View Full Version : ok, ladies, tell me about your shoes!

This may sound like a very superficial question, but...What shoes do you wear to DL? I have discovered that all my "Sunday best" shoes are very uncomfortable, either with a high heel or a pointy toe. This Sunday, I ended up in my clogs, as these were the most comfortable shoes I own, beside jogging shoes. I see many women at my church in high heels, but I just can't do it. I've seen the older ladies in "sensible shoes";) but they are quite ugly. I've even seen some of the older ladies in black running shoes. Will I get used to standing for two hours in high heels? Should I just be on the look out for nice flats? What do you wear?

I saw your post and started laughing because I have the worse shoes! One of my friends commented to me that there are women who chose to wear shoes ... because they look good!
UGH!
I wear the most comfortable shoes I can find... generally old lady "sensible shoes" type things.
However, there are women in my parish who wear very nice dressy shoes to church ... not too high a heal... but fashionable.

I am "all Birkenstock all the time" kinda gal. Of course it's a bit easier to do this living in the South where we have sandal weather 9 months out of the year and there are some quite feminine and attractive Birkenstock sandal styles. But I have dress closed toe Birks, too.
I pretty much gave up tall heels after our first (who is 22 years old today!) was born.
Comfortable feet free the mind for worship! ;)

As soon as the weather is warm enough, it's Birkenstocks all the way.
If you wear any heels, make sure they are of the 'thicker' variety. I wear heels sometimes 1-1.5 inch high but the 1-1.5 inch wide too. Aerosoles and such. When we have services at the chapel (it's a lot colder than church and has stone floor) I wear my trusty old UGG boots. Most of the time though I wear almost floor length skirts (esp in the winter) so no one really knows what kind of shoes I wear. On Theophany I wore hiking boots since we were blessing a stream a little hike from the chapel.

Not sure about Russia, but it was high heels and point toes in England and America. Husband and I used to do American Revolutionary War reenactment. The link below are the shoes I used to wear for my portrayal as a camp follower. The officers' wives wore higher heels and pointier toed shoes.

Those shoes look very similar to the ones that men used to wear.
Men used to wear shoes like that to show off their calves in the tights and would oftenly pad them to make them look bigger^_^
I like the "Greatcoat" shown below.

I have cute flats, but I also have good quality heels with proper support. When heels have the kind of support you need (like in ballroom dancing heels) they are comfy to stand in for long times. I also take my shoes off whether they;re flats or heels, sometimes, but that's kosher in my church.

Boots or sandals. Always flat except if I'm going to a wedding then I break down and wear comfortable one inch heels...but my feet are not happy!
I have a rule. If I can't run from danger in my shoes, I shouldn't be wearing them.
I mean the boogy man can creep up anytime and am basically helpless in my toe-cramped three inch heals.
Well, I suppose I can take one shoe off and beat him over the head with it.

I wear stylish flats for DL, but I often have to bring my snow boots to change in and out of which is a pain. I have short, wide feet and have never found a pair of heels that fit properly. (Though I do have these really hot heels from BCBG that are shiny and wine-colored with the pointy toes... I find them worth the torture on occasion.)

I know what you're talking about :D ... Although it gets to be ridiculous when it's -25 C and the Russian ladies visiting Helsinki are literally shivering when they walk and their shoes can barely keep them standing up because of the slippery side walks. Anything for style (but it doesn't hurt to engage brain now and again). In the end they are always stylish no matter what.
It did get a bit annoying at the monastery when there was some Russian visitors with heels. A flock of clicking heels on granite floors just totally messed with my concentration during services.
I found a pair of nice looking ankle winter shoes from a Finnish designer (on sale) and they fit literally like a 'glove' on my feet. They look very nice, are warm and comfortable to stand in. And I should have bought a black pair too...

I wear low-heeled shoes or boots. I have it a little bit easier as our choir area is actually to the side of the altar on the extended raised area and is carpeted. The nave is hardwood right on top of concrete, and I don't know how anybody in high heels could stand for 2 hours on that!

Maybe we could all take our slippers to church. When we were there for the all night vigil last year on Holy Friday, most of us changed into sweat suits and slippers at 11 pm. It made the all night event much easier. (Of course we did sit when we were not doing the actual readings too, but it was such a long long long night.)

It's formaldehyde in nail polish that makes it unhealthy. There are several kinds of nail polishes that do not contain formaldehyde. Apparently some people retain more formaldehyde than others, and fortunately a lot of it does evaporate when you put it on... however, keep your area well ventilated. My nail lady just had a very healthy baby boy and she has definitely been around plenty of polish the past few years.

I used to work in an upscale spa, nail, and hair salon (can you believe I didnt even know what a pedicure was until then? I learned ALL ABOUT being a girl... lol). The more 'natural' polishes dont work as well so you have to keep up with a lot more touch ups. I should do my toes before it gets any harder to bend over with this growing belly! Anyways, I had to get out of the salon because all the chemicals were causing me problems, even though the front desk where I worked was seperate from the other areas. Headaches, swollen glands, rashes, lethargy... it got pretty nasty. Too bad since I made decent money... The products that bothered me the most were Aveda, which are supposed to be more natural (though really strong fragrance). As far as my nails go now, I cant keep them short enough!
And you guys talking about your nasty feet issues is as disturbing to me as it was to you when us women were talking about pregnancy breast issues... lol.

Aveda is the WORST! I used to work in an Aveda salon. My hands developed horrible excema and I was always congested. I even tried washing hair while wearing gloves. Unfortunately, it was still in the hair and there was no way I could cut hair while wearing gloves. I had to leave after only 6 months, which is really hard on a stylist because every time you change salons, you lose clients.

I should've known olive oil does all the tricks. My father was big with Olive Oil, it was his miricle worker. Did you watch that movie called, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding?".. if yes, remember Tulah's father and his obssesion with Windex? .. Ha, well my dad was the same, but with Oilve Oil.

Former stylist here, too!:) Which is why I KNOW the Swedish clogs are the best for standing all day, lol!
God Bless
Oh yes!!! I had a pair of Bra Sko's I bought in Little Sweden (Lindsborg, Kansas)--they were the absolute most comfortable shoes I have ever worn...like having a fluffy pillow strapped to each foot. I should probably get another pair....

I've been home since my oldest was born, but back when I worked in a shop, I wore nothing but Doc Martens. I rarely wear them today because they're so clunky and heavy. I doubt I would have be allowed to wear clogs at that shop, not hip enough:cool:

But clogs are soooooo cool . . .

Oh...I do hope you get to go...especially if you are Swedish. The downtown area has a number of quaint shops selling authentic Swedish stuff.
Here is the info on the clogs and the shop they have in Lindsborg. I ordered a pair of the Bra Sko tonight since I don't think I'll be back to Kansas anytime soon.

That site is deadly! I have a shoe addiction:D
I'm really digging the handpainted clogs, BUT they're wooden, so I assume they're not as comfy as the "comfort clogs"?
kamikat, who is looking forward to wearing her Birkenstock clogs this morning.

Do you know if the sizes run on number or if they go large or small? I'm between a 7-8 here and in Europe everything between a 36-40 depending on the brand. I have a pair of wood clogs from Sweden and I'm pretty sure it's a 38. But if you have an idea, let me know.
Thanks!

The wooden clogs give the overall best support for your whole body. You should give them a try. :)

They are very comfortable and support is great, but if you are prone to sciatica you might want to stay away from them and go with the comfort version.

Hmmmm, Birks are not the way to go. I wore my Birkenstock clogs today and was in more pain than my cheapie Target clogs last week. Not sure why, but last week my feet hurt, this week with the Birks, my feet were fine but my legs hurt.
I think I'll try a pair of the comfort clogs this week.

I find that they are sized similarly to Birkenstocks--if that helps at all. But I am only familiar with the Bra Sko shoes...have never ordered the Dala's. If you call them up you should be able to get a better assessment...the lady at the store is very helpful.
