We had our annual meeting today, you folks know how that goes, but I just wanted to post this:
Time actually needed for meeting-
Maybe 12 minutes
Length of meeting-
one hour +
Time that would have been saved had people who really had nothing to say kept their mouths shut-
PRICELESS!

The all-time low at my church was a meeting, which was 3+ hours total, and over an hour was spent debating which summer camp to give $500 to.

My parish's meeting lasted just about 1.25 hours. Everything was important to discuss.
Plus it was pretty cool that I got mentioned :)

Our APCM takes about 2.5 hours. There is a lot to get through - presentations from all the ministry groups, finance statements, elections of wardens, PCC and sidespersons, etc.
We don't have a discussion as such - these happen in PCC, and if a member of the congregation wants something specific discussed they write to PCC.

OK, sure, some things need to bo covered, granted. But I was referring to people who just for the sake of saying something decided to bring up, ahem:
Tomorrow's saint / person of the day on the Church calendar
What wonderful things Cursillo / youth camp / hosting coffee hour, etc... did for me
etc...etc...
Also, things like the finance statement and budget don't ned to be gone over line by line with the comparison of last years expense on an item being a $ .27 increase over the previous year.
That kind of stuff....

That's the part I can't bear!
Also, when the Rector says at the end, 'I think we are doing everything right', when inside I want to SCREAM out: 'what about mission! what about evangelism! what about outreach' !!! We're not doing everything right!!!

We include a hotdish dinner with our parish meeting.
Since several members of my parish are really outstanding cooks (and one is a professional chef), it makes the meeting really easy to take!
Our meetings have gone quite a bit faster since we switched over to doing PowerPoint presentations of the budget, the accounting of the previous year, our goals, etc.

That would just slow us down. The start of the meting would be delayed another hour of , "Who brought this? Who made this? why I just have to get this recipe", etc...

Besides our parish directory, which is updated each year; we have a parish cookbook -- which is also updated each year!
Which also contains UberLutheran's famed cottage cheese salad: cottage cheese, minced green onion, cubed cucumber, a few dashes of Tabasco, and pepper.
Stupidly simple to make, but amazingly good to eat!

*winces* I'm going to be a voting member at our upcoming AGM in a few weeks. Synod needs to be got over with first. But it's my first time as a voting member of any church. I'm the only member of my family officially registered as a voting member of any church, since my parents attend one church but never registered and would have resigned as members recently had they been registered so...

We go to the pub before and afterwards. It gives some incentive to get the meeting finished before closing time.

That sounds nice, be nice if we could do that. Being paid by my parish... I have to go to the meetings...which usually start and finish on time...provided some of the traditionals of our church don't take too long.
We have powerpoint for our sermons, the older people have said it's too modern and not like the old days, we changed the office around and they say they don't like it.
We are a community church.. so it's really hard trying to please everyone.

Ours was about an hour fifteen. It was very productive through about 90% of it. I was impressed.
