View Full Version : Confused about Pascha

From what I understand, Orthodoxy dates Pascha by using a formula that says (simplified) that Pascha occurs the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, and after the first day of Passover;
and that the Western church does not take Passover into account when determining the date for Easter.
BUT, since Western Easter does occur *after* the first day of Passover (today) this year, then why is Pascha still a week later than the West this year?
There must be another factor that I'm unaware of. Thanks!

I think it states that passover has to be completed. As it started last night it will not be over for a week. Just in time for Holy Thursday. If it was simply after the first day of passover then the "meta ton Iudon" part would not happen as we would have Pascha during the passover - this is exactly what the "meta ton Iudon" thing is for.

"Change from Jews" or "Different from Jews"

Because neither east nor west uses the real moon to determine it. They use old ecclesiastical tables which may differ a little from reality - the West uses one with an 84 yr cycle, the East a 19 yr cycle.
"after the Jews", most likely.

Yes, the fact that Orthodox are cheap, and will do anything to take advantage of a good sale. This includes "After Christmas" and "After Easter" sales, where holiday goods are 50% off!
What?
That's the explanation my Dad told me...
