Did/do any of you know Matthew & Mary Winkler - the preacher & wife from the 4th Street Church of Christ in Selmer, TN?

A very tragic situation indeed...

Was that a Restoration Movement church? "Church of Christ" isn't copyrighted, and anyone is free to organize a congregation and call it "XXXXX Church of Christ."

Well... it's a Church of Christ - and the pictures of the inside of the sanctuary (that I've been seeing on TV) shows no organ or piano. I'm assuming it's an acappella church.

I know there's quite a few non-instrumental CoC folks here. Just wondering...

Yes, they attended and worked for an acapella Church of Christ.

No - I did not know them. That's a horribly tragic thing to happen ...

But I believe good might come from it. I imagine these folks were at every single church gathering there was, and I imagine that a lot of folks came up to them and asked, "How are you doing today?"

And I imagine the answer was always, "Fine. Just fine." ... but it wasn't just fine.

Hearing this story makes me wonder how fearful most of us are when it comes to being transparent ... and how Satan uses that fear to kill us - sometimes literally.

I read that his parents (his father is a minister and dean of the CoC college that he went to) immediately went to her and hugged her, told her that they loved her, and told her that they forgave her.

I pray that whatever other publicity comes out of this, that people tell this story over and over again - this wonderful story of forgiveness.

Horrible publicity.

Instead of asking a CoC minister about the Church of Christ, they had a Baptist guy come on CNN and call us a cult.

Rubel Shelly responded, but he was constantly cut off by the CNN interviewer Nancy Grace. Ridiculous.

Wes,

They later had BOB JONES come on and confirm that CoC is a "LEGITIMATE NATIONAL DENOMINATION"...I would have vast differences with them personally...couldn't personally call it a cult in any way....just a denomination who has doctrines that I personally don't subscribe to because they aren't biblical...beliefs about salvation in particular...redeemed baptismal waters..."

So...the CoC smear has now been upgraded from Cult to "Legitimate National Denomination with Flaws"

At least he knew the difference between the CoC and the ICoC.

No, I did not know them. My mom told me that they hAd been coC when I went to visit. Dolly Pardon was coC, and a number of other famous peple were, at least at one point. My mom gets all this info on who is coC somewhere. I wish Icould remember who the other famous person who she recently told me was coC was...

It is very sad about the Winklers. This is really gonna damage their kids. I wonder why she did it...

Its CNN, the Communist News Network...No surprise there. I've heard this cult smear before...It's always so pleasant to hear again though. (that was sarcasm).

Hmmm. Kenneth Starr (the man who prosecuted Bill Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky scandal), Max Lucado (probably the most influential Christian writer alive today - although most conservative CoC members would say he's not CoC anymore), Fred McGriff (famous baseball player who hit nearly 500 homeruns and who I used to go to church with in Florida), and Weird Al Yankovich (whose father was a CoC minister - Al attends the Hollywood Church of Christ in Hollywood, CA, and appears on VH1 quite a bit) are a few names that come to mind.

I wonder if they are related to the Winklers who preached the gospel to me in (tandem with my sister) and ultimately baptized me at a CoC in Round Rock, TX. I don't know what happened but I hope and pray God's goodness comes from the situation.
