Shlooooom!

I have a question that has made me think for years! How did the Jews in ancient time pray? What I mean is in what position did they sit/lay? Could someone please describe this to me. I would most appreciate it!

God bless

Shalom, A4C

From my personal studies in scripture, I have seen many examples (as I'm sure you have as well) of positions in prayer. I do know that whenever the law was read to the people they all stood for the duration of the reading even if it took all day. This showed respect. I am sure prayer was just as reverent. Didn't Solomon lay prostrate before God? I also know of where Daniel prayed three times a day in front of his window overlooking the city. Either way I'm sure it was done reverently. Of course the Israelites also had a different way to communicate to God with His guidance of the pillar of fire by night and cloud by day!

Thank you for your time pray!

If you look in the Book "Finger print of God" by Grant Jeffereys next time, in the middle of the book you will see a picture of a small artifact that shows a Jew praying while he is on his knees with his hands on his lap. I found the pic sooo interesting since it resembled the Muslim prayer as well. Thats why Im asking...And what does it mean to lay prostrate? Could you help me with that. Thanx

Hey there, a4c!
I'd love to check out that book - sounds beautiful.
BTW, to lay prostrate means to lay flat on the ground facing down with your arms extended. It is a sign of total submission to God.
Also, on a side note - Jewish people pray with prayer shawls. Have you seen these? These are wrapped around the man's shoulders and they show submission to God. When the Aaronic benediction is announced over a Jewish congregation, the mans prayer shawl encompasses his entire family. A beautiful thing, really.
