Shalom, All

I've noticed in the Messianic movement and in the Sacred Name movement there are a large number of opinions on what the Messiah's name is. I've also noticed that sometimes these opinions are stated rather strongly as well.

It seems as though the major difference is that "Yeshua" means "Salvation" and "Yahshua" (as well as "Yehoshua") means "YHWH is [my] Salvation". (If I am wrong, please correct me.)

What is the evidence that our Messiah was called one over the other?

In Messiah,

Daniel

Yahshua is a name fabricated by the Sacred Name movement in the US around 1930. Yeshua` is the late Hebrew and Aramaic form corresponding to the earlier Hebrew Yehoshua`. Yeshua`, yod-shin-vav-ayin sounds simular to the Hebrew word yeshu`ah, yod-shin-vav-ayin-he, that means salvation, but they are different words. Yehoshua` may mean YHWH is salvation, but if it does it is a contraction because shua` does not mean salvation. BDB offers the possibility that Yehoshua` means YHWH is opulence. Both Yeshua` and Yehoshua` are transliterated as Iesous, iota-eta-sigma-omicron-upsilon-sigma in the Greek translation of the Tanakh (LXX). Iesous is used in the Greek NT for the Messiah's name.

Shalom, Shmuel, thanks for the informative post!

I take it, then, that there is no reason to favor "Yeshua" over "Yehoshua", other than if Yeshua was the contemporary form of Yehoshua, then the Messiah was likely called Yeshua rather then Yehoshua?

In Messiah,

Daniel
