Hooray for new alehouse! Drinks are on me (so long as they're non-alcoholic as I'm too young to buy alcohol!)

Hmm... just pondering, as we're on page no. 1, should we create a different one and let this one die, and have a clever name like Reilly's does?

Thats not exactly what Reilly's does.
They retain the bame Reilly's and it's number, and then they add an individualism for that pub.
So if you were to go down that road, it would be...
The Canterbury Alehouse (7) - and then whatever you wanted to call it.:)

Yes, I like the new name, helps me not to feel alone in lacking creativity! ;)
Thanks, Ann M, for showing me the list of members of OBOB, I guess it would be interesting to have that here, but still feels a little too competitive to me... :sorry:
I kind of think that we should keep the same name for the Alehouse.

I kind of think that we should keep the same name for the Alehouse.
Some of our names are creative, some are reflective of what's happeing (eg the engagement pubs) etc, but there always fun.
I understand where you're coming from about the competitiveness of the numbers and I will admit that there is alot of that in Reillys, especially as we post individual Pub No's as well, and we do like to beat Andy ;) . But I thikn that the fact that we acknowledge everyone, who has visited Reilly's is also a bonus, and it gives a small part of belonging to each person who posts there.

Well both actually Tom. Depends on where it comes from.
If it comes from Scotland, then it's Whisky
If it comes from Ireland, then it's Whiskey.
Personally I've always preferred the Irish, unless someone else is paying for it;)

The Once and Future King!
-- By T.H.White, another great book targeting the vulnerable hearts and minds of our children with mixed messages of morals and magic!
If anyone watched the second X-men movie, you may have noticed that one of the children in Professor Xavier's school was reading the adventures of young Wart. There's one of those mega-chain-bookstores attached to the mall that houses our theatres, right at the theatre exit. I dragged the daughters in as soon as the movie ended in the hope that their X-fervour could be leveraged against getting them to read that slightly twisted fantasy.

Meaty? Meaty? Either you're an American trying to pass as an Englishman, or you have some strange and British definition of meaty. Or are English sausages less reliant on oatmeal and filler than the Irish ones are? My boss, back when I was working for the Irish, used to dream up schemes to smuggle "real" Irish sausages into Alberta, since the pork-and-offal stuffed ones we consider normal just had too much meat in them to taste "right".
karen freeinchristman
21st January 2006, 03:20 PM
English sausages are so different from American ones. The American ones are generally heavier textured, is that because they contain more meat?
When I first moved here, I found it so strange to eat sausages in the evening for supper, instead of just for breakfast like we did in America.

They're not really meaty like sausages. To get an idea of taste then think of a rusk soaked in blood.

English sausages are so different from American ones. The American ones are generally heavier textured, is that because they contain more meat?

Americans only have sausages for breakfast?
One of my favourite meals is simply sausage with mash and veg, or of course toad in the hole.

Sausage is wonderful. Since I'm doing the low-carb thing this week, I could actually eat as much sausage as I want, if I could afford it and mind some all-meat sausages. Do they sell sausages at Target? I have a smallish gift card. In the meantime, I'm settling for lots of pork rinds. I'm hoping to lose 10 lbs in the week. Isn't Atkins wonderful? I'd do it all the time if not for my health problems and history. The doctors told me never to do it again -- err, but I'm sure a week won't hurt anything. ;)

Okay, I know what a gridiron is -- both the actual one that Saint Faith for example carries in her iconography, and the metaphorical one that refers to the grid-iron-shaped white lines painted on the American/Canadian "football" field.
And I know what a frame is in terms of the things holding family portraits on my staircase walls, and the metaphorical frame that is a technique in web-page design, and the slang term used in criminology. What is this "frame"?

Already in my training i've had so many interesting conversations with students. They are all just so interested in 'belief'. The question that i've been asked more than any other is "are you a Christian, sir?". I've never answered it in a way that satisfies them, but students are genuniely interested in what RE has to offer- it's just a matter of finding a way of engaging them in what the government wants them to learn.

I don't know about Cyprus, but 14 years ago it was warmer in Calgary than in Florida. I know, because I was vacationing in Florida at the time, and shivering.
But Canada's a BIG place. They're having nasty weather in Ontario and Vancouver hasn't been too pleasant either, if I recall the weather reports. Which makes it even more unusual that the prairies are basking in unseasonable warmth, since landlocked as we are we usually get rather immoderate weather.

So...today I'm supposed to be registering my daughter for school next year. She's graduating from her small, private school which only runs through 6th grade. About 2 months ago we found a great school for her (the public school near us is huge and an overwhelming mess), a small RC parochial school.
This is registration week, and I was told to come in on Monday morning with all the needed documents, etc. So I took a day off of work (needed to rearrange my entire week's work schedule) and was there at 8:15 am. The secretary proceeded to tell me she hadn't had time to finish making the proper form and that she'd take my name & number and call me when it was ready so I could come in and register my kid.
She said maybe she'd have it today, so I'm sitting by the phone for a possible call. Don't know what to do if it isn't today...can't take more time off from work on a maybe and registration is first come first serve (most of the other nearby parochial schools are already over capacity). I am highly annoyed.
Don't they have an old form from last year they could use? They seem to not give a care that they are really putting us out. This sort of lack of any definite answer about when I can get this accomplished is making my neurotic little head hurt.
I'd like a big cyber black & tan, please!

Rising sea levels will almost certainly divert the stream away from our shores in the near future.
However, as it is predicted that global warming will cause an average temperature rise of around 10 degC, losing the stream will just about cancel that out.
Won't protect us from rising sea levels in terms of massive fllooding though.
And those who dismiss it should remember that people laughed at Noah.....

Well, goodnight...I'm off to try to nudge a grubby 11 year old into the shower. I am at a loss as to how to explain my child's affinity for dirt and grime. If I didn't crack the whip she'd only bathe twice a year...very medieval Parisian.
Sounds just like me at that age, Bless her.

lol. I just watched an expert talking about it on TV this afternoon.
I read the report on the report (so to speak) on the Beebs website, and it's well worth a look.

Do you think this whole climate business is concerning then?

I think it is very concerning.
If you read the article I posted you will see what I mean.
It is going to devestate the lives of literally millions of people in the coming years.
Don't be lulled by the statement that it will take 1000 years for the seas to rise by 7 metres. It will.
But it will take only a few years for it to rise 1 metre, which will be enough to render large parts of the east of Britain underwater, including the areas that we both live in.
There was a report a week or so ago which said that many of our reservoirs are only 40% full. In January!!
We have been getting warned about this for years and far too many people have just said "Yea,whatever".
It has got to be taken seriously. Not in a few years when the flooding starts, but now

Hmmm,
I must admit i heard a speaker give a bit of cheesy line, but it has stuck with me over recent months.
He said something to the effect of "Jesus will return one day, and just imagine how he must feel to return to a dead world. Rather than a glorious Christian congregation rejoicing in his return, he will simply return to thousands of dead bodies whose death was the result of vain amibtion."
It certainly made me think, and perhaps i should be taking this situation a little more seriously than i am....

I think that the majority of us need to be taking it much more seriously.
far too many Christians have been raised on the idea that Jesus will be back next week so the environment doesn't matter.
Well it does.
It's God's creation and we are doing our best to detroy it
