
Top with Cool Whip then sprinkle some more of the PB mixture on top and let chill for a couple of hours.

Actually, there is a translation problem into Russian, because PB is NOT butter, neither is it a paste, per se. So you can call it peanut maslo (B) or peanut pasta (paste).
Actually, my non-lenten PB+J has to have butter as well on the jam side (under the jam, of course) :yum:

Yes, she uses sugar-free everything and it is delicious. Since I eat very little sugar anyway, I don't notice that it's a little less sweet than the regular. In fact, since I eat very little sugar, the regular pies are almost too sweet for me if I eat some of them.

I found this (http://www.recipe-recipes-message-board.com/forum/view_topic.php?id=919&forum_id=10) recipe online for a poppyseed roll. It sounds similar to what my Grandma makes, except she will use prune or apricot filling in place of the poppyseeds. She's also used walnuts in the past. Basically, once you get the dough down, you can fill as you like. She usually dusts it with confectionary sugar before serving.
I'll check with her tonight for her recipe.

And for round two, we have for appetizers, dolmathes, feta and hummus, leg of lamb, roasted potatoes, orzo, roasted green beans, and for dessert, forgivensinner's chocolate peanutbutter pie. That was a HUGE hit and dad really appreciated the sugar-free version, but everyone missed the galatebureko. This was the first year in a long time without it. In years past, Greek Easter was always just an excuse to have a big family dinner. This year it really meant something!
Oh, and do I get my Greek card taken away if I mention that I still can't stand retsina wine?

Fantastic! Every year, my dad drags out a bottle of retsina and makes us have a glass. I can't stand it, but he likes to jokes it's because I'm only half Greek. However, this is then usually followed by ouzo shots :D

What is this? Where do you get it?
It's a rose drink (It's concentrated like a syrup so you mix it with water).
It can be found at any Greek or Midle Eastern grocery.
Not to be confused with Rose Water which is clear and meant to be added to Desserts. Best added to the syrup poared over baklava

Have you ever had baklava made with orange flower water instead? It's wonderful but I haven't made it in years.

Oh my goodness, yes I have and it is heavenly. Blossom water and rose water are interchangeable (but offer different flavors and are not to be mixed) but are often left out in Desserts soaked in syrup when you buy them in the stores. That's why you have to make them yourself ^_^

:D
I am grateful that she started that thread to keep the beer/bier from spilling onto other threads and generally disrupting them.
Enjoy your beer. Have one for me. (I am allergic to barley malt which can cause me to have amnesia via a blackout).
Now back on topic ....
Anyway, I wish that CF had a warning box that people would have to read and acknowledge each time they entered the forums where atheists/unbelievers are free to engage Christians in religious discussions.
Once upon a time we had a thread about how dangerous it is to venture into those forums ... and how even sincere prayerful Christians can be led into temptation and doubt.
If you go over to those non-Christian forums and subject yourself to those atheists who propose an argument on their terms, there is no winning that argument. You cannot argue with people who only see things from a materialistic experiential viewpoint, and who will not accept the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers. The supernatural has no reality to them. Case in point --
I am taking a class in linguistics where we got into a very heated debate over metaphors.
Descartes said, "I think therefore I am."
George Lakoff, in his book Metaphors We Live By, asserts that people think in metaphors, therefore truth cannot be absolute, but is only relative. This book is creating a lot of doubt in people. Lakeoff is basically stating that those who believe in an absolute truth are holding onto false Greek philosophical thinking.
I recently found out that several devout adult Christians I have known here at CF have lost their faith. And they are good honest people, but now they are left in a state of sincere doubt and confusion. And they are not at all happy in this state. They really need our prayers.
I have been occasionally thrown into a state of doubt too when I have discussed my faith with nonbelivers, especially when they discuss the problem with pain and death of innocent people. I know several good people who were Orthodox but ceased believing after a bitter divorce or a sudden death in the family.
We cannot judge, but we must pray for each other and for those who are sincerely struggling to find the truth.

The Cafe is a hospitable gathering place for our separated brethren who are struggling in the faith.
The Orthodox Church is like a hospital which ministers to us sick sinners.
Let us kill the fatted calf, for Christ is Risen.
Let us celebrate the feast, for Indeed He is Risen.

Descartes said, "I think therefore I am."
I am sorry my french friend Descartes, but you are wrong. You do not have existence because you think, you have existence because God wills it. You existed before you were born, because you existed in the will of God. It simply was not the will of God for you to be born at that time. A better thought would be "I am, because God wills it." Perhaps if you thought like a German does, you would not have encountered the error you did Mein Herr Descartes.

They were. It's the same kind of Rubbermaid 150gallon horse trough that Matrona was baptised in. See it in the group picture? Its about 4 ft long, 2.5 ft across, and 2 feet deep. More than enough to submerge 6ft tall adults in!
The little font you see as well in the group picture was for the little 40day (ish?) old preemie looking baby that was baptised.
MariaRegina
29th April 2006, 05:08 PM
The horse trough was barely visible in the photo. Now I see it.
I was like -- This is a miracle. How did he fit into that tiny font?
Thanks for your explanation.
If the photo had been a wee bit lighter, then I would have seen the horse trough more clearly. But that is an excellent clear photo by the way. Others have taken pictures in church, but the incense casts a cloud over everything.

29th April 2006, 05:13 PM
Digital cameras are wonderful. PLus, the incense wasn't too bad. It only seems to be really bad at the beginning of Vespers and throughout a Presanctified.
Finangling the camera settings and working on being REALLY still when taking pictures so you can turn the flash off and not blur too badly are also good things.
Overall, I took about 70 pictures. We had a lot of memories to record for all those different catechumens!! I pretty much got a picture of each part of the service for each person. The worst thing was trying to get the chrismations, because they were standing so much farther back and Fr. was usually right in the sight line blocking whomever I was trying to take the photo of.

We commit many sins every day, and many times those are the unknown sins.
And these unknown sins can be the most offensive and we may not even be aware of them, but others are.

Yes, we are all very sinful creatures, myself the most sinful of us all. However, we are also the children of God and he knew how many hairs would be on our craniums before we were even born. Let us not forget that God is a loving and merciful God and he will not hesitate to show us that love and mercy if we simply strive to attain a deeper love for him and his creation.
