About bible studies. I wish there was a half-way decent Bible study for youth on the island, rather than the ones that I have hopefully humorously characterised in the following sketch. Does it sound familiar to anyone? ;)

Timothy

Study guide leader opens in long prayer thanking God for bringing them together in his wonderful miraculous mighty power, and thanking him for the Epistemic tendencies within this group...

Study Guide Leader (SGL):So, group, today we're going to look at St. Henry's fourteenth epistle to the Epistemenes. Chapter thirty-nine and a quarter, verse four. In the Newly Uninspired Version, it says: "All Men who have elvis-style hair are sinners."
Does anyone want to tell me what they think the Bible says about men with elvis-style hair?

Member One: Well, in my Leatherbound Unauthorised version...

Member Two pushes in quickly: You mean the Queen Elisabeth version?

Member One: Riiight. Yeah. Well, it says idolaters.

SGL: Yess.... but didn't we agree to only use the NUB in this group? I thought we agreed it was the most accurate....

One: But... But... *retires, crushed and doesn't say anything else*

SGL, brightly: "So, does anyone else got any thoughts about men with elvis-style hair?"

Three, rather slowly: "They're, like, doin' sommat wrong?"

SGL: "Nearly, Nearly, we're getting closer... what do we call that?"

Three: "Uh, sin?"

SGL: "Right. So..."

Four, suddenly looking bright, quickly changing out of the extreme boredom from before: "Men who've got elvis-style hair are sinners?"

SGL: "RIGHT! Brilliant! I would NEVER have thought of that. Let's meet up next week to discuss the second half of the verse...."

Spot on Timothy!

I think St Paul would have quite a lot to say to many of us (including myself!) if he was alive today.

Its one reason why I don't allow the KJV in Bible Studies ;)

Cute man :D

ummm...can I ask just exactly what "snarky" is?...

snark...wasn't that Lion-O's friend in "Thundercats"...

I think that was Snarf.

Snarky refers to a sarcastic, cynical, blunt sort or attitude.

Just to be serious for a second: Because the Word of God is so precious, and must be taught in truth and purity, I always like my Bible study leaders to lead, teach, and ask questions after the verse has been expounded- which avoids this all-too-familiar scenario.

I find everyone appreciates it more, and the leaders have to study hard too. It's all good.

I can relate to that so well!

At my bible study we use these books which have set questions in it and we never get deep enough. Also there is too much socialising.

Plus, we use the NIV (which is okay) but a lot of the psalm readings are taken from "the message" which is a translation paraphrase I have grown to loathe.

I want some hard-core theologolising!
I want to actually discuss stuff, get to the very inner heart of it, prise open the valves and Disect it word for word, syllable for syllable, meaning for meaning!

I'm sick of skimming over the surface. Also in my bible study we are looking at the verses in less depth than I go in my private study.

So if you want to come to my new bible study class bring lots of incense, candles, cake and drink (preferoubly wine) and dress comfortably because you would be in for some hard-core discussion!:)

...

Actually in the youth groups I have visited it was more like this.

"Hey guys, stop playing cards....."

"Wow, she's cute....."

"Lets watch a movie"

Ah Thundercats... Does anyone else think SOCA's (Serious Organised Crime Agency) new logo look distinctly like the Thundercats one? http://www.soca.gov.uk (http://www.soca.gov.uk/)
Anyway, I've experienced this quite a lot, especially in student small groups, where the leader is often quite reluctant to take any sort of "authority" over what's going on, as it's a group of his/her mates, etc.
However, I do know how difficult it is, having been a group leader myself, especially when not everyone is singing off the same sheet.

 Oh, can i come? I'll have to say after many years spent in those stereotypical bible studies described previously, I am very wary of the phrase-small group bible study. Overseas, I helped start a woman's spirituality group with a Welsh chaplin who formerly worked in a university in the UK. It was wonderfully diverse, provided thought-provoking discussions/good reads plus was a supportive fellowship. I have yet to find anything close to it here in the States.

See? This is a perfect example of what happens in some groups!
You start off with good intentions, but then it just turns into a discussion about Thundercats!

Heheh. Youth bible studies are either fluff with very little bible content, or a leader looking for a blatantly obvious answer and not being willing to listen to anything else, in my experience. :(

When I read it I was reminded of some of the bad Bible studies I'd been to as part of various College ministries.
