Is it difficult to be a Christian?

jayebrownlee
25th November 2002, 09:52 AM
I didn't know what to put here, as it is easy in some respects and then in others it is hard. It is easy in that it is by grace we are saved and therefore we don't really need to do anything, but on the other hand there are lots of things that we SHOULD do and they can be difficult.

Also my opinion is coloured by the fact that I live in a western society, I imagine that if you asked someone who lived in an arab country the same question that there opinion may not neccesarily be different, but there thinking behind it may be completely different.

I also have to think about the fact that I find it easy to be a Christian just now, as I am surrounded by other Christians, where as this time 2 years ago when I had no real Christian friends, I found it so hard to be a Christian that I left my faith behind.

This question has so many possible answers, depending on the situation you are in.

Ah well

Your sister inm Christ

The choice to follow Jesus is easy.

The struggle with ego and natural man is difficult.

But MORE THAN WORTH THE COST.

The blessings.... when you count these, there is no cost to follow Christ !

It is hard to be a Christian, to work toward Christ-likeness, to not ruin your witness, to be willing to give your testimony to others, to live in a peculiar way, but it is made easier by constantly looking to God to help you. There have been many times that I thought I couldn't do it anymore and called out to the Lord for help and He sent the help I needed!

It is if you don't really know what you have faith in!

Q: It is difficult to have faith?

A: No, faith is a gift from God, we just need to maintain it once we get it.

What may be difficult for some is their Christian Walk, and this is usually because they try to hard to be Christ-like. You have to let the Spirit take over your life, give the Spirit the keys to your car, and enjoy the ride. Changed thinking leads to changed behavior.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind

in some ways it is easy for me...even when i wasnt a christian i still had 'christian' morals and such...that was never a problem...being sXe helped, ive never gone out getting drunk or stoned and sleeping around and such...so in the lifestyle...sure, its easy for me...

....as far as trusting God and keeping faith in him....its not easy at all...i have to keep reminding myself that God is real and actually does care about me....those are the things that dont come easy....its much easier to just believe that nothing happens for a reason.

It's not hard to me. I have my mom and dad to help me when I don't know something...and I have you guys...I'm pretty dependant on God which marks my independence, and announcing my Faith over various parts of the Internet or offline in reality comes easy to me. But, anyway, I'm bound to make a mistake sooner or later. :D :P

It's difficult in all aspects, but it becomes 10x easier when you have a close Christian friend to associate with. Jesus said where two or more are, there am I in the midst of them. When there are at least two persons, there is a Christian culture maintained between the two of them to counter the culture of the world around you.

It is easy to believe that Jesus died to pay for my sins.
But I voted difficult because the struggle to be on par with God's commandment, and to leas a life like Jesus is difficult.
There is why I am always resorting to asking God for forgiveness.
It is hard for me not to sin completely.
Thus, to me, a Christian walk is difficult.

It can be hard, yes. It takes hard work to maintain a relationship, and a relationship with God is the most important thing in life. Sometimes God allows us to go through trial and temptaions, but He also promised to never leave us or forsake us. I consider the alternative of life without Christ--and I choose Him.

If you are having inward difficulty being a Christian it is because you are struggling against the pull of your faith. Give it up. Give it all up to God and then you will know freedom and peace.

But the outward struggle that this world puts upon Christianity will never end. Do not expect acceptance from this world.

Still, we must give back better than we receive from others. We must LOVE.

I think it would be alot easier if the majority of people were walking, talking, practicing Christians. Oh and if temptation was removed. It's tough at times. I fail to be Christ like but I know that the Lord is always working with me, molding me and shaping me. I love the Lord and want to do good and I yearn to learn all about God.

As for the Christian walk, I believe the transition between Romans chapter 7 and 8 really answers the tuff question. Chapter 7 seems to speak of the carnal minded that tends to cause tribulations in their Christian walk where as Chapter 8 shows the remedy; being a spirit filled life focused on the mind of the spirit.

Romans 7:18-20 (RSV) 18For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin which dwells within me.

Then he goes on to plea: Romans 7:24 (RSV) 24Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

Yet notice the transition with Romans Chapter 8 and what he points out as the focus point of the spiritual walk: Romans 8:10-11 (RSV) 10But if Christ is in you, although your bodies are dead because of sin, your spirits are alive because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit which dwells in you.

Now with the spirit indwelling our lives we become empowered for the battle against our old carnal ways: Romans 8:26-28 (RSV) 26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with sighs too deep for words. 27And he who searches the hearts of men knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

Thus through the working of the Spirit we are more than conquerors and have the power to reach our goal: Romans 8:35-37 (RSV) 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36As it is written,
"For thy sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

So much more I’ve left out but the point is that if the Spirit of God indwells you than look to God for intercession and spiritual power to overcome the things of this world for he has promised to do so. This does not mean that life around you will become tranquil but that your inner self will have true peace no matter the circumstances of our daily grind with the world.

Peace

It's difficult if you try to do it in your own strength and ability. But if you use the strength and power of God, it is not difficult. Jesus said His yoke was easy and His burden is light. He will give us rest. We are renewed, refreshed and strengthened each and every day.

God is loving. God is fair. God gave man the gift of free will (choice).

Men takes away from other men. God does not.
Men are not fair. God is fair.
Men impose restrictions on other men. God does not.
Men deny the free will/choice of other men. God does not.

Although the decision to be christian and follow Jesus is easy. the trouble comes in trying to get over the flesh, and the worldly desires...

I live in a University dorm sorrounded mainly by non-christian, so there are a lot of temptations and struggles in my life, but so far i'm surviving and keeping my faith. Fortunately there is a bible study group coming together in the residence now so all looks good for the future.

It depends on your reasoning for being a christain. If it is for going to heaven, then it might be difficult to act like a christian with our human nautures. If we are christians because we sincerly love God, then the actions just fall into place. If you're really in love with someone and you have an annoying habit to change, it's pretty easy. If you're with somebody just to be popular or get the physical side of the relationship, it's not as easy.

Instead of trying to hold onto faith, let yourself be held by the power and overwhelming integrity of the Word:

He said Jesus is Lord, so He is.

You cannot help but believe Jesus is Lord because God said He is and God cannot lie.

It is no longer a matter of trying to hold on to truths like this... it is almost like you can no longer escape them. They hold you in the net of salvation from which you cannot be loosed.

Once you have the revelation... it is over.

Is Christianity hard?...well I think literally no...but it depends on the person...for instance, what makes studying for a school exam so hard for people?...Some procrastinate, others find it hard to sit still, others think its a waste of time..while others like doing it, or know they have to...kinda bad analogy...but what im getting at I guess...is that we put priorities in different orders, we make certain things control our actions, and in the end we have to ask ourselves whom do we really serve?..Not to say that its as balck and white as "youre either a satanist or a christian"...but how much dow edie to uor spirits?... Christianity is not boring because we serve a God whose creativity and wisdom is infathomable...christianity is no more boring tahn it is hard because we serve a God who's strength surpasses alll that we can cognitively understand. WHat holds us back is our flesh. Its not hard...or shouldnt be hard to do the commands that God has for us because he commmands us to love one another, to respect one another...perhaps it all boils down to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you"...and as many of us know...not everyone abides by taht ...so living amongst people who have backwards values can be difficult..but we as Chrsitians should look at these "difficulties"..not as burdens, but as challenges, as potential triumphs, because we are to be the salt of the earth..preserving the good in every situation.....

Enter through the narrow gate.  For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.  But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it. Matthew 7:13-14

What are your thoughts on this verse?  Can it mean that Christianity is 'suppose' to be difficult/challenging?

I think it it hard to stop doing some of the thing you use to do before being a Christian. Like your music, movies you watch, and friends you have around. It is also hard to do the things God have you to do becuase Satan is always around telling you lies like your no good or why would God love you? You just have to keep your faith and pray to God to get you threw the hard times.

I thought I better explain my answer. Beginning a Christian as in becoming one hard no. Is living a life as a Christian easy, no. Are you going to have a "cake" life because you are one of God's children, no. Look at the life Jesus had to live. He's life was no easy and he was God's one and only son.

Now I've come to a point in my life where I want to believe so badly, but too many christians are too closed minded to my lifestyle and to my thoughts and that drives me insane!

So I find it very hard to have a strong faith when you aren't even accepted by many of your own "kind" if you will...

Forget about people who bother you. It's not important that you believe in them, rather that you believe and accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour. It won't matter what you've done in the past, Jesus will accept you and forgive your sins. Read your Bible and start going to church. You don't have to reveal your past to men. It will be Jesus that gives you forgiveness. If you repent and put your past behind you, maybe God has future work for you to help people like you are now. If you accept Christ and say that you were once a pagan, all of God's children were once lost and did many things that were wrong and sin. Many did much worse. A dear friend murdered someone when he was a young man. He spent 18 years in prison and became a Christian in prison. He spent the rest of his life in prison ministry, and I'm positive he is in heaven now. Many folks had a hard time respecting him when he was lost and a murderer.

Spend some quiet time every day with your Bible and see if a door opens. Jesus is The Way, The Truth, and The Life.

It's hard to be a Christian... It's hard to know the whole understanding of Grace and truth- because our human minds cannot comprehend it. But by faith God makes it clear. Living in the world is hard too. God did not make his way easy. I think God puts many turns and curves in our road to help us gain and understand him and faith.

Speaking from my own experience, I made it hard to live the christian life, until I gave up all things, it was hard. Once I did, it seemed easier, because I kknow where my help comes form. Life can get hard and stressful, but praying, fasting and believing that a change will come makes me smile EVERYDAY!

SUNSTONE

Its way easy!
I remember one night, a nonbeliever said being a Christian is harder than not being one(as if he would know). I started to agree with him, then I really thought about it.

We have a creator that loves and guides us. Nonbelievers don't.

We know where we're going when we die. Nonbelievers don't.

We have the awesome revelations from God. They don't have anything close to that.

A hard week, is easily melted away with worship, and releases are fustrations, putting us back into proper perspective. They have drugs, and if you think thats easier, then be my guest have at em, Ill be praying. :)

The main thing that people think is the difference is they sin when ever they want. Well a believer can do just that, because we are free in Jesus, but everyone has heard it before "sin will take you farther than you want to go."
Sin is what makes life hard, and your heart hard.

No, not when you realize that it is IMPOSSIBLE to live a CVhristian life in this sinful flesh. Only Christ can do the work of Christ through us. When we try to do the work of Christ on our own, we grow weary.

G.K. Chesterton said, "The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried." People assume it is difficult because too often it is tried under our own power, and not left in the hands of God to work through us.

We are mearly vessels. We aren't supposed to "DO"anything except be USED by God for His will.

Jesus never said being a christian was going to be easy, becoming a christian doesn't mean we get to forego the unpleasantries of this world. And sometimes its harder to be a christian than a non-christian, easy at times to envy their lifestyle. But the comforting thing about having faith in Christ and a living relationship with him is that you know that ultimately you're going to meet your saviour, ultimately you will stand at the gates to heaven and hear "well done my good and faithful servant". I mean how reassurring and inspiring is that! So i didn't know what to vote for in this poll so i went with not sure (bit of a cop out i know)

Cherberrie
14th August 2003, 02:45 AM
I voted "unsure", because I think, like others, that it can be hard at times, easier at others to be a Christian. There are valleys when we feel so far away from God, that everything is messed up. When you hit the top of the mountain though, there is peace and clarity, and it is so worth the bad times.

Very difficult. Fighting daily against things you know you shouldn't do/say/feel. Having to admit to God that you know you were wrong. That'd do just about anyone in.

The christian life is difficult, but the grace of God is sufficient to meet our every need if we can trust the Lord that much.Id say its a growing experience that gets better as we understand and do it Gods way. :D

Being a Christian in this evil world is hard but I like it. I become a better person because of it and I like serving the good Lord. There are times when I don't know how to witness to someone and that can be really hard sometimes but I just try my best.:)

I dont think its hard to be a christian person, but i do think its hard to deal with the non christian ppl around you! Just my opinon! I agree, and I also think it is very hard to witness to those who dont want to hear you at all, and wont open up their hearts to change and a new life. I also think its hard, when you're down and you feel alone.

I don't think it is particularly hard to be a Christian in the USA. We have a lot of freedom here. Not as much as we used to, but we are still free to be Christian.

Is it difficult to be a Christian?
i voted not sure because beleiving in god is not hard. Living a life of faith dedicated to God thats hard. :)

I love Jesus with all my heart, he saved me from myself.

to be able to control what goes into your mind is hard. mind-battling is what I called it. to be able to walk with Him faithfully and to constantly "fighting" with self is even harder.

I don't think Christianity is too hard, at least not for me.
I came from a Jewish family, and if you want to see something which is really diffucult - this is the thing. I don't think that also in the moral aspect it's hard, since whenever you find the truth within you and you understand it, it's so much easy to follow it....as long as you believe in Christ

The Christian life is simple yet impossible. Its simple in that all we have to do is to accept Christ and we are saved, yet without God it is an impossible to for us to do it on our own, that doesnt really answer the Question but its a statement non-the-less. To answer the question, dificult? yes. too dificult? no. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Also I know that God works for the good of those who love Him. I have faith that even tho its hard, its all going toward something eternal. I'll say this, it gets harder and easier as you go along as ive learned.

I believe it is impossible to be the kind of christian that the Bible talks about and live by following all the commandments--because thats being perfect. but i do not believe that our religion is to hard to follow. If it was than nobody would follow it. Also, even Paul said that he "stumbled" sometimes but, he knew God was merciful and would forgive him.

Is it difficult to be a Christian?&

Yes, being a Christian is very difficult. But it is the only rewarding path, and I cannot imagine living my life without Jesus. He is my EVERYTHING. Without Him, I am nothing, and if I weren't a Christian, there would be so many more things that I would have to deal with, that I don't now because of God's grace.

the hardest part about christianity is christians. Every where i go, i have to defend my faith in God, not my religion but my faith in God. I cant defend christianity anymore, i dont understand it. However, i am a christian.

Learning about Christianity is not difficult, but being a christian (exception for lukewarm type) is very very difficult. Especially true for ppl like me who is not born in a Christian family and always surrounded by friends who uphold other religions...every time when being with them, I feel being judged.

When a Christian considers the price paid for his/her salvation, how can following Christ be deemed difficult? For sure there are challenges in maintaining faithfulness, but there is no greater joy and nothing more rewarding than walking with the Lord. As Jesus said: His yoke is easy, and His burden, light.

This is a 2 part answer.
"Becoming' a Christian isn't, it's a work of God in the elect's heart (Lydia in Acts 16:14, me)
Living like one is so very difficult God through Paul said 'put your own desires to death', Rom.6, 12:1-3, etc. 'You have been crucified with Christ', Gal 2:20, & the famous, frustratingly, agonizing dilemna of me & Paul in Romans 7, thank you God for the death of Christ & the sanctification of the Spirit!

In the very beginning of coming a Christian it is very hard b/c Satan know's how vulnerable you are, being a christian becomes easier when you find a way to incorporate God into everything you do. When you are getting really close to God, Satan again hops along and try and take you but that is when you know you are getting stronger in your faith.

Compared to how hard my life was before this is a breeze! knowing that there is a lovely father there to help you through whatever comes my way , really puts me at ease. Being a Christian is at times very difficult. It requires great sacrifice. I have lost close relations with my family because I am Christian and they are not. Our children are not allowed to do certain things, etc. Much is required of Christians and sometimes I find my self agonizing over it. I have caught myself in prayer asking God "Why must I do this?" Even our Lord agonized over his approaching death when he prayed in the Garden. Are we asked any less? However, I will say more often than not my reward for following Christ is greater than I could have imagined. It has been worth it.

It is hard to be a christian, but jesus never said it was going to be easy. Now that I am saved and have been for a year and half. People treat me different including my parents. My mom actually used the word "fanatic" on me...when I think of that word I think of people killing others saying jesus told them to...but if just loving jesus and wanting to following his ways is being a fanatic I guess I am one. When my husband and I got saved we threw out all our rock cds, bad dvds, we have cut out some of our t.v. watching...we read our bible more...because we decided to get rid of one of t.vs and only have one...that classifies us as wierd in our family...I have also got alot of grief about not wanting to teach our children of santa claus and the easter bunny or celebrate halloween...does anyone else out there agree with this? christmas is for jesus' birth to celebrate it...easter is to celebrate when he died for us and when he risen for us... call me crazy but I dont remember peter cotton tail being on that cross for us.

It certainly can be tough fighting the enemy that is the devil and his evil schemes, but for me it's not tough enough to give up completely. The prize and assurance of eternal life is just too great and comforting for me to want to give up. The marathon that is the Christian walk is never a completely pain free experience, but to know that Jesus has won the ultimate victory for us gives me the strength and trust in God's purposes to carry on.

I believe that to be a CHRISTIAN is to be CHRIST-like...which by our sinful nature is an impossibility when you consider the magnitude of SIN (thoughts, speech, actions, what we look at, ect-ect). But that's exactly why we need CHRIST after all isn't it? We make our walk with CHRIST "hard" by our lack or wavering submission to HIS will. So for me personally, I must say that being a Christian is hard when "I" make it hard.

Christianity is only hard when your friends are non-Christians and when you want to talk about God they don't like it. Being a Christian is easy because the bible reading, prayer and going to church is easy but the witnessing is hard because there is this big stereotype on Christians.

Christianity is harder for some,as well as easier for some.It also depends on our natural character traits. If we are grateful and loving, and have learned self discipline,we soon find, that our Father in Heaven rewards every good or kind deed generously. We become even more grateful and loving to our families, our friends,or workmates, because we soon find that they are becoming kinder and more considerate to us.To love God becomes more easy, because God shows His Love for us more and more often. But if one is by nature a reserved,or even a bit cool,I do admit it is harder to show love, and we will find people will treat us as we treat people. But since God knows our hearts,Christianity will become easier too. That is what I found.Of course there are always exceptions.Greetings,Yours Emmy.

It is very difficult being a Christian. It's not easy to deal with sin, to fight the devil back with all his temptations and lies, to be a Christian in a totally unChristian world.

There is much peace being a Christian, but I don't find it easy. I feel very blessed to be a Christian, no matter how hard it can be at times! I am very blessed by the Lord in many ways!

I agree with you 100 % (Can I call you Trix for short?). It is supposed to be hard, but I think that is, so we can prove Christ's strngth, adn glorify him, and so that we need to rely on him. Also I think it would be kinda boring if it wasn't hard. Often times, I find myself compromising, either with sin & not saying things about Christ, that I feel the Holy Spirit urged my to say (with his words in my mouth), then I feel ashamed, and really bad, I am not letting God use my like he should be able to. But then again, when times are hard, we have God on our side. I'd much rather face life's struggle's with God than without him.

continuing to follow the straight and narrow is very difficult. Resisting the temptation to sin is hard, and everyone struggles with it, although there is more than that to being a christian. Teaching others the Word of God is difficult. We fear imbarassment or rejection or hate. All and all it is not an easy ride, but the reward is worth it.

To me, the hard part of being a Christian is in dying to self. After living in sin for so long, it is hard to get over many of the unconscious things we do that are self serving. Another thing that is hard is dealing with non-believers who do not understand or do not want to understand. Yet another thing that is hard is dealing with the doctrinalism that is rampant throughout Christendom.

I do believe however that this is hard for MAN, not God, and as long as we put our faith and trust in him, these things become easier as we grow in the Lord.

At some point in a Christian's life... it will be hard.

I feel it also depends on where you are, and the circumstances around you. I feel blessed to live in the U.S.A. Although the ACLU and other secular organizations are attacking Christianity, I still have most of my religious freedoms.

Frankly, I don't see how it is possible for any human to be a Christian, Christ-like. We need the Holy Spirit to live our lives for God. When I do it on my own, in my own power, I get to the point where I feel like Paul when he said "Oh wretched man that I am", but when I listen to the leading of the Spirit, I see the right choices and have the desire to make those choices. But, maybe I'm missing the gyst of the poll.

i think itīs hard to be a christian, in some ways. but god told us never that the way and live with hím would be easy and just fun. itīs the small path. but thatīs ok - cause he is there for us, gives as strength, love and grace. and we arenīt able anymore to believe he carries us through. we just have to hang on to him. so i think, live would be much harder if we wouldnīt have christ, and therefore hope. again and again. until he comes back.

Of course it's not hard to become a Christian, but being a Christian is a different story...
We have the trouble with Satan trying constantly trying to divide our attention from the Lord. Of course then there is the that whole I am still human and have "desires" thing. So yes I would say at times it is hard. But if we pray continually 1Thes. 5:13, Seek God's word in daily Bible reading and do His will, we will find that things although difficult are easier to manage. Psalm 34:19. "A righteous man may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all." Just remember we have someone who has been through it all and LIVED to tell about it. That someone is Jesus!

It depends on whether you mean to be a perfect Christian, as indeep says. It is impossible to be a perfect christian, but to just be "a christian" is not necessarily difficult, but perhaps if it is more difficult, this shows that we are pushing ourselves. I think I had an "easy" christian-ish life for too long.

God never promised living the Christian life would be easy, but the rewards here on this earth and in Heaven to come make the price well worth it. I don't have to bumble through life wondering what my purpose is, and I know where I'm headed after this life. Hard? Hard?! You Christians have it the easiest! Your religion is the most popular, either to love or hate. All medias revolve around you. It really depends.

If "Christianity" is showing up for church on Sunday morning, singing songs without enthusiasm and participating in the service in the most minimal way, and then leaving one's faith at the church door before leaving the church for lunch -- then yes, Christianity can be quite easy (and almost completely unfulfilling).

If "Christianity" is trying to "stay in good with God" by following ALL of the laws and rules in both the Old and New Testaments, then Christianity can be excruciatingly difficult (and equally unfulfilling -- and it can also make one exceedingly bitter and punitively judgmental).

If "Christianity" is accepting God's gift of salvation by grace, through faith in Jesus Christ; and earnestly trying to follow Jesus through actions truly based in love for God and love for one's neighbor -- then Christianity may not be "easy" but there is always "grace sufficient for every need" (and it will be a very fulfilling way to live).

I'll admit I didn't read many of the posts, but wanted to add my two cents. I don't find it hard to believe in God or Christ but what's hard is walking the walk sometimes. I have to constantly check myself when I'm thinking about saying things or doing/not doing things that may not be Christ-like. I don't always succeed, but that's life! = )

 Hello, Friends!

I think of it like this: when I had a boyfriend and we didn't talk for a long time, the relationship became weak. With my husband, when he doesn't talk to me, the relationship feels useless.

Same with God. If the only time I reference my Christianity is in a poll, or when a Christian friend asks how it's going, or if I decide I'll try another church, then I am really not that different than if I didn't know God at all.

I've read the Bible since I was really young, and even if it doesn't make sense at first, eventually it kind of "sinks in" -- that's if you keep reading and reading and study and work it out.

Prayer, however, was a completely different matter; I couldn't keep my mind on "talking" to God. Reading Peretti's book This Present Darkness helped me see how necessary prayer is. I "see" the enemy now, rather than looking just at people and events. I talk to God every chance I get, in the car, the shower, my kitchen -- any place I am alone. I talk aloud, and then I'm silent, to listen. It's amazing how your "intuition" provides answers for you! -- that is, God answers. I find I don't need Eastern-type "meditation" because I meditate upon God and His word, as we're told to do in Scripture.

With fundamentalist Islam at our front door, I think it will really become hard to remain strong in our faith. In part, I think this is because our Western society bombards us with horrific sins and actively fights against "right-wing Christian wackos" -- really! I hear that term more every day, typically from the entertainment industry, among the very worst at pushing licentious behaviours and immorality and low ethical standards. So when something comes along that says, "Look, you aren't like these losers. You can be clean and close to Allah," we see that our depravity is great, and we long for purity.

Have you seen the film/musical "Cabaret"? It reveals outside the research literature what made Germany ripe for Hitler: Hitler's regime was founded upon Germany's sense of its own depravity and its need for a "decent" role model, one that would remind them that they didn't have to be at the bottom of the moral heap.

Our feelings that it's hard to be Christian are, for the most part, superficial. Is it bad to go to a dance? Wrong to wear tight clothes? Sinful to talk with vulgarity, obscenity? Wrong not to go to church three times a week? Believe me, that's small stuff.

I lift you up to the God of all gods, the Creator, the Name above all names, the Almighty, the Rock of our salvation, God of the mountains from whence cometh our help, the Holy one, the Lamb -- is it so hard to approach Him through Christ? Not so long as my heart and mind remain in me.

From a New Testament benediction: "May the Lord of peace BE your peace, at all times and in every way."
 Constance

Christianity-following Christ is hard only if you are in doubt and you don't hold to the truth. If you are willing to die for Christ-God, then it won't be hard following Christ. Ask yourself if you are willing to stand up for the truth? Ask yourself if you are more willing to offend the world than to offend God? Question your faith?

I found that it was harder when I first became a Christian than it is now do to the lifestyle change. For example, I would be confronted by an obstacle and would stop and think "Should I? No, I can't do that." But now will just walk around it without a second thought.

Then again, as a Christian I am confronted by things that I can't just walk around without a second thought. When this happens it's up to me to stay strong, to pray, to trust in God. My faith is really tested.

So, I wouldn't say it's too hard to be a Christian, rather, it's hard at times to be a Christian.

It is easy until others try to make it difficult for you. They seem to know HOW to try the patience, HOW to push the right buttons to get you angry, and certainly TRY to do it until they can succeed. Sometimes, you just have to be aware of their tactics to repel their attempts. ;)

ConstanceB
4th March 2005, 02:37 AM
Your middle paragraph touches me. I don't know what your lifestyle is, or your thoughts, but trust me: each of us comes under fire from the devil through people of all kinds.

I want to recommend that you read the Book of Hosea. Talk about an outsider! God told him to marry a prostitute, and required that every time she left, turning her back on his love and returning to her old lifestyle, Hosea was to find her and bring her back into the circle of his protection and love. This is a mirror of the story of God's love: It does not matter to Him how low we are. He loves us completely and forever.

Consider this: The message in Hosea is not just for you (the "outsider" by your own confession), but for those Christians who seem self-righteous, too. He loves them despite their sin, just as He loves you and me: "The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. As far as the East is from the West, that's how far He has removed our transgressions from us."

I propose that the tight-lipped Christians you reference are not the enemy. People are frail -- and indeed, Scripture tells us that God knows how weak we are, "like the grass that passes away". The enemy of our walk with God is just that: the Enemy. Satan pulls our attention away from God and points to our own sins, to insults by others, and to the world and its glittery, slick fingers. Don't be fooled! God is our Rock and our Salvation, and Christ is our model -- not the person all dressed up on Sunday morning who pulls her coat away as she passes so she doesn't touch our uncleanness.

When you find yourself down on Christians who fall short of God's call, ask forgiveness for their weaknesses as well as for your own. Ask for God to send his warrior angels to defeat the Enemy, and for his ministering angels to tend to your damaged spirit.

May God bless you as you walk with Him.

I was raised christian, but spent the past 6 years walking a line between pagan and nothing at all. I gave up on caring.

Now I've come to a point in my life where I want to believe so badly, but too many christians are too closed minded to my lifestyle and to my thoughts and that drives me insane!

So I find it very hard to have a strong faith when you aren't even accepted by many of your own "kind" if you will...

Just some food for thought:idea:

Of course it's not. The only thing required for me to "be a christian" is the finalization of John 3:16. It's not because of what you did, or do, It's solely because of Him and what He did. It's very easy to get lost in the study of wood chips when standing in the forest. Our feelings and perspectives are not the standard by which He is judged, yet we sometimes do. His is the standard by which we are judged, and He has more than pardoned us - we have been reprieved. The meaning, and effect of His Grace. I used to think that being a Christian was difficult, then I realized that I wasn't really following Him - I was trying to lead. Being a Christian is the simple state of being His child and loving Him. If you're refering to the bearing and profundity of fruit, yeah, we affect His ability to bless our actions, thoughts, and words. That's our struggle against the "old man", and a struggle it is. But, whether I run the race, or drag on, I am no less His - no less "Christian". And, He is no less mine.

I'm curious. Does anyone read other peoples' comments before making their own? I understand this wonderful vehicle that we all enjoy and use, but I am sometimes appalled at the statements made that are based upon "feelings", and justified with a bible verse either taken out of context or misapplied. I refer to no one in particular and no opinion in particular. Nonetheless, they are abundantly there. What seems to be apparent is the lack of personal time reading the Word, and quite time alone with Him- just talking. I think in these times we will see a great "awakening" within the Church. We all, obviously, need to see the nature of God in our own hearts. And, it will be placed there in spite of ourselves, solely because of Him. The only thing I can see that is based upon us is fruit. Everything else is based upon Him, or have I missed something.

There's no easy way to lives as a christian... infact, we should value wat we have in Jesus Christ... being a christian has a responsibility to God coz we are here on earth bcoz we have a purpose.. and it's might easy for u to backslided but, once u do that, u gonna have a hard times in life. As a Christian, our part is to obey God words.. God will have test on us on earth just to see how close are we with him...
Jesus died on the cross 4 our sins... it's not easy... bcoz God love us, He gave his son... that's not easy...
To deny Jesus when He's in trouble...it's not easy... to forgive someone that's sin against us....it's not easy..infact...everything that's in the world is not easy... so, all we need to do is to stand wit God and pray... that's our weapon... Devil hates when we pray coz that's gonna bring us closer to our Father in heaven...
And u will understand and be able to see how great is our God...

It is hard!!!!!!:cry::cry::cry:Most of us can quote the KJV of Matthew 11:28,29,30 with little assistance. For a little more clarification, here's the Amplified: 28) Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] 29) Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. [Jer. 6:16.] 30) For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good--not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne.
No, being a Christian is not hard. The "flesh", the "old man", the "world", the "race", is. But, these things are not "being a Christian". Semantics? I don't think so, because the holder's perspective directly results in effects on their lives and their fruit. Why else would He have stated otherwise so clearly. The reality of God is, sometimes, as simple as the difference between "knowing" and "believing". GBY

I used to have trouble forgiving. But the more I do it, the easier it gets. = )

I chose Yes, but I'm kind of on the fence. Believing in Christ is the easy part, just look all around us. :) But trying to live like Jesus every day can be hard. :)

yes it is hard but then we're trying to imitate Jesus i wouldn't expect it to ever be easy.temptations everywhere.

Difficult compared to what?
If you are talking about persecution. We have freedom to do what we please in the US, without threats of harm, though we may be ridiculed by those who are non Christian. A little ridicule isn't tough.
Now say if we lived in a country where Christians were perecuted then it would be a different story.
If we are talking about faith, then no since faith is a gift of God's grace and not a work of man.
If we are talking about sin, it's something we all stuggle with but we are forgiven as long as we repent.

Not through God's grace it is'nt. I admit there are times where we are tempted but God will never give us anything we can't handle.

It is difficult to be a christian, because christian means "Christ Like" and to try to be and act as christ would at all times is very hard. But God ask for us to do our best. We are not perfect and he did not ask for us to be perfect. We all sin each and everyday

Yes but sometimes it is hard to do all things through christ, we are human so we do tend to fail.

"My yoke is easy, and my burden is light." To me, it is easy, but I didn't have to overcome addictions, or bad habits. However, there are times of trials, and those seem very hard at the time. God is faithful to help us through them all. :prayer:

Christianity is a long and narrow path, but you will be a better person because of it.:preach:

Well... I cannot say exactly. I am not a Christian, and I guess their are many rules to 'reach salvation'. But, I mean... I've heard people say "Well, I did something bad, but before I die I will accept Christ and then I will get into heaven".
But, not sure.

All you have to do is accept Jesus as the son of God and savior of humanity. That's all. It's not hard at all.

Nobody can convert you except you. When you are done with being a child in this great universe and giving in to every whim of your heart, you will question and some kind Christian will be there for you.

The reason that I said no and that being a Christian is hard is because all of the criticism and downputting remarks that we recieve for believing in God. In the area of Australia that I live in, there are many athiests who just have no respect for religion what-so-ever. I am lucky to have such a close Christian community to be with though, so our bond with God is harder to break. I won't let ANYBODY take me away from MY God!!

I belive being a christian is very hard in the world we live in. Thats why God sent His one and only only Son to die on the cross to forgive us everytime we fell. It is very hard but totally worth it in the end
