View Full Version : What happened to CF over the past 8 hours???
Erwin

Hi all
I discovered that at around 4:50 am Melbourne time CF must have gone offline because that was the last time there were posts to the site.
I happened to check the site from work at around 11:30 am and discovered the whole site was offline!
Can anyone tell me what happened right before the whole site crashed? Were there a lot of users at the time?
Thanks.

Right when I saw it flickering there were only 1327 users online Erwin. It was very strange. It just froze...then when we went back to log on it would just be at a standstill then 5 minutes later it would say Page Cannot Be displayed.
Glad you got it working again!

No idea whatsoever but it's wonderful it's back up!
I could view cached pages, but it wouldn't load the site until about 5 minutes ago. So I can only say it wasn't me. ;)

I got it working by rebooting ALL of our servers manually via remote.
But we rarely have to do that.
I assume we got too busy or something.
It's time I change hosts I think... we need more servers!!!

Well, it's such a big site! Maybe we should start banning members...?
Haha ok i'm in a weird mood. I'm just happy CF's back up.

Well, I wasn't here when it crashed, but I was here before it did, and it was running REALLY slowly the whole morning here.
probably doesn't help...I think there were about 1300 users on when it was slow for me.

Does this mean that we will have significant down time sometime in the near future?

It was running really slowly. I was playing a game right before it crashed. I finished and went back to the forums, it blinked, turned blue, and then froze. I thought it was my computer, so I debugged, came back and there was an error message. Took me a while to figure out it was not my computer. Thanks for figuring it out Erwin. Hope it does not cause too many problems for you in the future.

Erwin, my father and i's impression was that it was a DNS problem.... he's a sysadmin so he should know... but other than that i have no idea. on my end, it would load the little cross/globe icon in the location bar, and that's it. strange.

same with me, the cross/globe icon would go up in the location bar, but then it would just be a blank screen, nothing would show up, not even an error message for me.
I'm really glad it's back up again though, it was strange coming home from a long day and wanting to post and then the page not loading and I started to think it was my internet acting up, but all the other pages were working so I was confused.

I was on. The posts would barely go thru and the last few weeks have gotten slower and slower each day when you click control panel . send, or really click anything. It was taking like a minute or two to go thru. Also the last few days the pages are going back to the FIRST post on the thread. Then nothing would work so I had to click the threads off. Then I couldnt get back on. It said page cannot be displayed until not too long ago- then occasionally it showed error and said Email has been sent to you and I was thinking -- "he is asleep and doesnt know it.".

Early this afternoon it displayed some sort of "problem with the database" message when you went to the main page (I wasn't even logged/trying to login yet). Then later it displayed the generic "Page cannot be displayed" message all evening... I missed CF... So glad it's back online! Thanks, Erwin! :)

I have not noticed this. I think it may have happened once but I don't remember it happening any more than that.

I've been having the same problem. It seems better with Internet Explorer than with Firefox (or whatever it is that Netscape has), and I thought I was having browser problems. Maybe it is a combination of the browser and high usage?

At 9 am EST, I was online. I think I did sign in but sign out because my classroom was move to a different room.
I don't remember when tonight in EST I saw the database error. It was probably around 9 to 10 pm EST. I am glad it is working.
Other than that, I was rarely on today.

I was told that Firefox was better than IE. Is this true for most? When I got on a pc at 1 pm today, CF was fine. But when I got home around 2, it told me that it could not display. I figured it wasn't the modem doing it.

It was acting really weird. I got 4 or 5 PMs, the same one from the same person. There were about 1280 people online. My flashing message saying I had a new PM would not clear even though I had opened all of them and restarted my browser. Then I started getting a (Bad Response from Server) message and then nothing.

Well, I was nervous all day (I live in Chicago) that my athiest boss had put up some firewall to keep me out.
Seriously, I couldn't get in at about 1pm CST and 4pm CST...the first time I got a "could not connect" and the second time a "Database error, email has been sent" (wonder how many emails poor Erwin got...)

I don't know, but right before it crashed i couldn't find my pet. Did it die? i didn't get any PMs or anything.... it was one of the oldest pets on CF - nearly two years old. I have no clue where poor Roses Noses is gone. :(

nuh uh... I think the database server crashed or something... I use opera so it doesn't time out so easily, but I got this message after about 5 minutes....
There seems to have been a problem with the database. Please try again by clicking the Refresh button in your web browser. An E-Mail has been dispatched to our Technical Staff, whom you can also contact if the problem persists. We apologise for any inconvenience.

There was some kind of contest to see if the previous record for number of users online at once could be broken on the 10th. Maybe that was a factor.

I was on right when it crashed. There were over 1300 users, about 60 % of them were guests if not a little more. The site was sluggish all day, and the CB wouldn't refresh automatically when the box was checked. Even when we would click on chat/refresh it wouldn't refresh and so people clicked again and double posted instead.
My last post was around 255pm eastern time, after that I was not able to get on at all. My question is how much access do the guests have to the CF site and is that a factor for the sluggish drain on our site?
Keep it up Erwin, you're doing a great job!

Hmmm - guess it depends on where you live - it happened at about 10AM EDT - I'd been up for 5 hours by then! :)
