Did anyone watch the Olympics last night?

Evgeni Plushenko of Russian won gold in figure skating...and guess what he did? ;)

He crossed himself...three times! and the camera didn't cut away.

It was a nice moment to witness.

I wish I had stayed up to see him, but I was tired so went to bed early.

Good for him!

If that is not a sign of the deep conversion of Russia that is going on!

Now America needs to change back to God.

Whoa! What is the name of that hymn? It is glorious.

Where can I get a copy of that recording.

Did I hear Gospedi?

Can you get a translation of that hymn?

Here is his official site.

http://www.evgeniplushenko.net/

It doesn't mention anything about an Orthodox wedding though. :(

Its the Russian Anthem, not a hymn. If you play it in WMP, the title scrolls at the bottom of the window. Its performed by the State Symphony and several choirs.

You are correct!

National Anthem of the Russian Federation!

Here are two translations:

Literal translations, non-singable

Translation by Anastasia (http://dime32.dizinc.com/~russmus/songs/anthemrf-eng.htm), made in 2004:

Russia — our sacred state,
Russia — our beloved country.
Mighty will-power, great glory
Shall remain your honors for all time!

REFRAIN:

Praise our free Fatherland,
Long-lasting union of brotherly peoples,
Ancestor-given wisdom of the people!
Long live, Country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar realm
Our forests and fields stretch.
You are one in the world! You are alone like that,
God-guarded native land!

REFRAIN

Plenty of room for dreams and for life
The coming years are promising us.
Allegiance to our Motherland gives us strength.
So it had been, so it is, and so it always will be!

REFRAIN

Translation by CNN, made in December 2000 (http://archives.cnn.com/2000/WORLD/europe/12/30/russia.anthem/):

Russia, our holy country!
Russia, our beloved country!
A mighty will, a great glory,
Are your inheritance for all time!
REFRAIN:

Be glorious, our free Fatherland!
Eternal union of fraternal peoples,
Common wisdom given by our forebears,
Be glorious, our country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar region
Spread our forests and fields.
You are unique in the world, inimitable,
Native land protected by God!

REFRAIN

Wide spaces for dreams and for living
Are opened for us by the coming years
Faithfulness to our country gives us strength
Thus it was, so it is and always will be!
REFRAIN

Does have a hymn-like hypnotic sound I would agree.

that's what I thought.

But what are the words?

Does anyone have a translation? I thought I was hearing Gospedi throughout the National Anthem?

An aside: Did Russia change their National Anthem after the fall of the Soviet Union?

I believe the tune is the same.....the words, very different.

During that interim period when they were the Commonwealth of Independent States the governement tried another anthem but it was not very popular.

That is what I wondered. The recorded song you posted sounded so religious.

Again, does anyone have a translation or transliteration?

See my post #9. I edited it to add 2 translations.

Here's the text in Russian. Don't see "gospodi" anywhere. I hilighted the word for God, "bogom":

I saw that too! It was the best! I was cheering like it was a football score!

I am really into the Olympics this year. I watch every night while being here on CF.

Thanks.

I have always liked to hear the Russian National Anthem. It is beautiful.
