Between all the different types of denominations?

I am totally clueless on this..

My religious background is quite scattered.

Grandpa is Catholic, Grandma is Protestant, Mom and Dad raised me Baptist/Non-denominational...

Basically same teaching...what's the diff?

Go to religious tolerance dot org. That's a decent start, or wiki a certain denom you are curious about.

Are you asking the difference between
Catholic
Baptist
and
non-denominational

Or the difference between Catholic and Protestant?

I suppose basically a brief explanation of the main denominations:
Catholic
Baptist/Anabaptist
Methodist
Presbyterian
Lutheran
etc

Here are some links:

http://www.ntbt.org/Our_Beliefs.htm (Baptist)

http://www.faithlutherangroton.org/faith4.html (Lutherans)

There are several different groups of non-denominational groups and their beliefs vary.

Hopefully this will get you started in your investigation.

I think the thing to always keep in mind is that no one denomination (or non-denominational congregation) holds a monopoly on Biblical truth. What is taught at a Catholic church will differ significantly from what is taught at a Baptist church (or even within different Baptist congregations), but that doesn't mean that one church is 100% right and the other is 100% wrong.

The thing to do is find a congregation whose beliefs and practices line up with your own. You may prefer a worship service that is serene, reverent and somewhat mysterious. Or you may prefer one with a more familiar and laid-back tone. You may believe in believer's baptism (as opposed to infant baptism), so you'll want to be careful which congregation you choose in that regard, too.

Find a congregation that has one creed- the Bible. Search for yourself and be sure the congregation you attend is actually following God's Word to the best of their ability :)

One thing you'll quickly learn is that there is a wide variation among denominations as well as between various denominations.

My own church is non-denominational, but it is very different than other non-denominational services. That's fine, we're all part of the Body of Christ.

There are numerous threads on this forum which should help explain some of the different beliefs as well as practices among denominations.

Still, individual churches can vary a lot. I'd spend time with the church rather than focusing on the particular denomination.

Wow! Thanks for your responses!

I have chosen a Non-Denominational stance for myself, simply because I dont want to get lost in any traditions of men or religious traditions of any sort.

The Bible is the basis for all my beliefs, nothing else.

Here is somthing that you may want to consider, in his first letter to the church at Corinth, Paul wrote "...Now I say ,that everyone of you saith, I am of Paul; and I am of Appolos;, and I of Cephas; and I of Christ."(1 Corinthians 1:12) Now let me add on to this. " I am of Luther, and I am of Calvin, and I am of Bennidict the 16th, and I am of Menos."

Paul goes on to say "Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? or were you baptised in the name of Paul? (1 Corinthians 1:13) The point is this, there is only one body of Christ. In his letter to the church at Ephesus, Paul says "...He is our peace, who hath made both one,and has broken down the middle wall of seperation between us." (Ephesians2:14) Paul was writing this to describe that both Jew and Gentile no longer were sepereated. How much more the Church has become sepereated. These denomiations came into being by one group of people believeing that they alone had the proper interpertation and true relevation of the Word of God. This is a clasic symptom of PRIDE. Think about this, Who would benifit and find joy in divisiveness withen the church, it sure aint Jesus.
My advice to you is this: Search out all the churches that appeal to you, and some of the ones that dont as well, get copies of their docternal statements, they all have them. compare them against the strictest, most litereal, interperation of the scripture. Pray and Fast, seek out revelation from the Holy Spirit, and let Him lead you. No matter what church you find yourself in, Bloom Where You Are Planted
