If any of you have any information or information sources I'd be most grateful :)

Kej, this is my first Passover also. So much to learn! I am the most nervous about taking my kids out of school on the first and last day of Passover/unleavened Bread. My Rabbi so kindly typed me a letter but my kids go to a Christian school that celebrates Easter and most definately NOT Passover. I just don't want my kids to take any heat for their faith- even in the Christian school!:preach:

Our first Passover Sedar was a "Pizza Passover Sedar" We ordered and had delivered Hawaian Style Pizza (our favorite back then;))and salad and pop (Eazy no fuss).....It was fantasic and I will never forget it! So as you can see anyone can have a Sedar with little knowlege of what to do:clap:^_^

That's actually an excellent idea! Thank you so much. I'm so confused by all the "do's and don'ts", but I've felt drawn toward Messianic Judaism for a couple years now and would like to learn how to participate in the celebrations.

Yes, it will be interesting. We have our family seder on this week and then next Mon. Our Synagogue hosts a large one for the community.
I had an idea and was wondering if it was wrong. Since I am new to this please tell me! We always made a BIG deal about Easter...hiding eggs, big baskets, decorating, even presents.:sorry: Yeah, we were really bad. Anyway, I thought it is going to be hard on the kids. I explained why we weren't doing Easter and they were on board with me.
Since this is their first year, I thought I would make Passover have a hidden surprise. When they look for any yeast I thought I would hide a board game for playing later. I most definately DO NOT want to commercialize this or lessen the importance. Am I wrong or make it any less blessed?

Please, if you think this would be a no-no, or you have an alternative way of helping kids adjust please tell me! I am trying to please our Father in the right ways and if that would be wrong, I want to know!

When the children find it they can ransom it back to the host of the sedar for what ever the Host thinks it's worth ...but the sader cannot end untill the deal is made! One child got a new bike for his ransom of the Aficoman....We got eternal life for Yeshua's ransom so no price is too high.....Our kids have gift certificates to their favorite clothing store waiting for them(they need new clothes this time of year more than candy so every one is gonna be happy;)) and I suspect they will have a big amount of $$ put on them:clap:

That is where I can add something special! I know nothing can be better than what G-d gave us but for my kids it is hard to adjust to a new thing. Only question...I have 2 kids, I KNOW my older son will find the matzah. My daughter would be crushed. How do you deal with this?

Wags
8th April 2006, 09:47 PM
In our family the kids steal the akifoman from its (obvious) hiding place and then they appoint a spokesperson to do the bargaining for them. The "ransom" is shared equally amoung all the children presnt (and the cost of the ransom is contibuted to by all the adult males - usually fathers - that are present.)

A very thorough (tradional) source is http://www.chabad.org/holidays/passover/default.asp
Covers pretty much everything you need to know about how to conduct a seder. Including activities for children. In particular check out the "seder wizard" it will walk you through what to do step-by-step.

You can find a variety of Messianic Haggadah's on-line - here is one I came across: http://www.ccpc.net/~ephraim/seder.htm It is available as a MS Word document too.

You know what they say about a little knowledge being a dangerous thing..... :D You've come a long way since celebrating with ham and leavened pizza. (Now if it was a kosher-4-passover pizza, ...... not very traditional, but okay.)

I regard it as a mitzvah to cook for everyone - this year we will have about 14 guests at our home. It's going to be a little more difficult to get it all done with two kids under the age of two, but as scripture says I can do all things through messiah who strenthens me....

Only question...I have 2 kids, I KNOW my older son will find the matzah. My daughter would be crushed. How do you deal with this?they have to work as a team to decide about the ransome, to help the winner get the best prize he can...you offer door #1 which may have a small toy and yet they know something better is box #2 , then offer box #2, that has something alittle better but still they know the best is last and that is what is in the 3rd box or bag or whatever, and they will most likely choose this one (of course they will work together to get the biggest prize which will be gifts for both of them....just as Yeshua's ransome was a gift ,not just for one, but for the whole world too)

The night of the 12th is the first night (passover). The night of the 13th is the second night (feast of unleavened bread) . Traditionally there are seders held on both nights.

Jewish days are reckoned according to scripture - evening and morning were the first day etc... so sundown on our April 12th is the start of the first day of Passover.

One bible teacher has noted that significant world events usually happen at feast times.

The last day (8th day) is a Shabbat - it is treated like the weekly shabbat. Oh and traditionally you would not go out and eat anything made with leavening even after sundown because it probably would have been created during the festival time. But the following morning it is perfectly acceptable to hit your nearest (kosher) pancake house! :D

That is awesome that you are will be hosting your first seder. I just had a few more guests added to my table (gotta get another 6 ft folding table) - my father just had to go and do some inviting.... but he forgot to ask me if I had room before he did it.

Glad you are feeling more comfortable with it. There is a definate learning curve - even my husbands aunt who has hosted huge seders for 50+ years says that she still learns something new every year.

Today I'm baking - got 6 pans of brownies in the oven right now, and coffee cake is ready to go in when those come out and then the potato kugel will go in after that.... So much to get done in the next 24 hrs!

What do you think is the most over looked item that has yeast in it? I am making a last sweep of my cabinets, pantry, [wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth]. and I just know I am missing something with yeast in it that I don't even suspect. And my pantry looks like we're saving groceries for a famine! So, looking at the ingredients of every single item would take me a year!

Wags

We (my household) don't celebrate Easter.

We do however celebrate the Feast of First Fruits as commanded in Scripture. (Lev 23) It is the day that Yeshua rose from the grave. It is on the 17th of Nissan (starts at sundown on April 15th this year).
