View Full Version : ATTENTION: CF will be upgrading hardware and changing datacenters...

Erwin
10th April 2006, 10:58 PM
Due to recent downtime and slow speeds, I'm planning to change ALL our server hardware from Dual Xeons to Dual/Dual Core Opterons and move to a different data center.

This should happen over the next couple of weeks.

This will also DOUBLE our running costs so I want to thank all the Site Supporters for their continuing financial support.

I'll keep people posted.

Ummm... if I don't much miss my guess it will take a lot longer than that. I've transferred forums about a few million posts less than CF, and it took me about 12 hours. I bet this place is massive! My guess we'll see 3-4 days of downtime over the transfer.

11th April 2006, 06:59 AM
Oh no, please don't say 3 to four days, but i'm sure you wouldknow since you've done it before. I'm sorry that it has to cost so much too.

Erwin, can yougive us a warning date asyou approach closer? Thanks, ganaan

Downtime should be in the range of a few hours or less (I hope). I'll be doing it in stages.

I'm negotiating with a new datacenter at the moment, but it looks like our costs will almost exactly double when we move - all servers will be based on Dual Opteron Dual Core, with 4 Gb RAM, SATA Raptors with RAID 0, and 1000Mb uplink in a private network also with 1000Mb between.

Nice.........

Not cheap, but nice.........

The ads and subscriptions plans will not cover the monthly costs, so I may have to think of some ways of raising more funds... possibly increasing subscription plans here on CF, or some other means. I am loathed to add more ads.

Dear Erwin, You are so precious. Do you know how many people come to Christ through this site. It is awesome. I'm so sorry it will cost double, and I pray for more ways to increase revenue. I just want to thank you for everything you've done for us through Christ. Thank you for the moderators and the whole thing.

God bless, Tapero

Not really, you sort of answered your own question. Server *demand*.. but there isn't necessarily a huge amount of demant for the older posts.

There aren't hoards of people looking through the really old threads usualy. Primary server demand probably can be attributed by large percentage to new or recently new threads.

The very old threads that are lying around aren't really placing any stress on the system, they are just taking up space(and space I'm assuming isn't really the issue). But there would have to be enough people accessing them to really contribute significantly to slowing down the site, and I doubt its a huge factor

~ ~ the less space required would reduce costs :) not increase speed:wave:

Erwin why don't you try deleting the very old threads and unused accounts, (like from 2003 and back) won't that reduce the server demands :)
In my opinion:
No it won't reduce the server demand. What caused the server demand to go up is people visiting the site.
Although I have only been here for about 6 months, deleting post from the 2003 wouldn't make a significant different. Unused account should not take up the server load because they are not being used.

What costs are going to increase? The fixed costs or the variable costs?

If it's just the fixed costs, then a one-time fundraising event is good. If it's the variable costs, we'll have to find a way to increase revenue.

Thrivent is for Lutherans, but it's worth a try. I think CF would have to be a non-profit organization to qualify.

You're right though, I forgot Thrivent was a Lutheran org., but there are others. Also, they'll double any fundraising if Thrivent members are involved, and there's got to be at least a few on CF. Thrivent gives to NPR as well, so I think it might be at least worth looking in to.

dual core opterons... opterons as in multiple... scsi...

That sounds pretty spiffy, I hear that the scsi are more reliable than sata over the long run at least. I'll definately have to come up with some cash to spare to support a site running such fine hardware.

Be very careful here, Erwin. Dual-core technology is very much in it's infancy. Intel's long range plans call for 18-core chips to be on the market by mid-2007. Which is to say, that if Intel pulls off what the bigwigs at thier company think they can do, dual-core CPU's are going to be very expensive space heaters within a couple years.

None of this stops me from having a dual-core 2.8Ghz on my desk, now. Then again, I got this thing for the cost of 5 or 6 tanks of gas. You're just talking about spending a rather substantual amount of money right in the middle of a technological evolution

I'd stay with the SCSI too, Erwin. While WD Raptors have gotten better each time, the fact that they are still not as speedy as some SCSIs (10k RPM Raptor vs. 15k RPM SCSI) and still have the same storage (150gb) shows that it probably would make CF work quicker and smoother. The only advantage the Raptors have is in cache.

I have a couple ideas to increase donations to help offset the costs :

1)Set up a po box just for people to send money orders for donations for those of us who cannot use paypal and or/do not have access to use it but wish to donate and if need be increase membership amount accordingly to what your bank would charge to convert funds to your currency so there is no loss for you and the site is supported by more people .

2) For those who can and do use paypal for membership who bless others with site supporter status , I suggest that you offer the donor as well as the person being given the membership the dollar amount of blessings that come with the dollar amount they donated so they are blessed while they bless others and this also would increase donorship for the site .

For example, if jane doe blesses jonny appleseed with a 3 month site supporter status , instead of just giving the 10,000 blessings to johnny , also give jane doe who donated 10,000 blessings also .

This blesses the donor and gives added incentive for others to bless others with site supporter and those who are already site supporters blessings others would benefit as well and it supports the site and might increase donations (even though the best reason is to help support the site).

Anyway just a couple ideas ...

Some people want to donte but don't have a credit card and if they got one the only place they would use would be for here. If there was a p.o. box we could just send a check or money order but make sure we keep a recipt ourselfves. I know many including me would go this way:)

Will we know before it happens like the day before or something is Chrisbot going to pm eveyone to tell them the site will be down? B/c many won't see this thread and many are worried about their pets dying b/c maybe when you get finish upgrqding that it would be enough time for pets to die like ones with low health and all:)

This site will always remain a free site. :)

I'm still negotiating the hardware - we are definitely going to Dual Processor Dual Core Opterons, the question is what else. Raptor drives with RAID 0 too.

I've installed a couple of EMC SANs relatively recently. They are fantastic, however they are also horrifically expensive: the ultimate in high availability storage. With a couple of servers in a cluster, fibre channel to SATA RAID10, you could perform system maintenance with zero downtime.

Add to that a reverse proxy such as iChain and this site would be screaming! I installed iChain at a site a few months ago and it reduced server load by 90% and doubled throughput. Reverse proxy's are the way to go - they also add an extra layer of security. The one I installed allows three levels of secure access, one of which involves the use of token-based authentication, so you don't need to hand out insecure passwords to high-level administrators.

I'm pretty sure the site I setup is close to unhackable. At least, half the time I can't get in myself!

One possible scenario to dramatically increase throughput and minimise downtime without adding faster servers:

At times when our beloved CF forum is down for repair/upgrades, etc., you can find the CF Mirror site here in web links too:

Just in case anyone has missed the link above. :)

Confirmed our new server specs - very nice - database server will have Quad Opterons, 8 x SCSI hard drives with RAID PCI-X etc.

I'm also going to switch from using Linux to FreeBSD and Apache to lighttpd. :) Wish me luck! I have to learn a new OS!

Our image server will be a Dual Xeon. But all the other servers are AMD - Opterons are way better (apparently). Our main webserver is a dual processor, dual core Opteron (almost like a quad Opteron).

This is going to happen this weekend.

HOWEVER - the downtime will be minimal because I'm going to try a new-fangled way of migrating to the new server - the downtime will really only be time to freeze the database from new posts so that it is copied to our new database server, then the current webservers can point to it.

In other words, downtime will be approximately 20 minutes at the most of not being able to post new posts. :)

That's my prediction at the moment - pray that nothing goes wrong!
