Well, if it helps any, I haven't been able to watch it yet tonight because Harry Potter was on at the same time, and my kids wanted to watch that, so we have taped Dr. Who, and will watch it later on. Probably doesn't help any. :sorry:

not even a little...unless you are going to volunteer to mail the tape to Texas...

oh well...I guess I'll just pop in the 3 Doctors...I'm feeling nostalgic...

And now, the answer to the Riddle!

Unfortunately, no one gets the prize, so I'll simply put it in the STR Bank :)

First, here is the riddle again, one more time:

Think two letters; don't be deceived.
One or the other above,
And one is not the 4th.
There is only one mistake above,
You can surely see:
For there is no repeat of it,
It that is essential to language.

And now, the interpretation:

1. Think two letters; don't be deceived.
2. One or the other above

Think two letters...one or the other above. The "above" in line 2 is obviously line 1. The "two letters" are the two letters, one one each half of the line (as divided by both count and by the semicolon), that are found as the first letter at least twice: T in the first half and D in the second half.

Thus:

1. Think two letters; don't be deceived.
2. One or the other above

3. And one is not the 4th.

The fourth is, of course, the 4th letter in the alphabet. So, eliminate D...but perhaps not; here's why:

4. There is only one mistake above,

What then is the mistake? Well, if you look again in Line 1, the last half reads "don't be deceived." So there is a deception. That could be the mistake, or, it could be something else, so let's read on.

5. You can surely see
6. For there is no repeat of it
7. It that is essential to language.

What is essential to language that we can see all over the riddle? Words? Yes, but again, I refer you to Lines 2 and 3. It is focusing on letters, which are essential to language. That's the answer of Line 7. Now that we know what "it" is, we can return to line 6. There is no repeat of "it." It is a letter; one of the letters referred to in Line 2. That letter isn't repeated again throughout the riddle, "you can surely see" (Line 6).

So the mistake isn't that there was a deception, but the mistake is the entirety of Line 3. Line 3 was therefore the deception, since if we follow Lines 4-6, we notice that the letter "T" is repeated again, but the letter "D" is never repeated once it was used in Line 1.

The answer to the riddle is D and D.

Or, if you will, D&D. A very popular RPG...

...which I am pleased to announce that, with talks with one soon-to-be-mod, is interested in starting a STR D&D game and campaign.

It would be a place where Evangelicals and Anglo-Catholics, Low and High Churchers, AC, Continuing, and Reformed Episcopal Anglicans, can meet together and play as equals, requiring cooperation, teamwork, and strategy (and a bit of luck) to "win" the game.

So....there's the answer to the riddle. Anyone game?

Yes...and no. Like all things, practice makes perfect.

If you have a good imagination, you'd definitely have an edge.

Edit: I should also mention that the first group would be a trial run, which would be a slower-paced so as for people to grasp the concept. In reality, the game is hard to master, though the rules are usually straight forward and easy to get.

it's not really that the rules are all that hard...it's more that there can be a lot of them...the nice thing about D&D is just about any rule can be optional...this comes in handy when you are playing 2nd ed and you are trying to calculate initiative (which require a masters degree in thoeretical mathmatics...)

Too true; too true. Especially the last part, though I'd argue THAC0 is worse ;)

Actually, it would be a combo of 2e and 3.5e, using the best of each, since there are things in both that I don't like. For example, Rangers went down to d8 hit dice in 3.5e, which will not be the case in our game. In addition, I don't like the fact that you really must roll HIGH in 2e to even get benefits or at least no penalties when it comes to ability scores, so I'll be following the 3.5 model in this case (though I'm keeping exceptional scores...but for each of the six ability scores. There'll also be exceptional weakness too and subability scores will be available too!).

And, of course, some home rules. One of my favorites was that mages in heavier cloth robes get a 1 pt bonus to their Armor Class. I'm seriously thinking of keeping that.

if we are going to use some 2 ed rules then can we play kits?...my wife was murder with the Elven Archer kit...and I play a mean spellfilcher...

If I have the rulebooks or can be supplied with them, then I'll definitely consider it. I'm thinking on augmenting how prestigue classes work, but for at least a while and until I've decided, they'll work as they do.

As for kits, they'd be, just to give an example, so that you could have a samurai paladin without being a dual class samurai/paladin. If you want to just be a samurai, then there is an actual samurai class. So a samurai paladin wouldn't have a many "samurai-y" powers as the real deal; but he or she would be a true samurai.

Remember though: the first group will be a trial run. It will allow newbies to get the theory and practice. So no prestigue or kits for the first run. After that, all systems go! :)

Higgs2, the language isn't tough. Plus I'll be supplying rule books to all and the first game would be much slower paced. Especially since it seems Hus is an experienced role-player, and that I have another experienced role-player who is most likely to join, you'd have three experts to help you out. :)

I want 6 players for the first game. So far, I have:

Myself (Dungeon Master)
SirTimothy (Player 1)
Hus1415 (Player 2)
Karen Freeinchristman (Player 3)
[Possible Other (Player 4)]

I still need 2 or 3 more people.
Okay, I'll try...

Hi. I hear this place has ale.

I don't know why, but I simply had to look up facts about ale after your post... (from Epinions.com):

What Makes an Ale?:

The primary distinction of ale is the fermentation process. When the wort (pre- fermented malt and hop) mixture is ready for fermentation, the brewer adds yeast, which then converts the wort to beer. The type of yeast used is what will determine whether or not the beer is classified as ale or lager.

Ale yeast is commonly referred to as “top- fermenting”. What this means is that the mixture of wort, after yeast has been added, will begin to form a thick layer of foaming action on the top of the wort. If you have experimented with making homebrewed ale, you have probably witnessed this. The bubbling action takes place at the top of the mixture, as the yeast converts the malt sugar into ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide.

Ales were the first beers to be produced. Ale is fermented in warmer temperatures than lager- around 60 to 75 degrees. Ales also ferment faster than lager.

Taste Characteristics of Ale:

When ale is brewed, the top- fermenting yeast produces a large amount of esters. An ester is any of a class of organic compounds corresponding to inorganic salts that are formed from an organic acid and an alcohol. These esters impart a fruity taste to the ale. Pale ale and India Pale Ale, in particular, often have a citrus- like taste, resulting from the esters.

Ales usually have a sharper, stronger taste than lager, with a more pronounced flavor of hops. The alcohol level of ale is generally stronger than that of lagers, but this isn’t always true. You can’t just assume that your glass of ale is going to be more alcoholic than a glass of lager. There are some lagers that are just as strong as some types of ale, and there are some ales that are less alcoholic than their strong taste indicates. You need to read the label, or do a little research, to know for certain.

One other consideration to make, when serving ale, is the temperature. Ale is usually more complex than lager and it tastes best if served a little warmer. Unlike lager, which people like to drink very cold, ale is best served around 50 degrees. If ale is served too cold, the cold temperature will numb the palate and many of the good, complex flavors will be hidden. It’s still very common for restaurants (and individuals) to serve their ale ice- cold, but it was really never intended to be drank this way. As a general rule, ale will taste best if you allow it to warm up just a little bit.

Types of Ale:

Although ale is not as popular in the United States as lager, there are actually more styles of beer that fall under the ale classification than the lager category. Remember- any beer that uses top- fermenting yeast is, in effect, an ale.

Ales include most of my personal favorite beer styles. Some types are obvious because they include the word “ale” as part of the name. This would include such styles as Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Cream Ale, and Scotch Ale. Other beer types that fall into the ale category are Stout, Porter, Barley Wine, and Kolsch. Wheat beers are a mixed lot. Most wheat beer is ale, but some are brewed as lager.

Final Thoughts:

I prefer my beer to be rich, heavy, and as full- bodied as possible. Because of this, it only makes sense that I prefer ale instead of lager. Speaking generally, I would almost always choose a bottle of ale over a bottle of lager, but there are some exceptions.

Ale is more popular in some countries than others. In England, for example, ale is the standard beer of choice. In the United States, lagers are more popular because they have been the standard of mass- brewing for quite some time. I would like to see the trend change, and have more American brewers produce ale, but I’m not holding my breath.

So, there you have it, a short educational lesson on the characteristics of ale. Next time you’re asked to define the differences between ale and lager, you won't have to stand there with a look of confusion on your face. You can speak confidently, and impress your friends with your vast knowledge. Cheers!

I'd love a huge bowl of calorie free virtual ice cream, with lots of carmel and fudge ribbons and nuts, too! whipped cream on top.

Hi, I'm here, Karen! Just came back from the Elephant Bar and a celebration for nephew Shaun's graduation from the correctional officer's academy--16 weeks of training to become a prison guard in our (in)famous Folsom Prison --strains of Johhny Cash's FP Blues in background.

What a job for a young Christian man! The speaker at the ceremony advised the graduates to not lower themselves to the prisoners level but to work to elevate the prisoners to theirs--wahoo--what a ministry!:help:

Before the late lunch, I actually had a Sweet Manhattan for the first time in 20 years--wouldn't post that except this is a pub

God bless us one and all.

Gosh, it's like a ghost town around here.

*spots a large tumbleweed; breaks it up and puts it on the fire*

*the tumbleweed crackles and spits sparks out onto the wooden floor*

*karen goes around with a squirt-gun, putting out the mini-fires that result*

PS--Sacto Kings take on the San Antonio Spurs in Texas today at 2:30 PST -- we are #8 seed vs. SA #1 seed, so a miracle is needed to get past the Spurs in the best of 7 first round--

Go Kings!
