Do you believe in Literal Spirits called Demons?

Someone said that most Anglicans do not and I am trying to test the validity of that statement.

I personally do, but then again I am of a more conservative mindset.

You won't get a wide enough pool here, Cola

Yes, but they can't separate us from the love of God.

The Church of England most definitely believes in the existance of demons, and most dioceses will have a deliverance ministry.

From memory, a house blessing, which is a fairly common practice, is basically the casting out of evil spirits from each room.

I'm going to say no to "literal demons" but there is evil...I've still got many questions,... and absence of God?, a making of self as God?....

Yes, I agree.

(Sorry for replying to this but I actually feel more Anglican than anything else at the moment. I went to an Anglican school and I really do love the Anglican church.)

there is far to much evidence in both Scripture and Tradition that affirms the existence of demons. this plus the simple fact that I have known priests who have done exorcisms.

I think I heard somewhere that some of the people who were thought to have been possessed in the scriptures, were actually having epileptic fits.

Can epilepsy allow people to see into the future? Evidently demonic power can because Paul got thrown into prison due to casting out a demon which could tell fortunes... see Acts.

a second-hand notion does not trump the testimony of Scripture

I am the one that suggested to Cola that most Anglicans did not believe in literal demons. I based this upon a poll I read about 5 years ago. The poll could not represent Anglicanism worldwide as it was a regional poll. (the U.S.) I am sure that they only polled ECUSA. I am surprised that so many have responded affirmatively. I wonder if anything more recent has been conducted. Would anyone know?

Make no mistake I certainly believe they exist. I just didn't think that most Anglicans did. (again a poll I read)

I completely understand. i would also distinguish between teachings of the Church, and beliefs of the laity.
