Who wants to go in on it?

That is cool! 83 acres of riverfront. I'll take an acre (a wise one please).

This made me laugh: "one of the last Wild and Scenic, undamned rivers in California"

What exactly do they mean by an undamned river? It was a sinful river, but it repented? :D

The only "damned river" I know about would have to be the River Styx.... :D

(in case anybody wants to be a wisenheimer, yes, I'm aware of river dams and so forth, I'm just making fun of the typo)

That'll be one more wiseacre for Matrona please. Just make sure it isn't next to the dammed highway!

Now what is a dammed highway? Route 666? :D

That looks pretty cool!

The only thing that throws me is that the Bridgeville font looks just like the font used by a local NW fast food chain called Burgerville!

A town full of Orthodox Christians? We would soon be labled "sin city." And I would be mayor.

(My uncle was once the town drunk. The town was New York!) Not really.

Good one, Matrona. Now, keep that good sense of humor, okay. ;)

That reminds me of the time when I was a child. In Richmond, California, there is this Catholic Church located on the Dam Road.

Really. And the Catholic Church tried to get the dam road renamed because people were making too many jokes about that Catholic Church.

St. Callistos Catholic Church is still located on San Pablo Dam Road as far as I know.:D

What is ironic is that they named the dam after St. Paul.

i would gladly take the job of town drunk.

We could change the name according the seasons...

Something along the lines of "Seitan City" during fasting seasons and "Margaritaville" during bright week. ;)

Hello fellow Kansan.

wasn't the town in California though? I thought I remembered pulling up a a map of it and finding that it wasn't that far from Fr. Seraphim Rose's tomb. But then again work has made everything a jumble in my mind of late.

BTW, which parish do you go to?

And you are totally right, I drive 2.5 hours one way to church. We really need many, many more churches.

Hi Joe :),

We are attending Holy Trinity in Overland Park. Actually, I am thirsty for a MONASTERY. Much prefer it over parish life . . .:sigh:

Well, the OCA Diocese of the Midwest has added piles of missions during Abp. +JOB's reign. However, not so much on the monastic front.

I've been to that church a few times. Lovely parish.

I go to St. Sophia's in Lawrence. I like it better for two reasons, 1. its only 2.5 hours away instead of 3.25 hours and 2. one word. Your guess, it starts with a Ch and ends with an air. ;)

Probably not right this second, not to be populated with monastics from the StL area...but any land that was given to the Church for that use would certainly eventually be used, and StL is kinda a nice central location for many in the midwest to go to, being the gateway to the west and all that....I know that area, and it's beautiful!!! It would be so amazing if we had more resources like that, or even something like Antiochian Village in the middle of the country...ahh, that would be nice.

Hey, I grew up going to HT-OP when it was still on the Russian Hill and Fr. Platko, memory eternal, was pastor. My dad's side of the family is from Pleasant Hill (by Blue Springs) and he first found Orthodoxy in the Greek church in KC. Whenever we visited Grandparents and aunts/uncles, we would go to HT. I also went to EOYC every summer! I know some of the older families there at HT, though I haven't been there in probably at least 5 years and maybe longer.

I'm in Tulsa, right below you, and agree we need something here in the center of the country. I saw that there is a Serbian mens monastery in south-west Missouri, but I don't know anything about it, do you?

There is some beautiful hilly land in NE OK, which I've dreamed about seeing a monastery established upon.

A monastery there would be nice! :prayer: It's a reasonable drive from Tulsa, so my family could visit occassionally, plus it is centrally located to serve many in the middle of the country.

No, I didn't know about the one in Missouri. Do you know the name?

Honestly, I believe that Oklahoma is one of the most beautiful states that I've driven through . . . A most perfect location for a monastery! I've been looking at land here to purchase for a monastery; however, finding a large sum of land can be difficult and expensive. Perhaps we can put our heads together . . . :groupray:

I only know that it is called Saint Pachomius Monastery, and is located in Greenfield, Missouri. I just looked it up, and it is Serbian.

Land in Oklahoma is fairly cheap, as I'm sure it must be in Kansas. I once found a listing at realtor.com for 120 acres in Jay, OK, which is beautiful, for around $100,000. I wish I could buy it, then donate it, but I owe Sallie Mae about that much, then maybe I can make plans to get land.

My sister and her family lived in San Francisco for a few years, so compared to the prices there, Bridgeville seems like a steal.

If you don't mind my asking what church do you go to downthere? I used to go to St. James in Owasso just to the north of Owasso.

Also the Monastary you mention is about 1.5 hours to the east of me. Never been there, but been meaning to one of these days. If anyone decides to go visiting, let me know and I'd be happy to tag along (and show you the roads the cops don't patrol as much).

I was received into Orthodoxy at Saint Antony Antiochian Orthodox Church on Holy Saturday 1995, so that is the parish I am still attending, although I've considered attending the new OCA mission in town, because I am drawn to Russian/Slavic practice and greater support of monasticism.

I've loved my experiences in ROCOR, but had been advised not to attend St. James parish in Owasso by other ROCOR members and a ROCOR priest. In fact, most of the ROCOR Orthodox in Tulsa do not attend that parish, choosing to visit St. Benedict in OKC when they can instead. (I love Vladika Anthony there!). Several friends of mine, who had been christmated into Orthodoxy through the Antiochian Archdiocese were told they needed to be re-baptized to commune in that parish, and were even told they had to wear white for 40 days, as if they had never been Orthodox at all. They were open to being baptized, but were injured by being treated as if they had no prior connection to the church at all. My feelings are that much of this was just a new priest developing pastoral skills, weighing the use of economia vs. canons in determining how individuals should be handled, and misunderstanding. Anyway, the Bishop stepped in and made things right, I think, but the hurt it caused still has left a mark.

I've heard Fr. Mark is a good man. I tend to lean more traditionalist practices, thinking we should weigh any changes to our praxis carefully, but also believe the more "modernist" jurisdication fully have grace, and in some ways better treat those who are sick with sin, by being more compassionate than some traditionalists can sometimes be. People are weak and sometimes need a gentle hand and sometimes need a kick in the bottom, knowing the difference is an art of good pastoral judgement.

Yes, I've been to a few services at Holy Trinity, and try not to miss their annual Greek Holiday festival. Fr. Bill, the priest there, is very knowledgeable. I used to go to a Wednesday Book Club meeting there when I was first coming to Orthodoxy in the mid-1990s. How long ago did you live in Bartlesville? I have an aunt who lives there.

I attend Saint Antony Antiochian church, which has had quite a few improvements made on it over the past couple years. Have you ever attended services at our parish? We have a nice new iconostasis and some new icons which are wonderful.

I lived in Bartlesville, og, it must be from about 1987-1990, roughly. Yeah, my little brother was born there in May 1990, and then we moved that summer. I have never been to any church but Holy Trinity in Tulsa. I dont seem to remember there being much of a choice of churches, at the time. I hear they have a few more, now.
